The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) establishes the research platform for catalysis “CatLab“ jointly with the Max Planck Society and in close cooperation with Technical University Berlin (TUB).

This long-term project forms the core of a new research focus at the HZB and aims to develop novel catalytic systems based on thin-film and nanotechnology for the generation, transport, and storage of green hydrogen.

CatLab will build a bridge between basic research and industry, and it is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

We are looking for an experienced scientist (f/m/d) as head of a joint research group in the field of inorganic materials chemistry for thin film catalysis. This group is jointly established with the Technical University Berlin and embedded in the CatLab project.

Yor tasks

  • You will be responsible for establishing and leading a joint research lab of HZB and TUB in the field of materials chemistry for thin film catalysts towards green hydrogen formation.
  • You will have a pivotal role within the project CatLab and shape and expand R&D activities at the interface between catalysis and thin-film technology.
  • You and your group will investigate an innovative design of catalysts through functionalization of thin films, study their structural, chemical and physical properties, apply them on promising catalytic reactions and identify the impact on the physical and chemical properties and their transformation during catalysis.
  • You will provide high class teaching on green chemistry at the Department of Chemistry of TUB.

You ideally have:

  • successfully completed your doctoral degree in inorganic materials chemistry.
  • extensive leadership experience (8+ years) as head of a research group incl. supervision of PhD students.
  • gained extensive experience in heterogeneous catalysis, solid-state chemistry, andchemical energy conversion.

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

A position as computer scientist for the work package AP6 entitled „Intelligent Pattern Recognition / MultiOmics“ of the recently launched CLINIC 5.1 initiative of the Departement of Urology at the University Hospital Heidelberg, in collaboration with DKFZ and multiple partners including industry, is available at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). CLINIC5.1 is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy for two years. The AP6 focuses on development and validation of a radiological annotation platform for diagnostic prostate MRI and digital pathology and of novel machine learning and artificial intelligence analysis pipelines and tools for fully-automated analysis of prostate MRI, prostate digital pathology and radiogenomic assessment. The CLINIC5.1 main office, which is coordinated by Prof. Markus Hohenfellner, is located at the Department of Urology at the University Hospital Heidelberg, and is in close coordination with Prof. David Bonekamp, the PI for the AP6 initiative at DKFZ.

In order to develop the AP6 software platform and demonstrator, and artificial intelligence tools under consideration of medical device law and utilizing classical machine learning and deep learning into a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the fully-automated and integrated assessment of prostate MRI and digital pathology data, we are looking for a computer scientist.

 

Job description:

We are looking for a team member with substantial experience and/or interest in developing, deploying, and maintaining the medical imaging annotation and analysis platform of the AP6 infrastructure and its integration with the CLINIC5.1 virtual twin systems, in part with utilization of medical device law software development practices. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research, development, and data management team to develop and apply a diverse range of state-of-the-art technologies. Tasks include:

  • Development of infrastructure concepts and monitoring strategies for data annotation and analysis
  • Developing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining prototype demonstrator functionality (such as annotation platform, visualization modules, lesion and organ segmentation modules and MultiOmics tools), also with regard to medical device law software development
  • Creating easily deployable virtual infrastructures that can be shared with other host institutions
  • Implementing system security measures and performing penetration testing
  • Supporting software developers and users to deploy software and analyze data

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in computer science or similar technical background
  • Experience in systems administration and scientific computing
  • Previous experience in machine and deep learning
  • Proficiency in UNIX-based systems and relevant programming languages such as Python 
  • Interest in setting up and using software interfaces and structured data formats (e.g. to the Joint Imaging Platform of the DKTK)
  • Interest in and ideally previous experience with medical device law software development
  • Previous experience of infrastructure in a life science or medical informatics context is beneficial

A fixed term position open for a Project Engineer or for a Bioanalyst at the Finnish Functional Genomics Centre

Finnish Functional Genomics Centre (FFGC) is a core facility, which belongs to a national Biocenter Finland infrastructure network. We support high level research by providing open access to the state-of-the art technologies and services for genome research. Currently the most important services include next-generation sequencing based analysis of genomes, transcriptomes and epigenomes. Our services users include academic and government’s research units, health care units and companies. FFGC operates at the Turku Bioscience Centre, which is a joint department of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. We operate in close collaboration with several international and national stake-holders.

We are now recruiting a project engineer, a bioanalyst or equivalent to support  research services provided at the unit. The key tasks include preparation and quality control of biological samples with different origins for high-throughput analyses, operation and maintenance of instruments as well as process management in compliance with the quality system of the unit. The tasks are performed close co-operation and interaction with the other core facility personnel, service users and other key stake-holders. Therefore, excellent collaborative skills, service attitude and communication skills in Finnish and English are a must.

The task requires excellent laboratory skills and capability for technical laboratory work that requires high precision and patience and is bound to time schedules. The core facility provides expertise and services with the continuously developing and emerging state-of-the-art technologies and methods. Therefore, the task requires a mindset that is flexible, open to new and motivated to learn and rapidly adapt to changes and continuously developing research environment. The task also requires knowledge in the quality system for which training will be organised. Previous experience in quality standard is considered as a bonus.

