Three PhD student positions in Geometry Assurance

 Do you want to become a PhD in a stimulating research environment, accelerate the transformation towards a more resource efficient and sustainable industry, and become a part of the global research community? We will now extending our research team with three PhD students in the area of simulation and geometry assurance. The successful candidates should be willing to participate in the courses given by the department in the mechanical engineering program. We search for independent and creative persons capable of planning and carrying out own research.


Information about the research group
The Geometry Assurance & Robust Design Group, at the department of Industrial and Materials Sciences (IMS) and Wingquist Laboratory, conducts research on assembly modelling and analysis, robust design, variation simulation, tolerance optimization, heat transfer and use of inspection data for product and process control. The group consists of five senior researchers and 10-15 postdocs and PhD students. The research group has over the last decade produced a number of scientific results that have been transferred into commercial software products, today used in daily operation by a large number of engineers at several international companies. The research group has a large industrial network.

Major responsibilities
The three PhD candidate positions are focusing on:

AM-based remanufacturing: The focus of this project is to further develop a novel method for efficient and accurate simulation of additive manufacuring (AM) processes, drastically reducing calculation times compared to today’s high-fidelity FE-based methods. The method will be implemented in an existing simulation platform, developed by the research group and partly in use by industrial partners. The method will be used in a digital twin context together with the real AM equipment. The results will be physically verified on industrial test cases together with our industrial partners.

Geometry assurance for Megacasting: The focus of this project is to identify sources of variation, develop methods for simulation of geometrical deviation, and propose a geometry assurance process for megacasted products. The method will be implemented in an existing simulation platform, developed by the research group and partly in use by industrial partners.

Geometry assurance for Battery Production: The focus of this project is to identify sources of variation, develop methods for simulation of geometrical deviation, and propose a geometry assurance process for battery design and manufacture. The method will be implemented in an existing simulation platform, developed by the research group and partly in use by industrial partners.

The research will be conducted and verified together with our industrial partners.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a Master degree in engineering or mathematics, preferably with courses in FEA analysis and thermo-mechanical modelling. You need to be fluent in English and be able to produce high-quality written documents.
If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms

PhD student position in Doping of Conjugated Polymers for Wearable Electronics

 A PhD student position is available in the research group of Christian Müller at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Chalmers University of Technology. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who will develop new materials for wearable electronics. Your project will be part of the ERC funded project "Electrical Modulation of Elastic Moduli" (Elmo).


Project description
The Müller Research Group focuses on the physical chemistry and materials science of organic semiconductors, polymer blends and composites, and develops new plastic materials for wearable electronics and energy technologies ranging from solar cells and thermoelectrics to power cables. All research is conducted in co-operation with other universities/institutes and/or industry. Presently, the group consists of 1 Professor, 1 senior scientist, 3 Postdocs and 8 PhD students.

Molecular doping is widely used to modify the electrical properties of conjugated polymers, necessary for a wide range of applications ranging from organic solar cells and thermoelectrics to wearable electronics. The goal of your research will be to understand how molecular doping influences the mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. You will then use the knowledge gained to develop conducting materials and fibers and use those for the fabrication of electronic textile devices. You will work closely with several PhD students and postdocs at Chalmers as well as other universities in Sweden and abroad. There will be the opportunity to travel and visit labs of external collaborators.

Major responsibilities
The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research, in collaboration with PhD students and postdocs at Chalmers as well as other universities in Sweden and abroad. As a PhD student you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in writing. In addition, 10 percent of your time will be dedicated to departmental duties, especially teaching on the undergraduate level.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or equivalent (or be in the process of completing a Master’s degree). Experience with polymer science and organic electronics is required; experience with molecular doping is a merit. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills. A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing is required.

