PhD student position in Hybrid Quantum Systems


In the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory, we will develop nanofabricated devices to create interfaces between cold atoms, light and motion. We will use these devices to create next-generation sensors and new quantum technologies. Project description
The Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory at Chalmers is a new laboratory at Chalmers that will exploit the exquisite control over light enabled by photonics. Nanofabrication of photonic integated circuits and mechanical oscillators with ultralow loss is at the heart of our research. Cold atoms are the third ingredient, and we will use the tools of atomic physics to cool and trap atoms and couple their quantum states to light and mechanical motion. The hybrid quantum systems we create will have both unexplored physics and practical applications.


Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, your main focus will be on conducting research and developing your own scientific concepts and skills - both technical and transferable - and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will work as a part of a team and will be expected to collaborate effectively with a diverse and international group. As one of the first PhD students in the group, you will play a large role in the design, construction and operation of new and complex experiments, which means you will learn all the skills necessary to lead a research project.

The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Qualifications
A masters degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Photonics or Electrical Engineering is required. Experience with experimental atomic physics, optics, photonics, nanomagnetism, nanofabrication, nanomechanics or cryogenics is beneficial. PhD in Strain tuning of HTS thin films for clean energy

Information about the project
In cuprate High critical temperature superconductors (HTS) the superconductive phenomenon emerges from a metallic state, named “strange metal”, with properties that cannot be accounted for by conventional condensed matter theories. The highest superconductive temperature in HTS corresponds to the region of doping where the strange metal phase is most robust. It is believed that the route towards room temperature superconductivity goes through the understanding of the physics principles governing the strange metal phase, still unkown.

Our group has recently achieved research breakthroughs by using the strain induced by the substrate to tune the properties of the strange metal phase and of the superconductive state. The focus of the PHD position will be to go beyond conventional strain modification by patterning periodic nanostructures on the surface of the substrate. Nm thick films of HTS superconductors will be strongly affected by the superstructure which will change the ground state, possibly giving hints on how to increase the superconducting critical temperature towards room temperature.

Within this project, the student will lead this new experimental approach which will involve nanostructuring of substrates, thin film deposition and transport properties of nanoscale devices. We have a strong consortium consisting of expertise in superconducting materials (Chalmers), which can benefit from the theoretical support of various national (KTH, Uppsala, Chalmers) and international collaborations. The research is conducted at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience – MC2. MC2 is a unique research department in the areas of micro- and nano-technology, housing more than 200 employees and PhD students. The research focus at MC2 is future nano- and quantum electronics, high speed electronics and photonics, and bio- and nano-systems.

All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School, an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.

PhD student position in New Materials Concepts for Stable Organic Solar Cells

A PhD student position is available in the research group of Christian Müller at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Chalmers University of Technology. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who will develop new material concepts for organic solar cells. Your project will be funded by the Swedish Research Council. You will work closely with several PhD students and postdocs at Chalmers as well as other universities in Sweden and abroad. There will be the opportunity to travel to attend conferences and to visit labs at other universities.

Information about the Research Group and the project
The Müller Research Group focuses on the physical chemistry and materials science of organic semiconductors, polymer blends and composites, and develops new plastic materials for wearable electronics and energy technologies ranging from organic solar cells and thermoelectrics to power cables. All research is conducted in co-operation with other universities/institutes and/or industry. Presently, the group consists of 1 Professor, 1 senior scientist, 3 Postdocs and 8 PhD students.

The development of new acceptor materials for organic solar cells has led to a steady increase in device efficiencies, reaching more than 17% today. A remaining challenge is the relatively poor long-term stability of organic solar cells. The goal of your research will be to understand how the use of mixtures of acceptor molecules influences and improves the stability of organic solar cells. 

