Postdoc for e-mobility with renewable energy


 Information about the research group

The postdoc will be in Urban Mobility Systems research group, a research group within Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Chalmers University of Technology. Since its foundation, the lab has received valuable support from EU, Swedish Innovation Agency, Swedish Energy Agency, and Areas of Advance Transport Chalmers, and developed close collaborations with major industry partners, such as WSP, Volvo Group and RISE etc. With the disruptive development of emerging technologies, such as electric vehicles, connected automated vehicles, and Mobility-as-a-Services, unprecedented changes have been witnessed in nearly every aspect of the urban transport system and more are foreseeable. In the past few years, the group has been actively working on those topics, and the collective effort has resulted in a number of high-quality research papers and large research grants in the past four years, and newly developed international collaborations. The position on offer will join the team to advance sustainable mobility systems, with scrupulous guidance and supportive helps from senior researchers.

Project description
The greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from the transport sector take up approximately a quarter of global GHG emissions and are still rising. To facilitate the fast transition to emission-free, more efficient and safer transportation systems, the world has witnessed significant advances in emerging transport technologies such as transportation electrification. These emerging technologies are promising panacea to renovate current mobility systems and significantly contribute to transition to more sustainable mobility systems. However, these new techniques bring not only opportunities but also challenges. There are many theoretical, technical and practical issues that need to be addressed to put these new technologies or techniques to good use. For example, massive electric vehicles put extra demand in energy systems, which should be well addressed. The integration of renewable energy in transportation electrification is one of promising potential solutions.

The research within the position will focus on advancing one or several aspects of aforementioned new challenges for electrifying urban mobility leveraging emerging techniques. The successful candidate for this position will explore the key questions for facilitating transportation electrification with renewable energy. The specific topics (but not limited to) could be:

1, Optimizing charging and renewable energy infrastructure deployment for electric vehicles (both private car and public transits)
2, Smart charging schedules and activities with consideration of interactions with other components (e.g., energy system and household electricity usage)
3, Analysis and assessments of actual usage and effects of e-mobility with renewable energy

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a postdoc researcher is to pursue your research development under the strategic themes of the research group.
The major responsibilities include:
- Pursue research in line with research project, publish and present scientific articles and take part in discussions.
- You will develop scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research, both orally and in writing such as scientific articles and reports.
- Actively collecting researchers and practitioners within academia and with society at large.
- The position will slightly contribute with teaching and supervision

Qualifications
- For this position, qualified candidates must have a PhD level degree in one of the following relevant fields: Transport engineering; Operation research; Industrial engineering; Energy system; Mathematics; Computer science; Electrical engineering or other subjects that fit the requirements of the position.

- Excellent oral and writing and communication skills in English. Swedish is a merit but not mandatory
- Strong professional/educational background in the mentioned relevant fields.
- Strong and long-term commitment and self-motivation to academic work/career
- Mathematic knowledge background about optimization, statistics and algebra
- Programming skills for solving optimization problem

The below experience or background will be appreciated:
- Research experience about electric transportation and renewable energy systems.

Postdoc position in nanoalloy nanofabrication


The Langhammer group at Chalmers University of Technology is looking for a highly motivated Postdoc with a background in nanofabrication/nanophotonics/materials science to work in the area of nanoalloy nanofabrication for application in nanophotonics, optical sensing and heterogeneous catalysis.


Project description
Alloying offers an increasingly important handle in nanomaterials design, in addition to already widely explored size and geometry of nanostructures of interest. As the key trait, the mixing of elements at the atomic level enables nanomaterials with physical or chemical properties that cannot be obtained by a single element alone and subtle compositional variations can significantly impact these properties. Alongside the great potential of alloying, the experimental scrutiny of its impact on nanomaterial function is a challenge because the parameter space that encompasses nanostructure size, geometry, chemical composition, and structural atomic-level differences between individuals is vast and requires unrealistically large sample sets if statistically relevant and systematic data are to be obtained. To address this challenge, we have developed a microshutter device for spatially highly resolved physical vapor deposition in lithography-based fabrication of nanostructured surfaces, which enables establishing compositional gradients across a surface with single nanostructure resolution in terms of alloy composition. Such arrays can subsequently be efficiently probed using single particle plasmonic nanoimaging (Nature Communications 2021, 12:5427, Nature Communications, 2020, 11(1): 4832) to in a highly parallelized fashion assess optical, as well as chemical properties of the individual particles in the array.

The focus of this postdoc position is to further develop the microshutter-based nanofabfrication of nanoparticle arrays with compositional gradients comprised of 3 elements or more to enter the realm of so-called high entropy alloys. As the second key focus, you will evaluate the obtained materials for their hydrogen sorbing and catalytic properties using primarily the single particle plasmonic nanoimaging technique.

Information about the division and the department
The Langhammer group at the Chemical Physics Divison at the Department of Physics operates at the interface between materials science, nanoscience, catalysis, nanoplasmonics and in situ spectroscopy, with a particular focus on sustainable energy-related materials, nanosensors and nanoparticles. For that purpose we continuously develop and evolve our own methodologies for state-of-the-art nanofabrication, as well as build our own customized research instrumentation. Now we intensify our efforts towards the development of nanofabricaton and optical single particle characterization methods for the rapid screeing of high entropy alloy nanoparticles and their application in plasmonic hydrogen sensors and heterogeneous catalysis.

Major responsibilities

Key parts of the work will be:
- Lithography-based nanofabrication of alloy nanoparticle arrays with compositional gradients across the array with the aim to produce alloys with at least three components
- Characterization of the obtained nanoparticles in such arrays in terms of their optical, compositional, hydrogen sorbing and catalytic properties using a variety of state of the art experimental methods with single particle plasmonic nanoimaging as a key approach
- Co-developing a next generation microshutter device to improve the spatial resolution of material deposition, as well as increase the number of elements that can be mixed with high precision


Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

The following qualifications are mandatory:
- You must have an experimental PhD in Physics, Nanoscience/Nanotechnology, Materials Science or Chemistry, ideally with experience in lithography-based nanofabrication and an interest in/experience with characterization of nanomaterial properties.
- Excellent skills in English, both written and oral.
- Excellent social skills and team player attitude with the interest to mentor PhD students.

The following qualifications are considered a merit:
- Hands-on experience with lithography-based nanofabrication
- Hands-on experience with nanophotonics/plasmonics
- Hands-on experience with optical sensing and/or spectroscopy
- Hands-on experience with studying surface reactions on metal nanoparticles
- Computer programming skills using Python and MATLAB
- Experience with numerical simulation tools such as Comsol Multiphysics or FDTD
- Experience with analysis of complex scientific data e.g. through machine learning

The position also requires excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. Applicants who do not have English or a Scandinavian language as their mother tongue need to provide documentation of good communication skills in English, typically evidenced by an English language test, for example TOEFL 550 (paper-based)/TOEFL 213 (computer-based), and exemplified during the interview process prior to admission. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Postdoc position in computational multiscale modelling of polymer foams

Are you curious to develop computational tools to predict the thermomechanical performance of polymer foams? And do you like advanced computational modelling of nonlinear material behaviour? Then please apply for this postdoc project where we aim to establish an efficient multiscale framework to predict the mechanical behaviour of closed cell polymer foams under deformation at elevated temperatures.


Information about the division and the project
The postdoc position is to be placed at the division of Material and Computational Mechanics at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The activities of the division are focused on the modelling of the mechanics of structures, components and processes along with involved materials, thereby providing mechanics-based solutions and virtual solution tools to our engineering challenges. Currently, two postdocs and about 15 PhD students are working within our main research areas: Lightweight materials and structuresMulti-phase and metallic materialsProcess modeling and simulationRailway mechanics, and Structural mechanics. As part of your engagement at the division you will be expected to teach (up to 10%). This experience will further prepare you for future academic jobs, but also for communication tasks in industry.

The project is a collaboration between academic partners in terms of Chalmers and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and industrial partners in terms of BETA CAE Systems and Diab. As such, you will have a lot of support from experienced academic researchers and industrial engineers with different expertise relevant to the project. Specifically, the work will be carried out in close collaboration with Prof. Martin Fagerström at the Division of Material and Computational Mechanics, Chalmers University of Technology; Assoc. Prof. Fang Liu at the Divison of Materials and Manufacture at Chalmers University of Technology; and Prof. Malin Åkermo and Prof. Dan Zenkert at KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Major responsibilities
As a postdoc, you will be the main responsible for planning and conducting research tasks, as well as making sure that the project progresses as planned.
The three main objectives of the project are:

  • To develop a computational multiscale modelling procedure that allows for the prediction of elastic and inelastic behaviour of polymer foams with anisotropic material structure. This part also includes efficient tools to generate representative cell models of the foam, from CT data via numerical generation (and possibly forming) of realistic cell structures
  • To apply the multiscale modelling procedure to the case of hot forming of sandwich plates, and to develop a predictive tool for how the cell structures evolves during the forming process
  • To experimentally characterise a prototype foam core material, including geometrical characterisation of cell-shape induced anisotropy.

