Lecturer (Docent) in Digital Humanities (0.5 FTE)

The Leiden University Centre for Digital Humanities is looking for a lecturer, who will be a member of a forward-looking and rapidly expanding centre as well as one of the institutes at the Faculty of the Humanities. You will teach Digital Humanities courses as well as support the advancement of digital research skills and tools at the Faculty of Humanities through workshops and other educational activities. In particular, we are looking for candidates that combine expertise and skills in Digital Humanities and disciplines such as History, Heritage, Culture studies, and Design or Visualization.
Key responsibilities
- Developing, teaching and coordinating Digital Humanities, Visualization, and Digital History/Heritage courses at different levels. This involves courses in the Digital Humanities minor and faculty wide elective courses in Digital Humanities. Language of instruction is English.
- Designing and teaching workshops, modules, and other forms of training in digital skills and tools to support and augment digital expertise of staff and students at the Faculty of Humanities.
- Foster and grow a diverse and inclusive DH (student) community at the Faculty of the Humanities, with an eye for differences in backgrounds, interests, and technical expertise.
- Playing an active role in recruiting students by contributing to open days, orientation and information sessions.
- Participating in the development and implementation of educational innovations, also in digital form.
- Participating in the activities of our Digital Lab and contributing to administrative and organisational duties within LUCDH.
- Participating in the academic community of the Institute of which you will be a part.
- Further develop your and the LUCDH’s teaching profile and network.
Your profile
- You have either
- a Master or PhD degree in the Humanities, with demonstrable experience or specialisation in Digital Humanities;
- a Master or PhD degree in a digital/computational field with a demonstrable interest in and experience with Humanities subjects.
- You have a strong teaching record, preferably on BA and (research) MA level, as demonstrated by teaching evaluations or similar evidence of teaching quality. A BKO/UTQ registration (or willingness to obtain the nationally standardised University Teaching Qualification within two years) is preferred;
- You are a committed and inspiring teacher, with an inclusive approach to education and the ability to engage a diverse community of undergraduate and graduate students;
- You are aware of current issues, viewpoints and innovative methods within the field. An active interest in research, while outside the scope of this position, is advantageous.

- You are a clear communicator and team player, enthusiastic to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries;
- You have (near) native proficiency in English. Proficiency in Dutch (or a willingness to master a C1 level of fluency in Dutch within two years) is preferred.

The PhD candidate will be formally employed at the Faculty of Humanities and appointed at one of the faculty’s institutes. The Faculty's institutes are rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. Terms and conditions
The candidate will be housed at the Leiden University Centre for Digital Humanities (LUCDH). LUCDH spearheads innovative research in Digital Humanities and offers advice and support to researchers in the Faculty of Humanities working on digital data and computational methods (see https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/humanities/centre-for-digital-humanities/)
We offer a fixed-term post for 5 years starting 1 January 2023 for 19 hours per week (0.5 FTE). This is a 100% teaching appointment, with teaching duties consisting of regular courses in our DH Minor as well as workshops and other educational activities at the LUCDH. Salary range from €2960.- to €4670.- gross per month (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) for a full working week.

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/ she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
Leiden University has a guideline on Language Policy. If the successfull applicant does not speak Dutch, she or he will be required to acquire proficiency in Dutch to level B1 within two years of taking up the appointment.
