TT Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education or Mathematics and Technology Education

 We are looking for an early-career academic who is interested to start a tenure track and who can strengthen our teaching and research in the field of mathematics education and/or mathematics and technology education in the context of higher education teaching and learning.

Mathematics education is primarily concerned with the theories, tools, methods, and approaches that facilitate the practice of mathematics and mathematical learning and teaching. As such, the field engages with questions related to mathematical literacy, mathematical thinking, problem-solving, critical thinking, instructional practices, embodied cognition, multimodality, inclusivity, as well as connections with other disciplinary areas, relation with technology and the affective domain.

As Assistant Professor you will:

• set up and develop your own research line and research group
• supervise PhD students
• acquire external funding
• promote the societal relevance of your research
• teach in and contribute to the development of the degree programs of bachelor’s in Mathematics and the master’s program in Science Education and Communication
• contribute to the organization of the faculty, for example by participating in working groups and committees, in the domains of teaching, research and management.

At the stage of Assistant Professor 30% of your time is for teaching and education development, 60% for research and 10% for organizational tasks.

The position we offer will be embedded in the Institute for Science Education and Communication (ISEC) that aims to improve Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education at the university level through research. This is done through explorative and intervention-based studies that include the development, implementation, and impact evaluation of curriculum materials, course design, pedagogical tools and instructional strategies as well as the use of digital tools in teaching and learning.

ISEC works closely with other institutes (e.g. Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence), Science LinX, research schools (e.g. Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health) institutes and units (e.g. Professionalisation and Innovation of Education, Science and Society, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) at the University of Groningen and it is affiliated with international organizations and associations (e.g., European Society for Research in Mathematics Education, Young European Researchers in Mathematics Education, International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, European Science Education Research Association, National Association of Research in Science Teaching).

ISEC members are involved in teaching mainly in the two-year MSc-programme Science Education and Communication caters to students with a BSc in science, mathematics or engineering, and trains them to become either a science teacher in high school or a professional in the broad field of science communication. Depending on expertise, team members teach in Bachelor’s program as well, as for example, the three-year programme in Mathematics which is an international Bachelor’s degree programme which offers two specializations: General Mathematics & Probability and Statistics, which have a common first-year.

Qualifications

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities a full-time position as Assistant Professor in mathematics education in our faculty’s tenure track system Career Paths in Science. We encourage you to apply if you have:

• a PhD degree in Mathematics Education or related field (e.g. STEM education) with a focus on higher education mathematics and/or mathematics and technology
• a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
• demonstrably excellent skills in research methodologies relevant for studying mathematics learning and teaching in higher education: quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, practice-based research, participatory action research, or ethnography
• a good track record in research, as shown by publications in international peer-reviewed journals and external research funding
• a good track record in teaching, appropriate to your career stage
• at least three years of relevant work experience at the university level after your PhD
• a relevant international network and preferably international experience
• demonstrable organizational competences
• excellent command of spoken and written English.

And you are:

• if not yet in possession, willing to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) within five years
• able to work well in an international, culturally diverse environment
• a team player with good communication skills who is able to inspire students and colleagues
• competent in using Dutch language or motivated to learn it within five years (B 1 level).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 60 months.
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a tenure track position as Assistant Professor (0.8-1.0 FTE)
• a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,974 (salary scale 11) up to a maximum of € 6,181 gross per month (salary scale 12), depending on your career stage for a full-time position

As Assistant Professor you will enter a tenure track that, if followed successfully, will lead to a Full Professorship in approximately 10 years. In case of a full-time contract, you will initially be appointed for 7 years and your performance will be assessed after 5 years. This moment may be extended with at most one year in case of a life event (e.g. prolonged illness or maternity leave). If your assessment is positive, you will get a tenured appointment as an Associate Professor. After another 4 to 7 years you will be assessed for promotion to the position of Full Professor.
