The Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) conducts experimental basic research in molecular cell biology, intergrative biology and infection and immune biology. Project description
The aim of the project is to improve our understanding of the molecular processes involved in radiotherapy-induced carcinogenesis occurring as a late consequence among childhood cancer survivors. Genetic and epigenetic changes representing signs of radiation-induced carcinogenesis will be studied in normal cells exposed to fractionated radiation (simulating radiotherapy). Specifically, the project aims at studying: 1) Mechanistic analysis of radiotherapy-related carcinogenesis based on risk alleles (SNPs); 2) Epigenetic modifications as a result of fractionated radiation exposure of normal cells; 3) The role of environmental factors in this process. Additionally, the candidate will be involved in another project exploring individual differences in normal tissue response concerning early and late radiotherapy-induced side effects such as skin reactions.

Main responsibilities
The position involves application of cell culture and molecular biology techniques to analyse DNA damage, cell death and genetic and epigenetic modifications induced by ionising radiation. All exposure facilities are installed at Stockholm University. The candidate will also participate in other related projects running in the group.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Doctoral degree in the field of radiation biology, molecular or cell biology, cancer biology, or similar areas is a suitable background. Experience with techniques to culture cells, perform siRNA and CRISPR/Cas9 knockdown/knockout, analyse epigenetic modifications, measure DNA damage and repair as well as to assay cell death is regarded as an asset. Additional merits include the use of methods such as real time qPCR, Western blot, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry and SNP analysis.

Project description
Within the ERC Advanced Grant GAS-WAT (Gases in Water, Prof. Lars G.M. Pettersson, PI) one subproject is to develop a highly accurate force-field for water including dissociation. This will build on advanced electrostatic response for intermediate and long range and machine-learned CCSD(T)-level short-range interactions. This will be coupled with deep neural network training to extend applicability both in space and time.

A particular focus will be applications using, e.g., umbrella sampling to investigate possible special structures in water associated with proposed HDL and LDL environments (Nilsson&Pettersson, Nature Commun. 6 (2015) 8998) and their potential role in dissolution and transport of gases in water.

The theory group of Prof. Pettersson works within the XSoLaS combined experimental and theory group in the Chemical Physics Division at the Department of Physics within Stockholm University (www.xsolasgroup.fysik.su.se).

Main responsibilities
The position involves methods development and implementation of force-field and machine-learning techniques with particular focus on applications to water in its various aggregation states.

Researcher in Medical Radiation Physics (temporary employment)

Project description
The position will be associated with the project SINFONIA - Radiation risk appraisal for detrimental effects from medical exposure during management of patients with lymphoma or brain tumour (Home - Sinfonia (sinfonia-appraisal.eu) funded from the Euratom research and training programme under grant agreement No 945196.

The project is focused on the development of a comprehensive system for personalised dosimetry in radiotherapy accounting for stray radiation dose and the risks associated with it. Personalised models of patients will be used with analytical algorithms to estimate dose distributions in out-of-field and partially exposed organs during photon radiation therapy.

Treatment protocols applied in the clinic will be used together with machine-specific parameters to simulate dose delivery characteristics. Measurements and Monte Carlo simulations will be used to estimate out-of-field and in-field dose distribution from stray radiation (neutrons) during proton therapy with the beam scanning technique. 

Main responsibilities
The position involves research and developent of a comprehensive methodology that includes measurement and simulation procedures to account for stray radiation dose in patients with lymphoma or/and brain tumours that receive radiation therapy with photon or proton beams.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in dosimetry, Monte Carlo simulations and radiobiological modelling of the effect of radiation on cells as well as risk assessment following medical radiation exposure. Project description
The interdisciplinary field of quantum information processing and communication connects quantum mechanics/optics/electronics with classical information theory to achieve tasks in information and communication that are impossible with classical methods. This fusion has led to new concepts such as the qubit, quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography, and quantum computing.

Quantum information has also revitalized the discussions about the foundations of quantum theory. The field is currently very active and is driving for progress in both physics and computer science, information technology. The research objectives of our group include experimental preparation and characterization of multipartite entanglement and tests on the foundations of quantum mechanics, such as the locality and the contextually.

In quantum communication, the objectives are the implementations of quantum key distribution, quantum random number generation, secure quantum multiparty communication, and qubit and entanglement assisted communication protocols.

The aim of this project is to develop security tools for quantum cryptography protocols and communication system solutions. The practical security of quantum systems verification will be guaranteed by successive iterations of security loophole demonstrations and countermeasure implementations.

