Research Assistant for the CIFER research project, 8 months

Faculty

At the Faculty of Culture and Society, we carry out research and teaching in many of the leading issues of today – for example, regarding global politics, new media and sustainable urban development – within the fields of humanities, social sciences and design. Department

The Department of Global Political Studies is a multidisciplinary research and educational environment with Bachelor programs in European Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER), Diversity Studies, International Relations, Human Rights, and Political Science. Read more here.

Close to GPS is the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM). MIM was established in 2007 and is an international research centre with a multidisciplinary profile and a strong international presence in the research field of migration. Within the center and its extensive network, researchers develop, explore and exchange knowledge of international migration and ethnic diversity. Work duties

City for Everybody – Building Responsible Action for Inclusive Local Communities (CIFER) is an EU funded two-year project which aims to address the institutional and personal levels of racial discrimination and contribute to the implementation of the EU Anti-racism Action Plan.

The tasks to be undertaken by the research assistant will include:

  • Maintaining regular contacts with the principal project coordinator and the consortium members
  • Literature review and analysis of existing anti-discrimination measures, policies and practice in Malmö
  • Conducting focus groups and interviews in Malmö in different languages such as Arabic, English and Swedish
  • Responsible for the project report including state of the art and good practices from Malmö

This will all be undertaken in coordination and under the supervision of the project members.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this specific position, the applicant must have:

  • Master’s degree with focus on migration studies, refugee studies or Middle Eastern studies
  • At least two years of experience in working as part of a consortium for EU funded project
  • Experience of interviewing and conducting focus group with refugees and other BIPOC communities
  • Experience of writing a report for EU funded projects
  • Proficiency in Swedish, English and Arabic, written and spoken.
  • Ability to conduct and lead independent work

The following are meritorious for the position:

  • Experience of translation and transcription for academic research
  • Non-academic work experience related to working with vulnerable populations and experience of handing sensitive data (candidates who have experience working with refugee would be preferred)
  • Experience working on issues related to integration or belonging with migrants
  • Established long-term relationship and experiences of collaboration with civil society organizations
