The Silberberg Lab at the Department of Neuroscience is searching for talented and enthusiastic postdocs interested in studying the neural networks of the basal ganglia underlying sensorimotor functions using electrophysiological and optical methods.

Department

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.

Research Group

The Silberberg lab uses electrophysiological, morphological, optical, and computational methods to study neural circuits in the neocortex and basal-ganglia underlying sensorimotor functions. More information about the lab can be found here:

Duties

The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency, be able to collaborate with others in a team, good communication skills (English speaking and writing), and be willing to supervise students. Successful candidates should have a strong neuroscience background with documented experience in electrophysiology and/or imaging. Experience in surgery, animal behavior, computer programming, and manuscript writing are highly advantageous. The project will involve in vivo and ex vivo patch-clamp recordings, optogenetics, and imaging in the cortex and basal ganglia in mice.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. Scholarships are provided for the first two years and may be extended to salaries according to progress and available funding.

Postdoctoral studies in DNA damage and ubiquitin signaling (scholarship)

 

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB, https://ki.se/en/cmb/department-of-cell-and-molecular-biology) is one of five departments conducting advanced experimental research under one roof in the new building of Biomedicum, Karolinska Institutet (https://ki.se), one of Europe's largest laboratories with ultramodern facilities. CMB is a department with a strong focus on basic science and conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Division

The successful applicant will join a smaller group currently comprising four members. The research team is physically located at the Biomedicum quarter 7A and share lab with four other groups working on different aspects of biology, including genomic integrity/DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, metabolism and protein ubiquitylation. The position is placed in the research group of Olle Sangfelt (https://ki.se/en/cmb/olle-sangfelts-group) and the projects are focused on investigating how ubiquitin ligases controls different regulatory pathways essential for cellular life, in particular cell cycle control, DNA repair and cell motility. The overall goal of the research is to translate basic scientific discoveries to cancer biology and development of novel treatment strategies.

Duties

The projects are centered around functional analysis of ubiquitin ligases in combination with interdisciplinary translational studies and involves collaborations with both national and international researchers. The postdoc will operate closely with the group leader to jointly develop and organize laboratory duties, including organizing meetings/courses, ordering of lab-related items, introduction of new employees to maintain a high standard of professionalism within research group. The postdoc will carry out independent laboratory research to functionally explore specific ubiquitin ligases regulating critical targets that directly influence cancer ¨driver¨ and ¨escape¨ programs. The postdoc will also aid in biomarker discovery through close collaboration with scientific partners in the field. One important aim of the research is to unravel mechanisms of drug resistance and specific vulnerabilities in cancer that can lead to the development novel therapeutic approaches.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoc with extensive experience in functional characterization of proteins regulating DNA repair/checkpoints, cell cycle and cell motility. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong academic record, including publications in well-reputed scientific journals (including first authorships). Documented technological experience in microscopy, protein interaction/activity analysis/screens and regulated gene silencing/overexpression systems, good knowledge in written and spoken English is required. Experience from ubiquitin research, transcriptional regulation, bioinformatics and cancer genetics is an advantage. The candidate should appreciate problem solving and development of new technologies required to bring the project forward but also demonstrate an ability to complete projects within a defined time frame.

Doctoral (PhD) student position in RNA and cancer biology (KID)

 


To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The position is placed in the laboratory of Marianne Farnebo, which currently includes 9 employees - 4 PhD students, 3 postdocs and a lab manager- and locates at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at Karolinska Institutet. The laboratory studies the function of non-coding RNA and RNA-binding proteins in DNA repair and chromatin remodeling, and how defects in these processes contribute to cancer. A number of cutting-edge techniques required to study RNA are already up and running in Farnebo laboratory, including single-molecule RNA FISH, RNA tethering, live-cell imaging and laser-micro irradiation.

Farnebo laboratory recently moved to Biomedicum, a new interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna under one roof to promote collaboration. Biomedicum house approximately 1,600 researchers and other personnel and allow expensive equipment to be shared and utilised more effectively.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

Accumulating evidence reveals that RNA plays a key role in the regulation of DNA repair and genome stability, however, the underlying mechanism(s) remains poorly understood. The PhD project will focus on characterizing the involvement of RNA and associated proteins in the signaling and repair of DNA damage. This project is conceptually novel and expected to have important consequences on our understanding of this essential process and whether these functions are altered in cancer, which could have implications for cancer therapy.

The PhD student will practice a number of molecular and cellular techniques, including cancer cell culture, RNAi, qPCR, immunofluorescence microscopy, immunoprecipitation of proteins, RNAs and DNA (IP, RIP, ChIP). He/she will also learn novel and powerful techniques, such as single-molecule RNA FISH and tethering of RNA and proteins to chromatin.

To more efficiently exploit the full potential of the MOSAiC expedition, the M-VRE project develops online services for the exploration, analysis and visualisation of the MOSAiC data in a "Virtual Research Environment". A central tool in the M-VRE is webODV, the online version of the widely used Ocean Data View software for interactive, efficient and interdisciplinary data analysis. Being part of the M-VRE project, this PostDoc position aims to compile and harmonise MOSAiC raw data into extensive ODV collections to be used with webODV.

PostDoc position “Automated ocean data QC with deep learning MOSAiC” (Data Scientist) (m/f/d)

 


To more efficiently exploit the full potential of the MOSAiC expedition, the M-VRE project develops online services for the exploration, analysis and visualisation of the MOSAiC data in a "Virtual Research Environment". This PostDoc project aims to adapt and develop a deep learning algorithm for supporting scientists with the quality control of ocean temperature measurements. This includes training, validation and evaluation of the algorithm on state of the art computer infrastructures, e.g. GPUs. Additionally, a web service will be developed and implemented in AWIs computing centre, based on the deep learning algorithm, to allow ocean scientists to perform online data quality control.

