Subject description

The subject includes construction technology, materials technology and production technology for concrete buildings, with special focus on large civil engineering structures for the infrastructure. This includes methods for considering the effects from static and dynamic loads, long-term behaviour and aging, structural response and safety, repair, upgrade, sustainability and resource-efficient and environmentally friendly buildings for hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, tunnels, bridges, roads and railways.

Duties

The associate professor is expected to conduct research with a focus on design and construction of advanced larger concrete structures, be the main supervisor and assistant supervisor for doctoral students and work overall in the research group areas for design and analysis, materials technology and numerical analysis. The associate professor must also be responsible for applying own research funds and be a project manager with executive responsibility for own research projects. Teaching will be at undergraduate level, advanced level and postgraduate level as, also as course responsible teacher and coordinator and supervisor for degree projects. In addition, the associate professor is expected to develop collaborations with societal actors and academic environments within and outside KTH, as well as participate in other activities related to research, teaching and environmental collaboration. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English.

The associate professor is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within three years. If necessary, a language plan is drawn up to support the employment.

Environmental humanities is the collective name for an emerging field of research where humanistic and social science methods and theories are applied to ask and answer questions about the environment, nature and climate and their use and representation in society and culture. The multidisciplinary field includes historical perspectives on the changing relationships between humans and their natural environments.

Duties

The duties include research, and the associate professor is expected to actively apply for research funding. Duties include teaching in courses that the division provides at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level at KTH and in collaboration with other universities, nationally and internationally. Course development and pedagogical work are an important part of the teaching responsibility. Duties include supervising doctoral students if available in the subject area and in other ways participating in the doctoral program. Moreover, duties include collaborating with the surrounding society.

Subject description

The subject consists of the mathematical and computational foundations of data analysis, with emphasis on the underlying theory to distill knowledge from large complex datasets. This includes but is not limited to models and algorithms for knowledge discovery, novel computational methods for big data management, optimization for machine learning, analysis of information networks and social networks, methods for explainable machine learning and AI, fairness, and transparency in learning systems.

Duties

The work primarily consists of research and supervision of doctoral students within the subject field. The assistant professor will be expected to establish and lead a research group in the subject field. In addition, it is expected that the assistant professor will apply for research funding, as well as establish industrial and academic collaborations both nationally and internationally. The position also includes developing and teaching first-, second- and third-cycle courses within the subject field.

The subject includes basic metallurgical studies with a focus on process phenomena that enable a transformation into a more sustainable, environmentally friendly and resource-efficient metal production and its by-products. The subject includes studies of how to create a circularity and a circular economy to support the ongoing and necessary transformation of the metal industry. Focus is on strengthening this transformation within, e.g. the steel, aluminium and copper industries, including industries that produce other metals such as rare earths and other important raw materials. Examples of research areas with a strong connection to sustainable metal production are i) new metallurgical processes, ii) substitution of critical raw materials, iii) reduced impact of harmful materials on society, and iv) optimization of energy needs for high-temperature processes.

Duties

The employment includes research, teaching, and supervision. The subject includes material chemistry with emphasis on experimental work with electrocatalytic materials for a sustainable production of hydrogen via heterogeneous catalysis.  In the first place, this includes making new catalytic materials that consist of abundantly available elements by different synthetic methods. It can also include characterization of such materials with experimental and theoretical methods and the evaluation of the activity of those materials for producing different chemicals such as hydrogen.

Assistant Professor in Quantitative Biology and Data Integration

 The Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity is looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic scientist to strengthen its research and teaching activities in the fields of quantitative biology, bioinformatics, and epigenomic data integration.

You will have the opportunity to establish your own independent research group and contribute to training the next generation of scientists at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level. The position will be embedded in three divisions: Developmental Biology, Theoretical Biology & Bioinformatics, and Genome Biology & Epigenetics. We would particularly like to hear from candidates with a special interest in integrating large-scale datasets to reveal the hidden patterns and biological mechanisms underlying gene regulation, epigenetics, and/or developmental processes. Ideally, you will be helping to answer fundamental biological questions by utilizing novel bioinformatic and AI approaches to analyze single cell, multi-omics, Hi-C and other novel data sets.

You will be encouraged to acquire external funding for new research projects through national and international grant opportunities, and to supervise the research of Bachelor’s and Master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows.

You will start as an Assistant Professor with a tenure track, with a career development plan that outlines the goals in research, teaching, and personal development. If your evaluation is positive, you will be offered a permanent position.

Qualifications

We are looking for a collaborative team player who is critically and creatively minded, organised and efficient. In addition, you have the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • You have a PhD in biology, data science, or a related field.
  • You have a proven track record in the successful application of quantitative methods (genomics, proteomics, microscopy) and data analysis.
  • You are able to demonstrate a clear vision of future research directions in your own field and have experience in publishing impactful science.
  • You are fluent in English, both in speech and writing.
  • You have affinity with teaching and supervision. Experience with innovation in education is appreciated.

Offer

  • a full-time tenure track position for five years, subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation. If evaluations are positive after five years, the position becomes permanent;
  • a PhD student, funded by the Biology Department;
  • a full-time gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranging between €3,974 and €5,439 per month (scale 11 at the level of Assistant Professor (universitair docent; UD) according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO);
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions
