Senior Lecturer in Astronomy, orientated towards Galactic Dynamics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Job description
The position entails primarily research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research will be conducted at least 60 % of full time. The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research, teaching, and administration may change over time. The person is expected to develop active research within the area and related areas, which also includes active work in applying for external funding and developing collaborations with other university units and other governmental organizations involved in this type of research.

Research at Lund Observatory is focused on how the Milky Way formed, evolved and on its current structure. These are central issues in modern astrophysics. Lund Observatory has played a key role in developing the field of space astrometry, firstly, with the HIPPARCOS mission launch in 1989, and later with the Gaia mission, launched in 2013. Gaia is still collecting data today and is creating a revolution in Galactic astronomy based on its catalogue of almost 2 billion stars. Lund Observatory is now embarking on a new project to expand on the success of Gaia by leading proposals for a new space mission, called GaiaNIR. This proposal will widen the wavelength range to the near-infrared to also explore regions of our Galaxy which is hidden by dust and gas.

The lecturer’s research is expected to focus on Galactic Dynamics exploiting the Gaia data to study the dynamical history and future evolution of stellar populations in our Galaxy. Additionally, the lecturer is expected to provide theoretical, statistical, and simulation expertise in the development of the work towards the next generation space astrometry observatory. This work requires new science cases based on the opportunities provided by near-infrared astrometry.

The lecturer is expected to teach in courses at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level, especially within the research area, but also at a more basic level. The new lecturer is expected to be responsible for handling the bachelor theses at the astronomy unit.

Eligibility
Those qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are a person who has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve (according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

For this position the qualified applicants must have a doctorate within the field of astronomy and astrophysics or another field of relevance to the position. It is a requirement to have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In certain cases exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of assessment
The applicant must show a well-documented scientific background of research in developing and applying dynamical models of the Milky Way.

Experience of developing Galactic potentials and their use for Bayesian analysis of observational and theoretical data is required as is working with large-scale observational data. Applicants must have strong experience working within Gaia data processing or equivalent. Today, research and postgraduate studies largely depend on the ability and competence of the individual researcher to obtain external funding. Hence, a proven capability to obtain external research grants as project-PI in national or international competition from research councils is a requirement. Very good written and oral knowledge of English is a requirement.

In-depth knowledge of Galactic dynamics and the use of angle-action coordinates is a merit as is experience and involvement in one or more of the following projects: The Gaia mission; 4MOST; RAVE; GaiaNIR; or other relevant ground or space-based surveys.

The applicant should describe their current research themes and present a research plan for the next few years, and how to contribute to the research at the department. Scientific qualifications will be evaluated mainly based on quality, number of peer-reviewed scientific publications, and the research plan.

Ability to supervise a PhD student as main supervisor at the onset of the employment is a requirement. Documented experience of and excellence in teaching and development of new course curricula, at basic as well as advanced (including postgraduate) levels within the applicants´ own and adjacent fields and in particular in statistical methods for astrophysics, are merits. Documented experience as main course responsible is a merit. Documented experience of supervision of Bachelor, Masters, and PhD students is also a merit as is experience of coordinating students’ thesis in astronomy.

Equal attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. The applicants shall present an educational portfolio and describe how they can contribute to the teaching in astronomy at the department.

Management skills and administrative skills are merits. Ability to create commitment, participation and job satisfaction are examples of demonstrated skill.

Documented experience in communicating science, and the societal values of research, are important merits.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.

Professor of Mission Studies with Ecumenics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

On the subject and the content of the position

The Centre for Theology and Religious Studies (CTR) has existed since the University’s foundation in 1668, albeit under different names. CTR offers courses in specialist areas such as the history of religions and religious behaviour science, Old and New Testament exegesis, church history, mission studies, theology and ethics. Research is conducted in all the disciplines of religious studies and theology.

CTR is part of Lund University’s wider vision to be a role model for how future knowledge is created and communicated. Similarly, CTR aims to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition through education, research and external engagement. Specifically, CTR’s goal is to use education and research to develop and impart knowledge and analytical skills about religious phenomena from the past and present in the pursuit of a fair and well-functioning society.

The professorship in mission studies with ecumenics has been made possible through several donations from the Lund Missionssällskap (LMS) to Lund University over the years.

The professorship in mission studies with ecumenics covers a broad area of research and teaching in current, historical and theological aspects of mission studies, including ecumenics with a focus on religious dialogue and theology of religion. Particular emphasis is placed on the applicant’s qualifications regarding historical and contemporary encounters between different religions and the dialogue between them, both in a European context and on other continents. The professor is also responsible for third-cycle education in global Christianity and interreligious relations.