Major responsibilities
The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research, in collaboration with students and postdocs at Chalmers as well as other universities in Sweden and abroad. As a PhD student you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in writing. In addition, 10 percent of your time will be dedicated to departmental duties, especially teaching on the undergraduate level.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or equivalent (or be in the process of completing a Master’s degree). Experience with organic electronics is required; experience with organic solar cells is a merit. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills.

A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing is required. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 4 years of fulltime research studies. The monthly salary of a PhD student at Chalmers is about 32'000 SEK before tax (approx. 2'700 €).

PhD student position in Materials Chemistry for Stable Organic Electronics

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the project “Stable Doping of Organic Semiconductors”, supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The project brings together 5 research groups from Chalmers University of Technology and Linköping University, led by Christian Müller, Anna Martinelli, Eva Olsson, Mats Fahlman and Simone Fabiano. The mission of the project is the realization of doped organic semiconductors that display truly stable electronic behaviour. You will be part of a team of five PhD students, as well as several Postdocs, who will together develop and study new materials concepts that facilitate stable doping. You will have the opportunity to visit and collaborate with different research labs both in Sweden and abroad.

Project description
Doping is essential for the optimization of the electronic performance of organic semiconductors, and as such essential for a wide range of emerging technologies from sustainable energy harvesting via organic photovoltaics and thermoelectrics to wearable electronics and bioelectronics. The doping process involves a chemical or electrochemical reaction that allows to tune the electrical and electronic properties of an organic semiconductor. The resulting doped state, however, is prone to evolve with time, which limits the lifetime of electronic devices.

The project will leverage concepts from the field of molecular glasses to realize stable organic semiconductors and devices. Your specific project will entail a detailed study of the phase behaviour and glass formation of dopant/semiconductor pairs, using a suite of characterization methods from thermal and mechanical analysis to optical spectroscopy and various scattering techniques.

It can be anticipated that the project will have considerable impact on the field of organic electronics by enabling the more widespread usage of some of the most promising materials, which will accelerate further development of many emerging technologies.

PhD student position in biomimetic flight

The research group of Dr. Arion Pons at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences is delighted to announce a funded PhD student position in the topic of biomimetic flight. This PhD position offers you the opportunity:

Information about the division and the department
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences is highly diverse, with close links to the automotive, aerospace and maritime industry in Gothenburg. Among a range of fundamental and applied research in these areas, we have a strong focus on novel and sustainable aviation technologies. You will be joining an emerging research group, led by Dr. Arion Pons in the Division of Fluid Dynamics, and will have the opportunity to contribute to a pioneering new focus on biomimetic flight within the department.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, your primary role will be performing and publishing scientific and engineering research. Research areas may include engineering design of biomimetic MAVs; dynamics of vibrational propulsion systems; and biomechanics of biological flight systems. Theoretical analyses, mechanical design, and experimental testing may be involved, and it is anticipated that the line of research will be interdisciplinary, combining biomechanical and engineering studies. You will be guided by senior researchers in the department, and will be expected to communicate the results of your research at leading conferences and in international journals. A secondary role involves teaching or other departmental duties corresponding to 20% of your time.

Qualifications
To be qualified for the position, you should have a master’s degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant subject – this includes mechanical engineering, mechatronics, biomechanics, physics, and others. Outstanding candidates with only a bachelor’s degree with honours will be considered. We are particularly interested in curious and creative candidates:
› with a mix of theoretical and practical skills in UAVs, dynamics and vibration, flight mechanics, engineering design, and/or biomechanics;
› with experience in interdisciplinary research, particularly the interface between biology and engineering;
› with excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
› and, with demonstrated ability to contribute to the positive and inclusive outlook of the research group.

PhD student position in experimental superconducting qubit readout


We invite applications for several PhD positions in experimental quantum computing with superconducting circuits. You will work in the stimulating research environment of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology. The core project of the centre is to build a quantum computer based on superconducting circuits.


You will be part of the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) within the department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), working in a large team of PhDs, postdocs and researchers. MC2 hosts a state-of-the-art nanofabrication facility and as a member of QTL you will have access to measurement laboratories for superconducting quantum devices.

