The Energy Conversion and Systems group at the School of Engineering is looking for an excellent

PhD candidate to work on the integration of heat storage in industrial and communal energy systems.

Project description

The thesis is part of a funded project by the Academy of Finland called OptStorage, which focuses on industrial and communal energy systems optimization, novel energy storage materials, and artificial intelligence. We study what environmental, economic, and energy efficiency effects new thermal energy storages can have, and what kind of properties new materials need to have to reach the paradigm shift towards carbon-neutral energy use.

The focus of this PhD thesis is to study the possibilities to integrate heat storage in industrial energy systems and to study how industrial waste heat sources can be utilized in communal and single-family house energy systems. The thesis is part of a funded project by the Academy of Finland called OptStorage, which focuses on industrial and communal energy systems optimization, novel energy storage materials, and artificial intelligence. Process modeling, simulation, optimization, and machine learning are the main research tools used.

PhD students use 5- 10% of their working time to teach (instructing bachelor theses, course assisting).
