Research Specialist - Meyer Lab
We have an opportunity for a Research Specialist to join the laboratory of Dr. Barbara Meyer on-site at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, CA. The Meyer laboratory carries out pioneering research on the mechanisms of cell-fate determination, genome editing, the role of chromosome structure and modification in gene regulation, and the molecular evolution of chromosome-wide mechanisms of gene control in the nematode C. elegans, with an emphasis on X-chromosome dosage compensation. Approaches include genetics, genomics, single-molecule imaging, and structural studies including X-ray crystallography. Principal Responsibilities:
• Perform genetic, molecular, genomic, and single-molecule experiments and analysis (including CRISPR-mediated genome editing, ChIP-qPCR, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, Hi-C, and single-molecule imaging) for research projects.• Identify methodological problems in research protocols and assist in implementing modifications to optimize experimental results.
• Use software applications to analyze Illumina and other high-throughput data and assist others in data analysis.
• Prepare and present written or oral progress reports, including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data.
• Train others in complex technical protocols.
• Conduct literature reviews to determine suitable research methods.
• Operate and help maintain common lab equipment.
Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, or Biochemistry is required.• At least 2-5 years of postdoctoral research experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience with bioinformatics.
• In-depth knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.
• Ability to make sound decisions based on knowledge and experience.
• Ability to make research presentations and draft research manuscripts.

We are currently looking for a detail-oriented, proactive Research Specialist – Flow Cytometry to work in the Moody Foundation Flow Cytometry Core facility under the direction of Dr. Sean Morrison at the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute (CRI), UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. The Morrison lab’s goal is to better understand the mechanisms that regulate stem cell function and how cancer cells hijack these mechanisms to enable tumor formation. We are currently looking for a highly skilled Research Specialist – Scientific Software Programming to develop software for computational biological image analysis and work as a team member in Dr. Tamir Gonen’s lab in UCLA’s Department of Biological Chemistry. The Gonen lab works toward understanding how membrane proteins help cells maintain homeostasis. To that end, they study channels, transporters, and receptors structurally and functionally. The chosen candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team which includes computational scientists, biophysicists, biochemists, and cryo-EM specialists to develop a software package for biological structure determination using image analysis of biological electron diffraction patterns. The chosen candidate will work with co-investigators to tailor analyses for their individual manuscripts for peer-review submission, including electronic literature review. This software will become a part of MicroED technique developed by the Gonen laboratory.Essential Duties:
Develop a software package for image analysis of biological diffraction patterns.
Prototype modules of the system using Python and numpy.
Implement and optimize the code using C++.
Integrate developed modules with the software package.
Develop conda installer for the software package.
Write code documentation.
Write in-line documentation for each software module specifying input, output, and function performed.
Develop web-based documentation for the package that will contain list of modules, description of their respective functionalities, and specified relation between them.
Write software package user manual.
Develop interactive web-based manual for the software package.
Consult with the members of the group as for the expectations and requirements.
Provide test data sets to accompany the manual.

The candidate is expected to identify or streamline interesting targets and validate/elucidate their role in drug resistance using functional next generation sequencing technologies like ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and chromatin conformation studies on CRISPR-Cas9 based knockout models and mice xenografts. At the end of the project, the candidate is expected to be familiar in establishing the reprogramming of enhancer regulation which makes the cancer cells to be aggressive.