We are seeking PhD students to work on building the next generation of large-scale quantum processors based on superconducting circuits. To achieve this ambitiuous goal, we have a variety of projects related to:
• Readout optimization for large-scale quantum processors
• Simulation, design and characterization of traveling-wave parametric amplifiers
• Development and optimization of nano-fabrication recipes for superconducting devices

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, or equivalent, obtained no more than two years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

PhD position in Inverse design of nanoresonators for quantum optomechanics

The Department of Physics at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a PhD position targeting inverse design for optimizing the mechanical and optical performance of nanomechanical resonators for use in quantum optomechanics. This research is part of a larger project (2023-2028) aimed at realizing optomechanical systems reaching deep into the quantum regime. You will be part of a newly formed team of PhD students and postdocs in local theoretical and experimental groups working towards a common goal. For this PhD project, we seek a candidate with an interest in theory and computation. We are looking for someone who wishes to work theoretically in the field of optomechanics, while still maintaining close contact with experiments.

Project description
Quantum optomechanics is a vibrant field spanning multiple physics disciplines. This PhD project focuses on implementing advanced inverse design methods, utilizing artificial neural networks, to optimize mechanical performance while maintaining a high optomechanical coupling. Your focus will initially be on designing structures that minimize dissipative contributions. The research will be carried out together with researchers in the division working on inverse design for improving the optomechanical coupling. The second stage of the project aims to integrate the two approaches into a single framework.

The PhD project is one of several within the recently funded 5-year Wallenberg project "Light strongly interacting with mechanical motion: Nonlinear quantum optomechanics with photonic crystal-based nanomechanical resonators", and the designs will be fabricated and tested by experimental groups at Chalmers. You will be embedded in the Condensed Matter and Materials Theory division, a research group tackling questions ranging from nanomechanics to optics and quantum physics. Chalmers University of Technology is a leading research institution in nanoscience and hosts one of Europe's largest and most well-equipped clean rooms dedicated to nanofabrication, as well as state-of-the-art high-performance computing equipment.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. This includes developing scientific concepts and communicating research results both verbally and in writing. In addition to the research project, you will also take graduate courses within the graduate school of Physics. Most of your time will be devoted to your own research and competence development, but you may also be involved in teaching and other departmental duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.

Qualifications

PhD student in diagnostics of PEM based devices: fuel cells and electrolysers


The successful candidate will take a key role in advancing the knowledge of operation of PEM based devices, with focus on the factors that may limit their performance. The exciting aspect of this project is being part of the bigger context of the competence center SESBC (Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Center), which involves many non-academic partners and a number of other PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Interactions with these people and the access to a large diversity of competences makes this PhD position rather unique.


Information about the research
PEM fuel cells and electrolysers are attracting vast attention due to the key role that they can play in the decarbonization of many important sectors, such as industry, transport and heating. It is also expected that PEM fuel cells (and electrolysers) will be integrated into microgrids together with other renewable energy source with the purpose to enable a better balanced and flexible electricity supply. In this context, challenges are related to finding the optimal operational conditions, to understanding the best hybridization concepts and to identify the factors that limit the devices' performance. In this project, we propose to use and develop experimental methods such as vibrational spectroscopy (primarily Raman spectroscopy), optical microscopy (SEM and TEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to diagnostic the operation of PEM devices and the degradation mechanisms of their components.

The project will be performed at the departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers, in close collaboration with a postdoc to be recruited, and is part of the bigger context of the competence center SESBC.

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the largest departments at Chalmers. We represent a broad field of fundamental and applied research and education within chemistry and chemical engineering. The PhD candidate will investigate fuel cell/electrolyser components as-prepared and post-use and, to the extent that it is possible, in-situ; analyzing the chemical stability of the PEM, the physical integrity of the MEA and the characteristic polarization curves. Single cells will be considered. State of the art materials but also materials and components provided by our partners will be in the scope of the studies.