PhD student position in New Materials Concepts for Stable Organic Solar Cells

 A PhD student position is available in the research group of Christian Müller at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Chalmers University of Technology. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who will develop new material concepts for organic solar cells. Your project will be part of a project funded by the Swedish Research Council. The development of new acceptor materials for organic solar cells has led to a steady increase in device efficiencies, reaching more than 17% today. A remaining challenge is the relatively poor long-term stability of organic solar cells. The goal of your research will be to understand how the use of mixtures of acceptor molecules influences and improves the stability of organic solar cells. 

Major responsibilities

PhD position in History of Technology and Industry

 The Division of Science, Technology and Society (STS) at Chalmers University of Technology, will hire a PhD student in History of Technology, with a specialisation in industrial transformation in the 20th Century. Applicants are invited to propose their own research project within this specialisation. Relevant educational degrees might be in history, political sciences, sociology or engineering. Meritorious qualifications for applicants with a MSc (Science or Engineering) degree are a Master's thesis on a historically themed topic and experience in working with qualitative methods.

PhD student position in fluid mechanics of turbulent clouds

 Climate change is a socio-economic challenge, and climate simulations are the only tool to predict our planet's future climate. Clouds are crucial for weather and climate predictions. According to the IPCC, cloud modelling is one of the least understood domains in climate sciences and is “listed as one of the most urgent problems requiring scientific attention”. Clouds are considered the largest source of uncertainty in climate predictions because it is complicated to accurately model the small-scale process (microphysics) inside clouds occurring in a range from meters to nanometers in a global climate model where the resolution is of the order of Kilometers. This project will address this challenge by using novel multiscale techniques developed for general multiphase flows that allow us to accurately solve the small-scale cloud turbulence and its impact on nucleation, evaporation and collisions of cloud droplets.


Project description
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Science at Chalmers University is offering a doctoral position to investigate, quantify, and model the impact of turbulence on the dynamics of water droplets/aerosols inside warm ice-free clouds. The methodology combines different numerical techniques including Direct (DNS) and Large-Eddy (LES) Simulations, together with stochastic models to predict the water droplet number and size spectra inside clouds and the mechanics of rain formation. The aim is to measure the main microphysical processes that determine, in combination with turbulence, the cloud droplet sizes: nucleation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), growth by condensation of water vapor, growth by collisions/coalescence induced by turbulence and gravity. The project is highly interdisciplinary and involves interactions and collaborations with statistics and atmospheric physicists.

Information about the division and the department
The position will be open at the Fluid Dynamic division of Mechanical and Maritime Science department. The research at the Division covers turbulent flow (both compressible and incompressible), multiphase flows, aero-acoustics and turbomachines. Our tools include both computations and experiments. The research covers a wide range of topics. In some research projects the smallest turbulent scales are studied whereas in others the function of a complete gas turbine is analyzed and modelled. The Division of Fluid Dynamics is part of Chalmers Sustainable Transport Initiative, Chalmers eScience Initiative and Chalmers Energy Initiative.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, you will be central to the development of the project, and also be responsible for the implementation, validation and data analysis of the numerical tools.

You are expected to learn to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. Your research activities will contribute to enhanced knowledge in the scientific field, in particular by presenting your results in scientific journals and at international conferences.

The position also includes teaching courses within Chalmers' undergraduate level corresponding to up to 20 percent of the working hours

PhD project in computational systems medicine of complex diseases

 The Polster lab at Chalmers SysBio is advertising a 4-year PhD position in computational medicine. The fellow will work in a highly dynamic research environment at the interface of medicine and data science. This is an exciting opportunity obtain and extensive skillset in data-driven in-silico research and focus on an important topic: Personalized and precision medicine in complex diseases. The fellow will be expected to independently develop new ideas and drive collaborations.

The project will offer training in a wide range of front-line computational medicine methods, and access to a variety of courses in the research school. Thus, this PhD fellowship will prepare for a range of academic, private and public sector job opportunities.