The applicant needs to have a suitable degree in the relevant field. The position is offered for one year, with a six-month trial period. There might be a possibility to an extention later. The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities. The position belong to our other personnel category and depending on the level of education, experience and further skills  the salary will be 2200 – 2500 eur/month in average.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university or college in Business, Information Systems, Information Technology (IT) or Computer Science
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a technology leader designing and developing data modelling with a minimum of 3 of those years specializing in big data architecture or data analytics (should include technologies such as Hadoop, NoSQL and Map-Reduce and other Industry BigData Frameworks) and other database modelling and management tools.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong, in-depth experience in data modelling and experience with business intelligence systems (dimensional modelling, data mining, predictive analytics).
  • Familiarity with Hadoop open-source stack including YARN, Kafka, Hive, Pig as well as relational databases.
  • Broad based architecture acumen: Database architecture, ETLSOA, Cloud, etc.

Software engineer for biomechanics and bio-robotics

 


Are you seeking for challenging projects at the edge of what is technically possible? Are you interested in joining an open-source software initiative aimed at improving human movement and health? Do you want to help oversee management and working process of an R&D Lab.

The Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology, at the University of Twente is seeking for a creative and motivated software engineer as part of the ERC Project INTERACT. We develop advanced software to simulate how humans move (e.g., how our brain controls our muscles to create different movements) and to control wearable robots (e.g., bionic limbs and exoskeletons). We use specialized and advanced experimental setups, some of which we develop and integrate ourselves. We are a rapidly growing Department.

You will help develop a software framework to study human movement (and injury) assisted by advanced wearable robots, such as bionic prostheses and exoskeletons. You will also help manage the working process and organization of the Neuromechanics Lab. Our Department currently employs more than 70 people, including scientists, teachers and technicians, of different nationalities. You will be part of a team of R&D Engineering Technicians who complement each other. Many of our R&D projects are in collaboration with other research institutions and companies from the Netherlands and abroad

Your responsibilities:
Contribute to maintain and extend our software framework for human movement modelling.
Write software for communication protocols and control of wearable robots.
Help maintain software repositories and documentation.
Identify requirements and wishes of computational and experimental set-ups to be developed.
Help manage working process and organization of research labs.

In some projects you will work independently, while in others you will collaborate with researchers as well as mechanical, electrical and control technicians. Due to the high integration with different fields (biomedical, mechanical, electronics), there is always an exchange of knowledge with your colleagues and growth opportunities.

Associate Head, School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (Malaysia)

 

The University seeks to appoint a dynamic, enterprising and inspirational leader to lead the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The successful candidate will be an established academic with proven track record of teaching, research and leadership in any aspect of statistics and data science, or a related discipline, with some preference for our current specialisation in actuarial mathematics or for computational aspects of statistical data science.  The appointee will be expected to lead both teaching and research operations in their area of specialisation and more broadly across the University, and to contribute to the development and teaching on our programmes. The candidate will also be expected to develop strong links with industry as well as to provide strategic leadership in the areas of mathematical and computer sciences. The successful candidate should be an established academic with proven track record of teaching, research and leadership in  business or a business-related discipline.  The successful candidate will be expected to lead both teaching and research operations in their area of specialisation and more broadly across the University. The Associate Head, School of Social Sciences (Malaysia) will also be expected to develop strong links with the industry as well as to provide strategic leadership in the area of Business and Enterprise.

 

The post holder will be expected to have experience in leading an academic unit (College, Faculty or School), improving performance and in managing both people and finances. 

The role will be based at the University's campus in Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia, and as such, the successful applicant will need to have the necessary visa clearances to live and work in Malaysia. Programmes will be delivered in English and so fluency in English is essential.

Key stakeholders: Professor Robert MacIntosh, Head of School, School of Social Sciences, Professor Heather McGregor, Executive Dean, Edinburgh Business School and, Professor Deborah Hall, Head, Psychology (Malaysia).

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to the leadership team of HWUM and the School of Social Sciences globally.
  2. Create teaching, research and industrial synergies within the range of Accountancy, Business, Finance, Management and Psychology programmes offered.
  3. Take an active role in student recruitment and be responsible for the overall growth of the Schools in enrolment, reputation and impact.
  4. Assume overall leadership and accountability in making sure that programmes delivered to the right quality and standard and ensure that quality assurance processes, such as student feedback, academic reviews and the professional accreditation, are carried out effectively and timely.
  5. Lead manage and coach for high performance of a team of academic staff and be responsible for academic planning and workload distribution.
  6. Working with the Deputy Provost and Heads of Schools in the selection and appointment of new academics, research, professional services and support staff
  7. Ensure students well-being and support student activities including managing issues of discipline, appeals and complaints.
  8. Assume overall reasonability in ensuring that efficient and effective operations at School level.
  9. Support the development of the campus including through participation in the planning process, the Executive Management Committee and the Academic Council.
  10. Undertake teaching and assessment duties on academic programmes.  Support colleagues in other Schools at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in the delivery of courses and other activities to support the delivery of HWUM's aims.
  11. Set a leading example in building and conducting world class research and research capabilities in the University's research areas globally.
  12. Develop and maintain strong links with business and industry, external organisations and the education sector.
  13. Assist the University leadership in delivering the strategic goals set and achieve the overall mission and vision of the University globally.

Essential:

  • PhD in a business related discipline

  • Fellowship of a relevant Professional Institution / Society

  • Teaching qualification or in the process of obtaining one
