Associate Professor of physics

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as associate professor of physics with expertise in computer simulations of condensed matter. The position is time limited, covering the period April 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.

Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The department conducts basic and applied research within physics and mathematics, chemistry, medicinal biology, molecular biology and environmental sciences. Bachelor and master’s programs are offered within the same areas. The department is organized into four research groups: Mathematics & Physics group “IMFUFA”, Chemistry, Medicinal & Molecular Biology, and Environmental Dynamics. Whenever relevant we work interdisciplinary within each group, the department, and the main areas at Roskilde University, in open-minded collaboration with private companies, public institutions, universities, and NGOs.

The IMFUFA research group focuses on the structure and dynamics of soft matter and viscous liquids, on the history, philosophy and didactics of science, and on mathematical modelling and its scientific foundations. These fields together encompass a multidimensional understanding of physics and mathematics in which the disciplines are viewed not just as classic scientific fields, but also in light of their functions in other subjects and practice fields, and as disciplines with cultural and societal characteristics.

The position is financed by the VILLUM Foundation’s Matter project directed by Prof. Jeppe Dyre, which is an integrated part of the Glass and Time center. The purpose of Matter is to apply isomorph heory to various phenomena in liquids and solids, and the associate professor will work closely with Prof. Dyre within this overall framework. For more information about the center please refer to http://glass.ruc.dk.

Responsibilities and tasks

General: The associate professor’s job mainly involves research, with 20% teaching (with associated examination duties). The associate professor manages research, supervises Ph.D. students and postdocs, and takes part in academic assessments. Additionally, the position involves sharing knowledge with society in the form of popular dissemination, which is a priority of the Matter project.

Specifically: The optimal candidate has conducted research at the highest international level by applying and developing techniques for molecular dynamics simulations of glass-forming liquids or similar systems. Extensive experience with GPU computing is an advantage, as is some knowledge of isomorph theory.

Formal qualifications

  • A Ph.D. degree within physics.
  • Documented scientific qualifications in the above-mentioned subject areas.
  • Experience with supervision of problem-oriented projects should be documented as far as possible.

You are expected to possess good interpersonal skills in order to become an active participant in IMFUFA’s and the department’s daily activities, as well as engaging in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department whenever relevant.

Assessment

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to;

  • the candidate’s scientific production and research potential,
  • the candidate’s experience with teaching and education development, in particular project guidance,
  • the candidate’s all-round academic experience basis, preferably including international academic experience, as well as, e.g., experience with reviewing academic papers, organizing research conferences or seminars, etc.,
  • how the candidate may be expected to contribute to the general IMFUFA research and teaching environment,
  • the candidate’s potential for contributing to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation.
  • the candidate’s experience with popular dissemination,
