Assistant Professor in Sustainability Transitions

You will do research on the changes in institutions, regulations, and markets and user practices needed to enable the transition to sustainable energy and mobility systems, with a specific focus on energy communities. The energy system is in transition from a centralized energy system with hierarchical control and governance, to a distributed energy system with a more polycentric governance system and a more active role of end users and local producers. Furthermore, we observe increased integration of energy and mobility systems. Digitization and smart grids are key to realizing this transition and ensuring system functionality. A challenge is that all these developments require not only changes in technology but also in institutions and user practices. Addressing these challenges requires a deep understanding of current energy and mobility systems from both an engineering and a socio-economic perspective.

This position is highly interdisciplinary, and you are expected to work with social scientists and humanities scholars, as well as natural scientists and engineers. The Technology, Innovation, and Society (TIS) group at Eindhoven University of Technology includes all these disciplines and offers provides a stimulating and collaborative environment. The TIS group is part of the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS). Research at TIS concerns how humans and societies bring about technological change, and how technological innovations change society. With ~20 staff and a large group of postdocs and PhD students, researchers in the TIS group try to bridge the engineering and social sciences in a systems perspective on sustainability transitions. The TIS staff teaches in the BSc program 'Sustainable Innovation', the MSc programs ‘Sustainable Energy Technologies’ and 'Innovation Sciences', and in university-wide programs for engineers.
