Postdoc (m/f/d) | Membrane contact sites combining cryo-electron microscopy and molecular modelling

The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics (MPIBP) is a leading international research institute that uses biophysical, biochemical and computational methods to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of cellular systems at the molecular scale. It consists of several research groups and scientific core facilities, with about 200 employees from more than 25 countries.

The Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) is an independent research institute performing cutting-edge theoretical research in the areas of life science, physics, geosciences, neuroscience, computer science, and artificial intelligence.

Both institutes are located at the Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt am Main.

We offer an interdisciplinary Postdoc position (m/f/d) for provisionally one year to investigate membrane contact sites combining cryo-electron microscopy and molecular modelling at Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt am Main.

Your task

The lab “Mechanisms of Cellular Quality Control” led by Florian Wilfling at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics and the lab “Development of Pharmacological Probes” headed by Sebastian Thallmair at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d)  to work on an interdisciplinary project funded by the SCALE Cluster of Excellence initiative. The aim of the project is to investigate the mechanisms of membrane contact site formation between the ER and plasma membrane using correlative cryo-electron microscopy and molecular modelling techniques. The candidate will join a dynamic, enthusiastic and international team of biophysicists and biochemists ready to tackle exciting problems related to membrane contact sites in a collaborative fashion.

Your profile

We are seeking individuals with

  • a PhD degree and an outstanding experimental track record in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, cell biology, molecular modelling, or a related field of science,
  • hands-on experience in cryo-EM, cryo-ET, and/or fluorescence microscopy,
  • hands-on experience in integrative modelling and/or molecular dynamics,
  • a creative and hardworking mindset and a strong interest in basic and interdisciplinary research,
  • proficiency in English (both speaking and writing).

We offer

The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is an internationally leading research institution in the fields of structural biology, biophysics and cell biology located at the center of the Frankfurt science campus. The Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies is a highly interdisciplinary theoretical research institute with an inspiring research environment. We are offering excellent working conditions, state-of-the-art infrastructure and an international research environment.

The salary is in accordance to the Public Sector Collective Agreement Hessen (TV-H, E13).
