Duties

The PhD programme consists of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time study) and ends with the public defence of the doctoral thesis.  PhD students are expected to work on their thesis project and actively participate in the department’s research environment. In addition to devoting themselves to their research, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to undertake other tasks such as teaching, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. These tasks will not exceed 20% of their working hours. Regulations concerning the appointment of full time postgraduate students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§.

The main language of the PhD program is English. However, non-Swedish speaking students are expected to acquire basic skills in Swedish during the period of employment. There are opportunities to participate in language courses taught at the University.

Qualifications

To be admitted, you must meet both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirement is a completed master’s degree or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way.

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Those who have completed course requirements of at least 30 credits in the subject area (or equivalent) or areas of relevance to the subject area, of which at least 15 credits consist of independent projects at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad, meet the specific admission requirements for the third-cycle programme in sociology of law.

Assessment criteria

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are admitted to PhD studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. The primary criteria for making an appointment to a doctoral studentship is the ability of the student to benefit from PhD studies and successfully complete the program. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

The applicants’ research proposal, previous dissertations and published papers in sociology of law or related disciplines within social sciences or law, play an important role in assessing their suitability. Moreover, applicants must have a very good ability to express themselves in speech and writing.

As third cycle studies in sociology of law are very demanding, the applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently under time constraints. Good collaboration and communication skills are also required, as is proficiency in both written and spoken English.

The application must contain:

  • A cover letter in Swedish or English of max 1 000 words, which contains a brief presentation of yourself and your qualifications, as well as a brief explanation of why you are interested in third cycle studies at the Department of Sociology of Law at Lund University.
  • Degree project corresponding to at least 15 credits on advanced level in sociology of law or other discipline deemed equivalent and other relevant publications. If the degree project or publication is written in a language other than Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English, a summary of maximum 1000 words is attached, including method, theory, analysis and results.
  • A CV in Swedish or English that demonstrated your qualifications for the third cycle program in sociology of law.
  • Degree and grade certificates in Swedish or English.

The Faculty of Law is offering one doctoral student position for a Doctor of Laws Degree in legal science.

Research within the doctoral education is conducted in one of the following subjects: jurisprudence, labour law, banking law, private law, EU law, fiscal law, public international law, administrative law, international environmental law, private international law, comparative law, constitutional law, environmental law, human rights, public law, civil and criminal procedure, law and economics, legal history, social and welfare law, and criminal law.

The Doctoral position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program on Humanities and Society (WASP-HS) that aims to realize excellent research and develop competence on the consequences and challenges of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems for humanity and society. This 10-year program is initiated and generously funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW) with 660 million SEK. In addition to this, the program receives support from collaborating industry and from participating universities. Major goals are more than 10 new faculty positions and more than 70 new PhDs. The WASP-HS graduate school provides foundations, perspectives, and state-of-the-art knowledge in the different disciplines taught by leading researchers in the field. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, researchers and practitioners in the field. It thus provides added value on top of the existing PhD programs at the partner universities, providing unique opportunities for students who are dedicated to achieving international research excellence with societal relevance.

The current doctoral student position is integrated into the research project: aicare - AI and Automated systems and the Right to Health - Revisiting law accounting for the exploitation of users preferences and values. The selected candidate will be both integrated in the WASP-HS graduate school and participate in the activities of the Health Law Research Centre and/or the Commercial Law Centre (ACLU), at the Faculty of Law. One of the intended supervisors is Docent, Senior lecturer Ana Nordberg.

Being part of a large research project, the doctoral project is expected to contribute to the aicare project aims and research questions. The doctoral project should analyse and interconnect different areas of law and regulation relevant to the implementation of AI in healthcare from the perspective of advancing personalised/precision medicine and should include ethical, economic and/or other societal perspectives. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Data protection and ethical issues raised by genetic sequencing from both the perspective of patients and public health
  • Clinical trials, certification and marketing approval of AI healthcare solutions for PM
  • The role and governance models for intellectual property and trade secrets enforcement
  • Liability mechanism’s role in the protection of patient integrity

Job assignments

Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies.

Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration. Before a doctorate has been awarded, however, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 section 2)

The researchers and teachers at the Faculty are expected to contribute to a dynamic research environment as well as to other Faculty activities, and to perform work primarily in the workplace provided by the Faculty.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 section 3)

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

  1. Has been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
  2. Has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
  3. Has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 7 section 39)

The special requirements are fulfilled by those who have completed a law programme and obtained the degree Master of Laws (juris kandidatexamen/juristexamen). The special requirements may also be fulfilled by those who can demonstrate other educational or particular professional experience where this is judged to provide the necessary qualification for doctoral studies comparable to that provided by the degree of Master of Laws (juris kandidatexamen/juristexamen) regarding both the subject for doctoral study and general legal education of importance for that subject.

