Description of the workplace
Lund University School of Aviation (LUSA) is a department within Lund University Faculty of Engineering. LUSA strives to be a knowledge centre within the broad Aeronautical Sciences. Research is especially established within Aviation Safety, Unmanned Aerial Systems and Sustainable Aviation. LUSA is located at the airport in Ljungbyhed and the research will be conducted in collaboration between research groups and LUSA’s different educational programmes; including a training programme for commercial civil pilots, commissioned education of pilots in the Swedish Airforce, as well as commercial remote pilots. The senior lecturer in aviation safety sciences will be asked to lead the development of the research area at the department by attracting and conduct research as well as supervise PhD students and undergraduate students. The research will have access to LUSA’s facilities and infrastructures including airplanes, flight simulators, and unmanned aerial systems, but also to other Lund University facilities such as the VR Lab and Humlab.

The senior lecturer is expected to conduct teaching within the established and reputable MSc programme in Human Factors and Systems Safety; a programme which attracts students with experiences from working in high-risk organisations worldwide. Within the position the senior lecturer will also have the possibility to develop and conduct new courses within the new MSc programme in Risk, Safety and Crisis Management-Engineering.

Subject
Aeronautical Sciences focusing on Aviation Safety Science and Human Factors in the wider socio-technical aviation system.

Subject description
The subject includes a systems perspective to how safety emerges from interactions and relations between actors and artefacts in the complex aviation system. This approach can include research traditions such as Ergonomics, Cognitive Systems Engineering, Resilience Engineering and/or Science and Technology Studies (STS). The subject sees safety and risk as emergent properties of the same kinds of processes: strategies to adapt locally to perceived variability in the socio-technical system. The subject contrasts with research traditions which, in a more reductionistic manner, explains safety and risk to individual components’/actors’ individual behaviour or cognitive processes.

2 SI Leader

Lunds universitet, Humaniora och teologi, Historiska institutionen

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 45 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace

SI-PASS (Collaborative Learning / Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is a very successful pedagogical model that was developed in the USA in the 1970s and has spread to many higher education institutions worldwide, including most institutions in Sweden. The European Centre for SI-PASS at Lund University is one of five centers in the world responsible for informing, training and evaluating SI-PASS, and has overall responsibility for SI-PASS in Europe.

As an SI leader in Asian Studies, you are employed as amanuens at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies and receive your SI leader training from the European Center for SI-PASS. You will work in close cooperation with both teachers and those responsible for the SI program in your department, as well as with other SI leaders, both within and outside the same subject.

We offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme.

Being employed as an SI leader gives you leadership experience and attractive leadership training. Through SI leadership, you gain in-depth subject knowledge and pedagogical experience, as well as valuable professional contacts with the department/faculty, other SI leaders and the student body. Experience shows that former SI leaders are very competitive in the labor market.

As an SI leader, you are also part of a worldwide network of SI leaders in a number of countries (such as the USA, Australia, South Africa, Canada, the UK and Ireland), including the opportunity to participate in international conferences and events.

Read more on the University website about being a Lund University employee Work at Lund University

Work duties and areas of responsibility

As an SI leader, you will regularly (on average 2 times/month) organize meetings where you lead student groups in your subject according to standard SI methodology. Students learn to see each other as learning resources and are trained in collaborative learning.

The SI leader's task is to lead the students and structure the SI sessions so that they function optimally. The SI leader should not teach or present any new material, but the group should work together on the course content already presented by the teachers. The SI leader acts as a support and sounding board in this process.

The tasks for this position include more specifically:

  • On average 2 times/month preparing and leading an SI session in Asian Studies, after completing SI leader training
  • Recording and reporting attendance after each SI session
  • Write a reflective report after each SI session
  • Achedule your own SI sessions and otherwise assist with SI administration
  • Participate in SI supervision when offered

You can therefore apply for the position without having completed SI leader training. In addition, great importance is attached to personal suitability.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • You have good results in the relevant training
  • You have leadership experience (e.g. in sports, scouting, etc.)
  • You are able to cooperate easily with others
  • You can work independently
  • You have been recommended by a teacher or by your SI leader