Qualifications
A Master degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Physics, Chemistry, Materials science or another related field, as well as excellent language skills in English are required. The following is of particular importance for this project:
a) Interest in using advanced experimental methods
b) Fascination for the fuel cell / electrolysis technology
c) Skills in data analysis and ability to integrate high quality in the analysis process
d) Dedication to writing scientific articles

PhD position in quantum thermodynamics (theory)


We invite applications for a PhD position in the theory of thermodynamics of quantum and nanoscale devices. The position will be part of a research team working on energy conversion in small scale electronic and hybrid devices, reaching from fundamental principles to viable applications in quantum technologies. This research is funded by an ERC consolidator grant (2024-2028) and you will thus be part of a newly formed team of postdocs and PhD students working together towards a common goal. Beyond collaborations in the theory group, where you will get the possibility to bring in own research ideas, you will closely interact with local and international experimental teams.


Project description
The position will be placed in the theory division of the department for Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers, where diverse research from quantum transport, quantum information, quantum materials to quantum thermodynamics is carried out. The hired postdoc will work in the group "Dynamics and Thermodynamics of nanoscale devices", lead by Janine Splettstoesser. The specific research project of this position will deal with the thermodynamics of energy conversion of nanoscale devices.

One of the three topics will be the focus of your PhD project:
(1) Energy conversion exploiting nonthermal/nonequilibrium resources
(2) Fluctuations and precision of energy conversion in nanoscale devices
(3) Impact of quantum effects on energy conversion in electronic and hybrid devices.
The long-term goal of these projects will be to explore realistic settings in which such energy conversion processes can be exploited in quantum technologies.

Major responsibilities
For this PhD position, we seek a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with a strong interest in theoretical thermodynamics analysis of nanoscale and quantum devices. The candidate is expected to carry out their research in dialogue with local and international experimental colleagues, while growing in independence. We expect you to show initiative by proactively developing and contributing with your own research ideas within the advertised project. The major responsibility is to carry out the research project, in addition you will have some teaching responsibilities. You will work in a collaborative environment, where team work is essential for project success.

Qualifications
You should have obtained a Master degree in Theoretical Physics or similar. Experience in theory of quantum thermodynamics and/or quantum optics and/or quantum transport theory is required - several of them a merit. PhD Position in Sustainable Entrepreneurship


The Division of Entrepreneurship and Strategy is looking for a PhD student candidate in Sustainable Entrepreneurship connected to entrepreneurial development. Through this position, together with researchers and colleagues, the aim is to perform high quality research which at the same time can provide direct and indirect impact to sustainable and responsible approaches through entrepreneurship, in practice and as provided through others. The research will include international collaboration with other technical universities across Europe as well as continued development of leading edge entrepreneurship education and learning at university level and beyond.


Project description
The research addresses Sustainable Entrepreneurship, focusing upon one or more of the following themes: entrepreneurial careers, design and delivery of training in entrepreneurship to educators and practitioners (`train the trainer') and entrepreneurial ecosystems.  Research is situated in the context of an entrepreneurial (and technical) university. The research position will have connection to a four year EU funded project addressing sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation connected to entrepreneurial education and training.
This PhD candidate position is at the Division of Entrepreneurship and Strategy. At the division, research revolves around entrepreneurship and innovation strategy and teaching is primarily done in the master programs Entrepreneurship and Business Design at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship and Management and Economics of Innovation.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, your major responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. At large, PhD studies include a number of doctoral courses, literature reviews, designing research studies, collecting and analysing empirical data, and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The exact focus of the work will be decided in interaction with the main supervisor.
As a Ph.D. student you take an active role in this research project in preparing for and collecting empirical data, contributing to the database, conducting analysis and presenting results. During the project, results will regularly be presented at seminars and international conferences.
The position also includes administration and teaching responsibilities at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship corresponding to 20 per cent of working time.
