Postdoctoral Researcher in toxicology – focus on particles and microplastics

We are looking for a motivated postdoc to be part of our collaborative research group with a focus on particle toxicology at the Unit of Biochemical Toxicology, Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM). The research at the unit aims at understanding the connection between exposure to chemicals and complex negative health effects, such as cancer and effects caused by endocrine disruption. You will participate in various exciting projects with a focus on understanding more about the toxic effects of air pollution particles and microplastics.

Your mission

The research group focuses, among other things, on nanoparticles from the transport sector and the postdoctoral fellow will be active in the EU project nPETs ( and perform some modeling of particle deposition in the lung (the MPPD model) as well as collaborate with researchers from other universities. The research group also focuses on particles from "3D printing" and microplastics, and the postdoctoral fellow will also participate in these projects. The main tasks of the postdoc will be to culture different types of cells, expose them to various particles and perform toxicity testing using a range of in vitro methods including viability assays, comet assay, micronucleus assay and multiplexing of cytokines as well as RNA-sequencing. More advanced exposure techniques may become relevant, such as long-term studies (several weeks) and exposure in "air liquid interface" as well using co-cultures of different cells. Other tasks include performing statistics, writing manuscripts, and participating in meetings and discussions with partners as well as teaching in the master’s program in toxicology. The position is temporary for 12 months.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with a documented background in toxicology with practical experience in cell culture and toxicity assessment. Previous work with particles or microplastics is meritorious. The candidate must be able to work well in a team with researchers from different disciplines, have good collaboration and communication skills and must be able to communicate well in English, both orally and in writing.
