Job description

FitOptiVis project has three to five (3-5) open trainee/research assistant positions as part of ongoing research cyber-physical systems and highly efficient image and video processing systems. Particularly, two trainees will participate in research on modelling our IP blocks using the common modelling language (QRML) developed within the EU wide project, two will focus on AI techniques applied to sensor data, and one will build a visualization for our IC measurement system. For all jobs, basic programming skills are needed. For the modelling tasks knowledge of well-known modelling languages (like UML) is an asset. For AI tasks knowledge on machine learning methods and/or sensor fusion are assets. The visualization task would benefit from experience in handling measurement data and visualization of graphs.

As a summer trainee/research assistant, you will be working under the guidance of the group members. The position and exact work duties will be tailored according to the background and interests of the applicant, as well as the needs of the project during the summertime.

Duration: 3 months
Suggested time period: 1.6.—30.9.2021
Note: the starting date and duration can be adjusted to meet the preferences of the applicant. The duration of the positions may possibly continue longer.

 Who can apply to the positions?

Those who want to learn about computing algorithms used in computer vision, cryptography or modelling of such systems and monitoring their performance. Since most of the hardware implementation has already been done by the project team, the jobs are suitable also for less experienced persons who are willing to learn and look for solutions to problems from new perspectives. Therefore, basic skills in programming and AI are sufficient for these tasks – an innovative mind is the most important asset. Good working knowledge of English is required, as all of the documentation is in English.

Details on the open positions

(1)   Modelling Internships (1-2 positions)

The task is to develop a models of our IP blocks using QRML language. The language has been developed in the project by our European partners, and now it will be applied to model our hardware blocks. Examples of the language, as well as support will be available. Blocks include convolutional accelerators, cryptography cores and low power management blocks (DVFS). If time permits, the modelling will be extended to cover a full system, possibly integrating results from the other trainees. Please contact Tero Säntti (teansa@utu.fi) for more information.

Deliverables: Models of the blocks, reports on the properties of the language, if any room for improvement is found.

(2)   AI and sensor fusion Internships (1-2 positions)

The work concerns AI on sensor fusion data. In practice, various types of sensor data (accelerometer, biopotentials, etc.) will measured and sensor accuracy improvement will be investigated by applying AI algorithm to the data. The student should be familiar with implementing AI algorithms (PyTorch, TensorFlow), simple electronic measurement techniques, and programming in Python. Courses such as DTEK8086 Sensors and Interfaces and DTEK0065 Programming Lab Course (or equivalent skills) should be completed. Deliverables: AI prototype implementation, suggestions and recommendations for improvement of the prototype.

 

(3)   Visualization Internship (1 position)

The task is to visualize the dataflows from our IC measurement system, and include control functions. Visualizations will be implemented using FIVIS, a visualization tool developed by our European partners. Reference design is available, using LabView as the platform. If time permits, the visualization will be extended to cover items from AI and sensor fusion team, and possibly even to the satellite instrument prototypes developed in FORESAIL project. Deliverables: Visualization framework for the IC measurement system. Reports on the properties of the FIVIS framework, if any room for improvement is found.

Apprentices as system integration IT specialist

Client/Server-architectures, networks in companies and communication around the world are standard now. However, the "devil is in the detail" sometimes. So that with IT infrastructure functions, components must be planned carefully and be installed – PCs, servers, network components, software, periphery devices etc.

Would you like it to help in such projects or to support the users with the use of these devices and all this in a scientific research environment?

Pleasure in dealing with computers and people belongs to the most important requirement to be successful in this occupation. Furthermore one should have good basic knowledge of science, logical reasoning power and a good knowledge of English. Technical detailed knowledge must be also transmitted to layman; therefore, the system integration IT specialist (f/m/d) should be sociable and communicative and have interest in the planning, realizing and operating of IT systems.

Overview of the apprenticeships:

Apprenticeships begin yearly on the 1st of September and last 3 years. All together two apprenticeship places per year are available at HZB.

Here a small selection of the knowledge and skills imparted to you during your apprenticeship:

• Conceiving and realizing complicated IT systems
• Installation and configuring linked up IT systems
• Data processing
• Realisation and control of projects
• Removal of disturbances in client systems
• Administration of IT-Serversystems
• Consulting and training users
• Presentation of system solution

There is the possibility of additional qualifications, e.g. Cisco or Linux certificates and the completion of an internship abroad.

Requirements:

• Intermediate or upper secondary school leaving certificate
• Good grades in English, Mathematics and Physics
• High degree of willingness to learn
• Self-responsibility

The apprenticeship pay is based on the Collective Agreement for Apprentices for the Public Service (TVAöD).

Internship: Methods and Tools for Multi Energy System Simulation

IEK-10 focuses on the optimal design and operation of integrated, decentralized energy systems with a high share of renewable energy. Computer simulation and numerical optimization are our essential tools to arrive at efficient, reliable and cost-effective solutions. We contribute both to the development of mathematical models and to the development of improved simulation methods and optimization algorithms. Our methods and software-tools are validated against operating data of real systems. Furthermore, we conduct comprehensive case studies in order to test and further improve the scalability and the performance of our models and algorithms. Specially adapted methods and codes enable us to exploit the potential of high performance computing with the aim of solving particularly large and complex problems.

Scope of the Internship:
Due to the increase of renewable energy share in the electrical network, the decarbonization focus has also been extended to other energy sectors. Sector coupling refers to the concept of interconnecting different energy sectors with the power sector, which can offer flexibility to the power sector and contribute to the decarbonization progress in other sectors. Therefore, new and efficient simulation methods and tools are needed in order to illustrate interactions between different energy sectors. Your goal will be the development and combination of modeling and simulation methods.

Your Profile:

• You are a student with very good background in Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a comparable subject
• Interests in numerical methods and analysis, and energy system modeling and simulation
• Basic understanding of energy system modeling and simulation is preferable
• Good knowledge of and some experience in a programming language, preferably C++ or Python
• Fluent in English (spoken and written)
