Research Software Engineer

 

Do you like solving complex problems using digital methods? Would you like to work at the interface of science and technology? The Research Engineering team at Utrecht University is looking for a research software engineer. Our team supports researchers in applying digital technologies, in various stages of their research. We help researchers with technological challenges on, for example data handling and computing. But we also consult on methodological issues, like the selection of the most suitable research approach or the validation of results. In our engineering projects, we closely work together with researchers from a wide variety of domains and for a specific period. Our unique approach combines experience in both academic research and software engineering.

As a research software engineer you will/are:

  • provide consultancy and develop research software;
  • work in projects together with researchers and engineering colleagues;
  • work in projects that vary in size from a few months to over a year;
  • typically work on 2 or 3 projects simultaneously;
  • apply Open Science and FAIR principles;
  • part of a diverse group of engineers with a variety of skills and expertise;
  • expected to closely manage your engineering projects.

Qualifications

Required expertise are:

  • MSc, PhD or professional bachelor degree;
  • experience with software engineering;
  • proficiency in Python, R and/or C;
  • experience with Linux, shell scripting and version control (Git);
  • experience with one or more of the following domains:
  • cloud computing and/or high performance computing;
  • databases;
  • machine learning;
  • data/text mining;
  • research infrastructure.

Required competences are:

  • talent for technical problem solving;
  • excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • proven organizational and time management skills;
  • flexible approach and manner;
  • good communication skills in English, both verbally and written.

Offer

This is an appointment of 0.8 - 1.0 FTE for the duration of one year. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is one of the possibilities. The minimum gross salary is €2,960 and the maximum gross salary is €4,670 (scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
