The Department of Psychology is a diverse and creative workplace for education and research in Psychology. Project description
The position will be associated with a research project that examines whether the vocabularies used to describe smells have an underlying universal semantic structure, or whether there are fundamental-and possibly culturally conditioned-semantic differences between the smell vocabularies of different languages. In this project, smell vocabularies of diverse languages are mapped partly with the help of data-driven machine learning methods based on natural texts (i.e. text corpora), and partly based on more traditional lexical-typological, linguistic methods based on native speaker elicitations.

Main responsibilities
The main responsibilities consist of analyzing text corpora using NLP methods, word embedding modeling, machine learning and similar methods, quantitative analysis, writing of scientific articles, and possibly also experimental data collection.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process special attention to will be given to research skills. The applicant requires documented experience of the research methods that are relevant for the position. This includes high-level skills in Python programming, as well as documented experience in working with text corpora and various NLP methods, word space modeling with, for example, Word2Vec, BERT, GPT2 and/or other word space models. Documented experience of independent scientific work that has led to one or several publications in scientific journals or conference proceedings is also required.

It is also advantageous to have documented experience of working with machine learning and other statistical methods such as regression analysis, PCA, hierarchical clustering, or neural networks, experience of processing and pre-processing text data or other data types, of compiling different types of data from different sources, of different visualization methods of complicated data sets, of collecting experimental or survey data (for example via on-line forms).

The applicant should also have documented good collaboration skills, be able to work independently, be innovative and solution-oriented, and have basic knowledge of linguistics and psychology.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 1 November 2022 or as per agreement.