Associate Head, School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (Malaysia)

 

The University seeks to appoint a dynamic, enterprising and inspirational leader to lead the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The successful candidate will be an established academic with proven track record of teaching, research and leadership in any aspect of statistics and data science, or a related discipline, with some preference for our current specialisation in actuarial mathematics or for computational aspects of statistical data science.  The appointee will be expected to lead both teaching and research operations in their area of specialisation and more broadly across the University, and to contribute to the development and teaching on our programmes. The successful candidate should be an established academic with proven track record of teaching, research and leadership in  business or a business-related discipline.  The successful candidate will be expected to lead both teaching and research operations in their area of specialisation and more broadly across the University. The Associate Head, School of Social Sciences (Malaysia) will also be expected to develop strong links with the industry as well as to provide strategic leadership in the area of Business and Enterprise.

 

The post holder will be expected to have experience in leading an academic unit (College, Faculty or School), improving performance and in managing both people and finances. 

The role will be based at the University's campus in Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia, and as such, the successful applicant will need to have the necessary visa clearances to live and work in Malaysia. Programmes will be delivered in English and so fluency in English is essential.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to the leadership team of HWUM and the School of Social Sciences globally.
  2. Create teaching, research and industrial synergies within the range of Accountancy, Business, Finance, Management and Psychology programmes offered.
  3. Take an active role in student recruitment and be responsible for the overall growth of the Schools in enrolment, reputation and impact.
  4. Assume overall leadership and accountability in making sure that programmes delivered to the right quality and standard and ensure that quality assurance processes, such as student feedback, academic reviews and the professional accreditation, are carried out effectively and timely.
  5. Lead manage and coach for high performance of a team of academic staff and be responsible for academic planning and workload distribution.
  6. Working with the Deputy Provost and Heads of Schools in the selection and appointment of new academics, research, professional services and support staff
  7. Ensure students well-being and support student activities including managing issues of discipline, appeals and complaints.
  8. Assume overall reasonability in ensuring that efficient and effective operations at School level.
  9. Support the development of the campus including through participation in the planning process, the Executive Management Committee and the Academic Council.
  10. Undertake teaching and assessment duties on academic programmes.  Support colleagues in other Schools at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in the delivery of courses and other activities to support the delivery of HWUM's aims.
  11. Set a leading example in building and conducting world class research and research capabilities in the University's research areas globally.
  12. Develop and maintain strong links with business and industry, external organisations and the education sector.

Our Team

The theory group of Adrian Kantian is working on strongly correlated quantum systems, with a special focus on unconventional and high-temperature superconductivity in novel model systems and ultimately aiming at proposals of realistic materials and devices based on these models. A major aspect of its work is the development of quantitatively reliable theory beyond any currently available, in order to accurately predict the properties of these novel high-temperature superconducting systems. Numerical techniques such as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) feature heavily in this, as well as increasingly dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). These approaches are complemented with analytical techniques as necessary. This work further has multiple connections to other research topics pursued in the group, such as low-dimensional correlated systems (2D magnets and quasi-1D superconducting materials such as the Beechgard and Fabre salts), flatband systems and analog quantum simulations of correlated lattice models in ultracold atomic gases.

Besides the PI, who is in the process of moving major parts of his research from Uppsala University to Heriot-Watt, the group currently consists of two postdoctoral researchers, with a third one being dually affiliated with another group, as well as a PhD-student. Two more PhD-students will be hired to join the group within the coming year. The group has an extended network of established contacts and collaborations with leading theoretical and experimental groups in the UK, Europe and the US.

Detailed decription, key duties and responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this position would work in close collaboration with the PI and other group members on the basic theory of novel high-temperature superconducting quasi-1D systems, such as e.g. 1D quantum wires in contact with external baths.  The position requires a researcher with a strong theoretical understanding and a background in numerical many-body physics, and specifically either matrix product state-based techniques (DMRG, etc.) or auxiliary-field/determinantal quantum Monte Carlo, or both. A working knowledge of the theory of strongly correlated quantum systems and superconductivity in particular is essential.

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated researcher willing to work as part of a group.

  • General tasks will involve scientific research, the communication with other investigators involved in this collaborative project as well as the preparation of scientific papers and the presentation of research at conferences.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to conduct and lead their own research, whilst also supervising the activities of junior group members and PhD students if required.
  • Work in this position entails building internal contacts and participating in internal networks for the exchange of information and forming relationships for future collaboration. It involves working with academic colleagues on areas of shared research interest and contribute to collaborative decision making. Join external networks to share information and identify potential sources of funds.
  • This position further requires contribution, under supervision, to the planning of research projects, including the development of new grant/contract proposals, and making internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding, as well as forming relationships for future collaboration.

  9. Must be able to work as part of the group at Heriot-Watt and the satellite group at Uppsala University, as well as more widely with the collaborators at other Universities.

Travel:

The work in this position, while based at Heriot-Watt University in the UK will entail some degree of travel, as parts of the group will be based at Uppsala University (Sweden) for the coming 2+ years. This may necessitate one or several stays at UU in order to facilitate knowledge- and skills-transfer between the research associate in this position and those group-members primarily based in Sweden. It is highly likely that further travel needs will arise from visits of our national and international collaborators in the UK, Europe and the US, as well as for presenting research results at conferences, workshops and seminars.