Information about the project and the division
The doctoral fellow will be expected to work on patient profiling and subgroup identification based on clinical and 'omics datasets. The aim of the project is to identify endotypes or biosignatures that are linked to differences in disease characteristics and trajectory.

The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at the Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world leading research groups in systems biology of metabolism. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from understanding the fundamental operational principles of metabolism and studies of metabolic diseases, to highly applied research directed towards development of new cell factories for the production of valuable chemicals.

Major responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated individual, driven by scientific curiosity and capable to quickly learn interdisciplinary skills. PhD position in Privacy Preserving and Accountable Decentralized Protocols

The Computer Science Department seeks to conduct research and education that are both foundational and have impact on industry and society.

Job description
In this project, we will investigate new techniques for constructing privacy preserving smart contracts that do not leak user data on the blockchain but still allow for public verification of their executions. While anonymous cryptocurrency systems such as Zcash solve the privacy issues of most current systems, they irrevocably hide all user activities, making it impossible to investigate illegal activities conducted in the system. Aiming at constructing regulation compliant protocols, we will investigate techniques for lawful auditing of user activities in privacy preserving blockchain applications.

The research in this project will focus on employing techniques from the areas of secure multiparty computation, zero knowledge and anonymous credentials to construct privacy preserving yet auditable cryptographic protocols for decentralized applications. More specifically, we will use these techniques to design and analyze provably secure multiparty computation with auditability guarantees and efficient integration with smart contract and cryptocurrency systems. We will also focus on improving the efficiency of such protocols aiming at practical applications.

The successful applicant should have a strong background in computer science or mathematics, with a focus on complexity theory, number theory, algebra and probability theory. Previous research experience in security and cryptography (specially in cryptographic protocols) is most welcome. Moreover, the successful candidate should be motivated and enthusiastic about theoretical research in cryptography.

General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

PhD of International Studies

 A Single, Green Market for Capital? A critical political economy perspective on the completion of the Capital Markets Union

The Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, Denmark, invites applications for a position as PhD of International Studies from 1 March 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a double degree in collaboration with the Political Science Department of the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

The overall period for the project is limited to three years. During the first 18 months, the candidate will be based at Radboud University and during the last 18 months of the project at Roskilde University. Physical presence at the respective university during this period is mandatory. That means that the PhD position involves moving from the Netherlands to Denmark in 2024 (the moving costs will be partially covered by the universities).

If the PhD process lives up to the requirements at the two universities, you will be awarded with a degree from each of the universities (a double degree).

Description of the PhD project

The financial system of the EU has gone through a turbulent time since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This gave renewed impetus and opportunity for the European Commission to accelerate the larger plan to unite capital markets in Europe through the Capital Markets Union (CMU).

The CMU stands at a crucial conjuncture of European market integration; as an institutional process, it is marked by the fundamental fault lines between financial market liberalization and attempts to regulate the sector, while at the same time ensuring a transition that is green and inclusive. These developments are set in a broader context of far-reaching structural changes and geopolitical rivalries in the global economy more generally, and the changing role of banks vis-a-vis other financial sector agents in the provision of credit and/or equity in particular. Possible focal points include, for instance: the financing of the European Green Deal; the link between CMU and industrial policy; the role of financial markets actors, business actors and civil society in the CMU process.  

Explaining the politics that inform the CMU relaunch provides an important building block for understanding the EU’s attempts to unlock investments against the backdrop of the unfolding integration trajectory of the European political economy.

Applicants are invited to send in a project description addressing these processes, with a clear focus on the political economy of European integration. We encourage applicants from a wide range of approaches and perspectives.

Your project description shall be no more than four pages, excluding a bibliography. Responsibilities and tasks

As a PhD fellow you are trained at an international level to undertake research and teaching assignments. You are responsible for carrying out independent research under supervision and receive constructive feedback in the PhD program in order to finish your PhD thesis. During your employment you are required to take 30 ECTS of course work, and gain experience of teaching activities.
