Postdoc in Fundamental Plasma Physics

 The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the APEX ("A Positron-Electron eXperiment") Group, based in the Tokamak Scenario Development Division, a position for a Postdoc in Fundamental Plasma Physics (m/f/d).

Your tasks

  • The research will be at the intersection of experimental and numerical plasma physics, with a focus on diagnosing, optimizing, and capturing pulses of positrons from buffer-gas trap (BGT) systems.
  • Tasks include upgrading and commissioning a retarding field analyzer, to be used in characterizing BGT pulses; positron injection and confinement experiments in dipole magnetic traps; and the further development and exploitation of numerical tools to guide and interpret experiments.
  • You will also be involved in supervision, mentoring, and training of other scientists (e.g., students, interns, visitors, colleagues, etc.) to operate and exploit your experiment and simulation systems, as well as the dissemination of results.

Your profile/Our requirements

  • doctoral degree in plasma physics or a related field
  • experience with both experimental and numerical approaches to diagnosing collections of magnetized, charged particles
  • enthusiasm for fundamental plasma science experimentation
  • very good written and spoken English (the working language of the APEX Collaboration)

Your abilities

  • research expertise in technical areas relevant to the pair plasma mission (e.g., simulation of charged particles in a range of magnetic geometries; control and data acquisition for various experiment systems; detection and interpretation of annihilation gamma signals)
  • prior authorization to work in radiation-controlled areas and comfort with working in such environments
  • fluent German language skills, or the willingness to develop them

The position is limited to a duration of two years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD Bund).