Mission studies with ecumenics acts as an important bridge between several different disciplines at the centre, therefore CTR is looking for a professor in mission studies with ecumenics who, through their teaching and research, can connect to and become an important interlocutor for researchers and teaching staff in e.g. Islamic studies, Jewish studies, church history and systematic theology.

Duties

  • Be responsible for the development of teaching, third-cycle education and research within the subject of mission studies with ecumenics. This includes: (1) own research, (2) research initiation and management, including the preparation of applications for external funding, (3) management of the research seminar and supervision of doctoral students, (4) teaching and course development at all levels, and (5) administrative tasks.
  • The professor will also collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines at CTR and especially with colleagues in church history and practical theology in the field of church and mission studies, actively contribute to the internationalisation of teaching and research at CTR, and be able to take on academic leadership assignments when necessary.

It is important that the appointed professor becomes an active presence in the centre’s environment and participates in the centre’s collective activities. Mission studies with ecumenics is an international subject, however, which means travel is also part of the role.

Required qualifications

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor. For appointment as a professor there is a requirement for training in teaching and learning in higher education amounting to at least five weeks or that equivalent knowledge has been acquired in some other way.

Further requirements for appointment are:

  • A PhD or equivalent research expertise or other professional expertise of relevance to the subject matter and the duties of the position.
  • The ability to be able to teach in English is essential. If the new employee does not have sufficient command of Swedish/another Scandinavian language for teaching and communication in the workplace, a professional development plan will be devised that specifies how the employee shall acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in Swedish within a specified time frame. This plan will be drawn up in consultation between the employee and their immediate manager.

Professor of History with specialisation in International and Global History

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Workplace description/subject area

The history division within the Department of History offers freestanding courses alongside Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, the latter of which is offered together with the history of ideas and sciences. Our third-cycle education is well-developed, and the National Graduate School of Historical Studies, set up twenty years ago, forms the hub.

Global and international history is a wide research field with several different specialisations that encapsulate historical phenomena, processes and relationships over national and regional borders. This may include, for example, analyses of flows, exchanges and connections, but also resistance, conflict and disintegration, and comparisons across time and space. The field covers a broad chronology from the Middle Ages up to the present day and can include macro and microhistorical perspectives.

International and global history has been a prominent part of the environment at Lund University since the 1970s, with several renowned professors at the forefront. At the moment we also have two Wallenberg Academy Fellows projects with an international focus, an incoming Pro Futura Scientia researcher specialising in global history, and many doctoral students and researchers whose research topics are international and global in scope.

Work duties

The holder of the position will act as a research leader primarily by running research projects, initiating and supporting applications for external funding, developing seminar activities and attracting national and international researchers to the international and global history research environment in particular and to the Department of History in general. The applicant will contribute to the development of the department’s network of research contacts in the subject both nationally and internationally, develop contacts with wider society, supervise doctoral students and act as a mentor for younger researchers.

The holder of the professorship is expected to lead and develop the teaching of international and global history with different theoretical, temporal and spatial perspectives and at all levels of the Bachelor’s programme in history, the secondary school subject teacher training in history, the Master’s programme in historical studies, as well as freestanding and online courses.

The candidate is expected to have a positive attitude towards taking on advanced management duties in the department.

The position requires the professor to be present and active in the department.

Required qualifications

  • The Department of History puts special emphasis on a positive work environment, and the professor is expected to actively participate in the activities of the department. Documented ability in collaboration, networking and external engagement is therefore a requirement.
  • The ability to teach in English from the first day of taking up the position is a requirement. Applicants who do not have sufficient command of Swedish, the official language of the Swedish public sector, to communicate will need to draw up a specific plan together with the department on how they will acquire these language skills. The holder of the position is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment.

If the appointee has less than 10 weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education and/or no training in teaching and learning in higher education in supervising doctoral students, it is expected that such training will be completed during the first two years of employment.

A good general ability to lead and develop activities is demonstrated by a proven track record of leading, coordinating and developing research activities and collaborating with others, successfully and with clear results.

Specific qualifications of additional merit:

  • Proven strong ability to initiate, coordinate and lead extensive externally funded research projects involving national and/or international collaborations

The scope of the applicant’s research, in terms of both depth and breadth, is considered to be of particular importance. Equal amounts of attention will be given to the assessment of teaching expertise and to the assessment of research expertise, irrespective of the weighting of these.
