The Department of Law conducts exciting interdisciplinary research and education in the subject of law. The Department has expanded greatly over the last years, and it is steadily growing with new researchers and lecturers joining the staff. The Department of Law invites applications for a Post Doc position in EU law. The position is linked to the EU Horizon funded project named “States’ Practice of Human Rights Justification: a study in civil society engagement and human rights

Duties 

The researchers will work in close collaboration with the grant coordinator Visiting Professor Maria Grahn-Farley and Professor Ester Herlin-Karnell, in collaboration with other members of the project. The particular focus of the research will be on EU as a global human rights actor in relation to Third Countries, with a focus on the possible regulatory gaps and overlap occurring when States use Human Rights Justifications (HRJ) for to legitimize and defend their decisions and positions. The project will identify gaps in the individual human rights regulations and protection, serving as underpinning data for our recommendations to EU in support of a multinational human rights system and promotion of transnational democratic governance. The project will seek to develop a theory of HRJ and a process for Systematic Ongoing Civil Society Engagement revitalizing a more dynamic bottom up democratic process.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct and publish their own research, provide a review of related research and public activity and investigate possible partnerships with academic and civil society groups. They will help manage workshops, conferences and working groups, help produce group working papers and assist in the academic and public development of the programme. They will present papers at conferences or public meetings and represent the research group at external meetings/seminars. They will also carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions and research groups and undertake a small amount of teaching duties.

Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. 

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. 

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.  

The successful candidate will hold, a PhD in a topic in human rights law, EU law, legal theory, political theory, or another relevant field. They will have the ability to organise conferences, workshops, working groups, partnerships and associated activity, work collaboratively across disciplines, manage their own research and associated activities. Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations and excellent communication skills are also essential.

Assessment criteria 

In the recruitment, competence and skills, together with documented merits, will be assessed based on conditions for conducting current research and teaching.

The applicant's ability to cooperate internally and externally to perform the described duties will be given great weight in assessing suitability for the position. In addition, skills in collaborating with the surrounding community and informing about research and development work will be given weight.
 

Employment 

Period of employment: Temporary position 24 months

Extent: 100%

Location: Department of Law.
