Introduction
PhD studies consist of research programmes at the highest international level that qualify students for independent research, knowledge dissemination and teaching. The main emphasis is on PhD students organising and conducting their own research project (under supervision). The programme culminates in the submission of a PhD thesis, which the student must defend in public. The programme is prescribed to 180 ECTS credits, corresponding to three years of full-time study.

A PhD degree opens up a range of career opportunities in academia and elsewhere. As well as writing a thesis, PhD students work in active research environments in Denmark and abroad. They contribute to the academic environment, take research training courses, and convey the results of their research in teaching, at academic conferences and to the general public.

PhD fellowship in Molecular Biophysics

We invite applications for two PhD student positions.

One position is with research focus on the exploration of biomembrane shape using computer simulations. The project is part of the research project “Unraveling Conformations of High-genus Membranes”, which is financed by Novo Nordisk Fonden.

The other position is where the research aim to use different computer simulations to understand how the shape of mitochondrial membranes emerges. The project is part of a research project entitled “Coupling Architectures of the Cellular Powerhouse to Energy Production States”, which is financed by Sapere Aude: DFF-Forskningsleder.

Start date is (expected to be) first of September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project “Unraveling Conformations of High-genus Membranes
Our goal is to use and expand a multiscale simulation scheme to characterize the shape of high-genus membranes.
Biomembranes are fundamental to our understanding of the cell, the basic building block of all life. An intriguing aspect of membranes is their ability to assume a variety of shapes, which is crucial for cell function. The shape of fluid lipid membranes with spherical topology has been extensively explored. However, our understanding of membranes of higher genera remains extremely limited. High-genus membranes are of interest for several reasons, for example (i) organelle membranes, such as the ones found in mitochondria and Golgi apparatus exhibit high-genus shapes, and (ii) these structures allow for a much wider range of membrane conformations, which enables a better design of biomimetic systems.

The project “Coupling Architectures of the Cellular Powerhouse to Energy Production States
The inner membrane of mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, is highly folded, exhibiting intricate dynamical structures called cristae that are integral to a multitude of cellular processes, in particular bioenergetic demand. Abnormal cristae architectures are associated with many diseases, such as liver dysfunction. However, it remains obscure how exactly the crista shapes emerge and are connected to molecular activities. The goal of this project is to use multiscale computer simulation to understand how the activities and cooperativity of key molecular players shape crista membranes.

Who are we looking for?
The candidates should have a background in physics, chemistry, biology, bioinformatic, or related fields. It is considered a strength to have knowledge of (one or more of) biomolecular modeling, computer simulations, computer programming, statistical mechanics, linear algebra and/or differential geometry.

PhD Project in methodology for high-throughput toxicophenomic

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Crop Science invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in high-throughput statistical modelling of toxic effects assessed by plant phenotyping. The project is part of the research project “Enhancing statistical methodology for toxicophenomics: High-throughput and high-dimensional data for ecotoxicological risk assessment”, which is financed by the Novo Nordic Foundation.

Start date is (expected to be) May 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project
High-throughput plant phenotyping keeps proving its potential in different areas of crop science and plant breeding and has recently been been suggested as a future means for use in advanced environmental toxicological risk assessment, i.e., as toxicophenomics.  The main aim of environmental risk assessment is to assign magnitudes and probabilities to adverse effects of human impact. A key parameter used in chemical risk assessment is the benchmark dose (BMD), identifying the dose associated with a predefined deviation from non-treated controls in the test system investigated. The BMD methodology relies on non-linear dose-response models and the methodology is well-established for univariate data, such as growth or mortility measured at a single point in time. Dose-response analysis is increasingly being used in omics for large-scale toxicity testing of many markers in one go but the extension to the more complex BMD methodology is lacking.

The primary focus of the PhD project will be on developing the next generation high-throughput BMD methodology for toxicophenomics. Specifically, the aim will be to develop infrastructure for large-scale BMD analysis that may be integrated with tools for pre- and post-processing to achieve a powerful modular toolbox, that can handle different data types and non-standard cases. The data will include phenotyping data in terms of different plant growth parameters, plant physiological measurements and image-based measurements including multispectral and fluorescence measurements. Exploration and validation of the developed methodology to real experimental data is an important aspect of the project.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a candidate with strong competences within the field(s) of statistics or bioinformatics. Applicants can have a background in statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics, data science or environmental  toxicology with flair and interest in statistics and data science. The applicant should also be prepared to do some experimental work to produce own data.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The successful applicant will be part of the biostatics group at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. We are a part of the crop science section and work closely together with reasearchers across the section and departments on applied statistics within agronomy, eco-toxicology and phenotyping. The crop science section studies and teaches basic and applied sciences related to crop production, with a focus on the interaction between Genotype, Management and Environment. The aim of the crop science section is to improve land management for sustainable food production in a changing climate, by conducting research in laboratories, greenhouses, semi-field and fields. The biostatistics group also works closely together with the environmental toxicology group https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/env_chem_phys/et/  and the analytical chemistry group https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/env_chem_phys/.  These groups focus on the effects of chemical pollutants on individual organisms, populations and ecosystems. Combined, our research projects are closely connected to national and international plant breeders, the agricultural industry, and Danish and European regulatory authorities concerned with the risk assessment of pesticides and industrial chemicals.

The biostatics group is a part of Department of Plant and Environmetal Science, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Taastrup, Copenhagen.

We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment.

PhD scholarship at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)/ /ERC RITUAL DETERRENCE

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Political Science. Enrolment will be at the Faculty of Social Sciences under Copenhagen Graduate School of Social Sciences. The position is part of the European Research Council Consolidator Grant project “Ritual Action: Making Deterrence Matter in International Security and Memory Politics” (RITUAL DETERRENCE; PI: Dr Maria Mälksoo).

The position starting date is on 1 September 2023.

Introduction
The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training which opens up a window of opportunity to a variety of careers within the private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching, and other forms of knowledge dissemination. The PhD is to be undertaken as a three-year full-time study within the framework of the 5+3 study programme.

RITUAL DETERRENCE project explores the role of ritual action in making deterrence effective and credible in international security politics between NATO and the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War and in various contemporary contexts (NATO-Russia, US-Russia, US-China relations). The project combines a variety of qualitative methods (participant observation, interviews, discourse analysis), generating new knowledge about how deterrence is made to matter in international politics, and what deterrence does politically for the communities that practice it. We work at the intersection of International Relations, Critical Security Studies, Social Theory and Anthropology with an aim to offer a novel framework for the study of deterrence in military, political-diplomatic and legislative conflict management contexts through a range contemporary and historical case studies. The PhD scholar will contribute to the project by theorizing and analyzing the Russian understandings of deterrence (with a preferred emphasis on cyber and hybrid deterrence) and the US-Russia deterrence politics in the post-2014 era.