Applicants with Swedish juristexamen/juris kandidatexamen degrees must have attained a grade average of BA in the compulsory courses of the undergraduate programme. Applicants holding other degrees must have attained in principle an equivalent grade average in comparable portions of the degree programme. Only where very special circumstances apply may the Faculty Board approve exemptions from this rule.

The applicant must have obtained the degree of Master of Laws or the equivalent no later than 2 March 2022.

Basis of Assessment

Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 section 5, chapter 7 sections 35, 41).

The applicant’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies and research will be assessed with reference to the selection criteria stated in the general study plan for third-cycle studies at the Faculty of Law, which are given in no particular order of importance.

The applicant's general competence:

  • Quality and content of the applicant's previous written work, such as a master's thesis
  • Ability to participate actively in the faculty´s research environment
  • Relevant educational background and grades/grade average
  • Relevant work experience

The scientific quality of the project description:

  • Ability to describe, question and discuss the current state of research
  • Sufficient clarity and logical coherence in the formulation of the aim and the research   questions
  • Stringency of legal reasoning and analysis
  • Adequate selection of theory and methods
  • Capacity for creativity and innovation in the formulation of the research questions and approaches
  • Clear expression and sufficient detail

Job description

The Department of Economics at Lund University seeks two postdoctoral fellows in economics. The holders will conduct independent research in economics, and are expected to cooperate with other researchers at the department, be willing to interact with students, and to actively participate in the common activities of the department. The position involves 20 percent teaching (the equivalent of about one course a year and some supervision of Bachelor and Master theses).

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a PhD in Economics or related discipline (e.g., Finance or Econometrics). The degree must not have been awarded more than three years ago, counted from the date of the application deadline (unless the applicant has been on parental leave or leave due to illness). Applications will also be accepted from persons who have not yet completed their PhD, but this condition must be satisfied at the time of employment.

Qualifications and basis of assessment

The main requirement is scholarly proficiency. Applicants must show a high degree of research expertise as manifested in the quality of their PhD dissertation and other publications.

A doctoral degree from a university outside Sweden is particularly meritorious.

Since the research environment at the Department of Economics is highly international, and since the position includes teaching and supervision in English, a very good command of the English language is required.

For appointment as postdoctoral fellow, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • a good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research, and teaching skill.

PhD-student, Liveability at the crossroad of religion, gender and sexuality

Work description

The PhD programme runs full time and the student will pursue the requirements of the PhD degree and actively participate in department activities.The position as a PhD student is a four-year full time employment that may require teaching or other departmental work up to 20%, which may lengthen the overall duration of the position to maximum five years.

The Department of Gender Studies has a well-established tradition of working within the fields of Queer and Trans studies. The call is open for research applications that seeks to bridge these academic fields with studies of religion and religiosities. The Department welcomes research proposals that attends to the transformative aspects of religion, and which itself also may be subject to transformation.

The PhD Student will be included in a research project funded by FORTE (ID no 2021-01970), Liveability at the crossroad of religion, gender and sexuality. An ethnographic study of religious and social barriers encountered by LGBTQ+ people across diverse traditions of faith.

The aim of this project is to examine the religious and social barriers encountered by LGBTQ+ people of faith across Muslim, Jewish, Catholic and Sami religious traditions in Sweden. The purpose of the project is to illuminate the effects of internalized lgbtq+ negativity and heteronormativity and identify what makes, and could make, spaces livable for LGBTQ+ people of faith.

We are now inviting applications for 1 position as PhD-student, appointed to conduct research within the project, individually as well as in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI). We seek to recruit a PhD-candidate with a motivation to conduct high quality research and with previous knowledge of Muslim, Jewish, Sami and/or Catholic communities in Sweden and an interest in gender and queer studies.

Assessment criteria:

Only applicants who are eligible for third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

Admission is primarily to be based on the applicant’s ability to benefit from the third cycle programme.  

The applicants will be ranked based on an overall assessment of the quality and originality of their submitted papers and research plan, and their personal suitability. As third cycle studies in Sociology are very demanding, the applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently under time constraints. Good collaboration and communication skills are also required, as is proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Interviews will be conducted with a shortlisted number of applicants during the final stages of the admission process. The applicants may be asked to provide work samples also after the application has been submitted.

• A research plan of a maximum of 13000 characters with spaces, including references, in Swedish or English.

Please note that a plan not following these formal requirements means that the application will not be assessed.

• A work sample consisting of some free reflections over a scientific article. Choose for instance one of these two classic articles: Robert K. Merton’s (1948) “The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy” (The Antioch Review 8: 2: 193-210) or Dorothy E. Smiths (1978) “’K is Mentally Ill’. The Anatomy of a Factual Account” (Sociology 12: 1: 23-53).

You can also choose any other scientific article in sociology, new or old. Reflect on for instance these questions:

1) What do you see as the author’s main points?

2) How would you exemplify the reasoning in the article on your own?

3) Which strengths and weaknesses do you find in the article?

The text should be maximum 1500 words and can be written in English, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.

• Other documentation of relevance to the position.