This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology.

Main responsibilities
The postdoc will be working with programming, data analysis, benchmarking, and modelling, as well as application of the developed methods to secure quantum communication project.

PhD Position - Cryo-EM of Sars-CoV-2 Virus-Host Membrane Interactions


The Ernst Ruska Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C) at Forschungszentrum Jülich is one of the world-leading electron microscopy centres with more than 15 electron microscopes. The Structural Biology division of the ER-C investigates the structural and molecular mechanism of membrane biology and pushes the development of cryo-EM related methodology. At the ER-C-3 ( https://www.fz-juelich.de/er-c/er-c-3 ), we use a comprehensive electron microscopy approach to study the biological structures of membrane-associated protein complexes. Our main methods of investigation are single-particle electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) as well electron cryo-tomography (cryo-ET) that we are also developing to advance existing imaging technologies towards high-resolution structural biology.

PhD Position - Cryo-EM of Sars-CoV-2 Virus-Host Membrane Interactions

Your Job:

As a PhD student you will work on cryo-EM studies of virus-host membrane interactions at the ER-C-3 in the field of Structural Biology at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has major global impact on human society, economy and daily life. The pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection remains unclear, but most likely results from both a direct cytopathic effect of the virus and a pathogenic inflammation-dominated immune response. To gain knowledge about the virological and immunological drivers of COVID-19 pathogenesis and the parameters of immune protection, we united experts from 7 Helmholtz Centers in 4 Helmholtz Research Fields (Health, Environment, Information and Aeronautics, Space & Transport) and 3 university partners across Germany, to create an internationally visible and interdisciplinary network called CoViPa, in which the successful candidates will be embedded. Your tasks include:

  • Investigate critical virus-host membrane interactions responsible for the cytopathogenic effect of SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses.
  • Work on high-resolution cryo-EM structure determination of in situ cellular samples using correlative light and electron microscopy approaches.
  • Employ advanced imaging methods, including cryo-EM, correlative light and electron microscopy/tomography (CLEM), live cell imaging and super-resolution microscopy as well as associated image processing.

Your Profile:

  • Master`s degree in biochemistry, molecular or cell biology or related field.
  • Strong experimental skills in molecular cell biology experiment design including associated data analysis
  • Prior knowledge of structural biology and/or light microscopy techniques is of great advantage
  • Strong communication skills in English and ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team.

Sport science with focus on behavioral science

Subject area description

The interdisciplinary subject sport science focuses on sport, exercise and physical activity.  Sport science includes studies of the human body and the individual performing sport and physical activity, the development of sport culture in society and sport as a collective concept for elite- and recreational sport as well as outdoor life. Within sport science, basic knowledge about human psychology and human behavior is crucial to understand how successful sustainable health promotive behavioral changes can be achieved.

Job assignments

This position of senior lecturer includes teaching and skills development, with the aim that the teaching will be research connected. In this position you are expected to:

  • Teach courses in both Swedish and English in behavioral science (both theory and practice) in all sport science educations at the Department (teacher education focusing on physical education and health, health promotion and sports coaching).
  • Develop, prepare and deliver entire courses or parts of courses and be able to take on course responsibilities.
  • Grade examination assignments.
  • Supervise theses at first, second and third cycle.
  • Manage research within the subject area including applying for external research grants

Eligibility

The eligibility for employment as a teacher is stated in chapter 4, sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s employment procedure.

Those who qualify to be employed will have demonstrated educational skill, have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject or corresponding scientific competence or any other skill of importance in the context of the content of the employment and the duties that are to be included.

Assessment

In making the appointment, special emphasis will be placed on the degree of scientific and teaching ability, which will be accorded equal importance in the assessment process.

Scientific proficiency must be documented through international scientific publications in the subject area. Documented experience of research within behavioral change within sport science is required. Publications where sport science are combined with food and nutrition is a merit. Successful work in obtaining external funding is a merit.

When assessing pedagogical skills, special emphasis is placed on teaching sport science with focus on behavioral science at university level. Assessment of pedagogical skills will include the candidates’ experience of planning, implementation, management, evaluation, supervision and examination, as well as course development and the development of educational materials and similar educational activities. Both pedagogical and educational skills and experience must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed.

Formal training in higher education teaching or equivalent is a merit as well as experience of supervision at first, second or third cycle.

Documented ability and skill in collaborating with others and leading and administering teaching and research, and in informing and cooperating with the surrounding community, as well as working for the utilisation of the university’s research, will be deemed a merit.

We are looking for a self-motivated, flexible, structured and creative person with good collaboration and relationship-building skills and good analytical ability.

Besides scientific proficiency and pedagogical skills, experience of practical application of behavioral methods within sport science is meriting

A position as PhD Research Fellow for developing satellite space services are available at Centre for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS) and the Department of Technology Systems (ITS).


CENSSS is a Centre for researched based innovation (SFI) at the Department of Technology Systems at Kjeller. The Centre is funded by the Norwegian Research Council for 5 years, with a possible 3 year extension. CENSSS addresses scientific and technological challenges, as well as business opportunities, within "new-space" satellites for Earth Observation and within Space Exploration “to the Moon and Mars”.

Job description

There is an abundance of satellite data generated every day, which can be utilized to provide new services and applications for our society. The PhD fellow will work with either (1) on-board processing development (for example on FPGA, GPU, CPU) of Earth Observation sensor data, (2) deep learning on specific data sets (for example Copernicus data) or (3) data fusion of different types of data sets to provide new insight.


The specific project description will be developed together with the supervisor and the partners, depending on the skillset and interest of the PhD fellow. It is expected that the PhD fellow will work closely with one or more partners at CENSSS.


Qualification requirements

Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, electronics or related fields

The PhD candidate must be eligible to obtain a “restricted” security clearance according to the Norwegian National Security Act (Lov om Nasjonal Sikkerhet, a.k.a. “Sikkerhetsloven”), i.e. preferably a citizen of Norway or a NATO country

Postdoctoral Fellow in Political Science (R-QUEST) - second announcement

The Department of Political Science is a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The department currently has 39 permanent academic staff members, 30 PhD fellows, 39 postdoctoral fellows and 12 administrative employees. About 1500 students are currently enrolled at the BA, MA and PhD levels. In addition to political science, the department has interdisciplinary study programs in International Studies, Public Administration and Leadership and a master’s program in Peace and Conflict Studies. The department hosts the interdisciplinary Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) and has research groups in several subfields of political science (e.g. comparative institutions and regimes; policy, bureaucracy, and organization; politics of energy and climate; nuclear weapons).


About the position

The Department of Political Science is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow (SKO 1352) with a specialization in research policy or research governance. The successful applicant will be part of “The Centre for Research Quality and Policy Impact Studies” (R-Quest), an eight-year collaborative research project funded by the Norwegian Research Council and coordinated by the Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU). The appointment is for a fixed period of 4 years, with a 25% teaching requirement.


The R-Quest project investigates the nature and mechanisms of research quality in an encompassing way, including the individual, organizational, and national level. In this, R-Quest focuses on three closely related questions concerning research quality: 1. How are notions of research quality negotiated, established and practiced, and what are the mechanisms through which these notions affect policy? 2. What are the drivers of high quality research, and what is the role of policy in developing outstanding research? 3. What are the effects of high quality research on the society? A central aim of R-Quest is to help policy makers in their efforts to develop the best framework conditions for high quality research. R-Quest is a comparative research project including partners from five European countries (Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden & the U.K.) and the project employs both quantitative and qualitative methods including, for example, bibliometric analyses, survey analyses, or interviews.


The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to actively contribute to the research agenda and the research environment of the R-Quest project. More specifically, this includes designing and conducting a study on conditions and drivers for high quality research, focusing on the national and/or organizational level, and the potential links between research performance and differences in specific policies or governance arrangements. Moreover, the Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to actively participate in research project meetings, and other relevant research activities in the context of R-Quest. More about the position

The project is headed by Research Professor Liv Langfeld at NIFU and the Department of Political Science’s participation is coordinated by Associate Professor Jens Jungblut. The project is funded under the FORINNPOL initiative of the Research Council of Norway. R-Quest runs for eight years from 2016-2024. The project participants from the Department of Political Science are part of the department’s research group on Policy, Bureaucracy, and Organization (PBO).


The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines. Appointed postdoctoral fellows are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period. Applicants must write a research proposal that lays out a promising research agenda, including a publication plan that can be fulfilled in the course of four years. The Postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to research activities and dissemination within the R-QUEST project.

Formal Qualifications


A comprehensive assessment of the applicant's scientific qualifications forms the basis of appointment.


Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (Ph.D) in Political Science or a closely related discipline before taking up the post.

For applicants who have yet to receive their PhD degree, the Doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline (August 15, 2021). Such applicants should note the date of submission of their PhD in the cover letter. Appointment is dependent on successful completion of the public defense of the doctoral thesis.