Qualifications
As a postdoc, you will be central to the project developments, and responsible for the numerical implementation and validation of all tools developed in the project.
We expect that you:

  • are a highly motivated and self-propelled person, with a distinct interest in the mechanics of composite materials and advanced numerical tools,
  • can take on responsibilities within the project, have the ability to take own initiatives and, when needed, work independently,
  • have earned a PhD degree in Solid and/or Structural Mechanics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics or similar,
  • have documented high competence in computational methods related to computational homogenisation and nonlinear material behaviour, and
  • can demonstrate good capabilities in numerical analysis and programming

We also expect you to be able to:

  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
  • To present your results at high quality in scientific journals and at international conferences.

Postdoc - quantum thermodynamics of electronic and hybrid devices (theory)


We invite applications for a PostDoctoral position in the theory of thermodynamics of quantum and nanoscale devices. The position will be part of a research team working on energy conversion in small scale electronic and hybrid devices, reaching from fundamental principles to viable applications in quantum technologies. This research is funded by an ERC consolidator grant (2024-2028) and you will thus be part of a newly formed team of postdocs and PhD students working together towards a common goal. Beyond collaborations in the theory group, you will closely interact with local and international experimental teams; as a postdoc in the team you will have the possibility to be involved in PhD student supervision and to bring in your own research ideas.

Project description
The position will be placed in the theory division of the Department for Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers, where diverse research from quantum transport, quantum information, quantum materials to quantum thermodynamics is carried out. The hired postdoc will work in the group "Dynamics and Thermodynamics of nanoscale devices", lead by Janine Splettstoesser . The specific research project of this position will deal with the thermodynamic performance analysis of electronic nanoscale devices and of hybrid quantum systems with light-matter interaction. A particular focus will be on the unique properties of energy conversion in such devices, which are subject to fluctuations and often governed by nonequilibrium and quantum effects. The long-term goal of this project will be to explore realistic settings in which such energy conversion processes can be exploited in quantum technologies.

Major responsibilities
For this PostDoctoral project, we seek a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with a strong interest in theoretical thermodynamics analysis of nanoscale and quantum devices. The candidate is expected to carry out their research in dialogue with local and international experimental colleagues, while taking responsibility in the supervision of PhD students in the team. We expect you to show initiative by proactively developing and contributing with your own research ideas within the advertised project. The major responsibility is to carry out the research project. There is no teaching involved. You will work in a collaborative environment, where team work is essential for project success.

Qualifications
You should have obtained a PhD degree in Theoretical Physics or similar. The degree should generally not be older than three to four years. Experience in theory of quantum thermodynamics and/or quantum optics and/or quantum transport theory is required - several of them a merit. The applicant shall be self-propelled with a strong driving force to pursue excellent theoretical research in a collaborative environment. The position requires very good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Postdoc position in Sustainable Product Development

 

Position and Project description
We are forming a new research group to develop the area of Sustainable Product Development (SPD) at the Division of Product Development of the Department of Industrial and Material Science at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. This postdoc project is announced to welcome a researcher as an important part of that new group. Sustainable Product Development is here defined as when a strategic sustainability perspective is integrated and implemented into the early phases of the product innovation process and has the objective to support the acceleration of more sustainable and value-creating lifecycle solutions. The research is done in close collaboration with both researchers at the division and in collaboration with external partners.

In this postdoc project, you will contribute to the creation of novel knowledge and methods, as well as applying emerging and promising results into applied and real industrial contexts to mature and validate impact. It also includes developing the research area through the development and applicability of design strategies, simulation models, and other decision support to go beyond the EU’s Green Deal ambitions.

Research topics include for example: how to measure, quantify and visualize sustainability- and value-driven design criteria in early phases of the innovation process; develop design methodology approaches for sustainable- and circular solutions including the interplay between different actors in the value chain; design strategies to clarify risk- and value consequences from a socio-ecological sustainability perspective of proposed solutions; and, to anticipate and mitigate potential risks of rebound effects in early design.

Information about the division and the department
The Department of Industrial and Materials Science carries out research and education across a sustainable product and production lifecycle. The research activities include user-centered design, product development, computational mechanics, new materials, manufacturing, and circular production systems. The department is also heavily committed to teaching at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels in these areas. The department employs about 240 people.

You will be part of the Division of Product Development, one of six research divisions in the department. The Division of Product Development delivers research and education with a focus on new methods and tools for digital platform-based development of sustainable and robust products. Projects are often carried out in collaboration with the manufacturing and automotive industry.

We have a wide range of experience in the product development area and work both with simulations and experiments. The Division has expertise in design methodology, machine elements, mechanical engineering, computer-aided design, simulation, and optimization. The Division conducts research in three research groups: Geometry Assurance & Robust Design, Machine Elements, and Systems Engineering Design. A fourth research group in the area of Sustainable Product Development will now be developed.

We have a long tradition of solving complex problems together with industry. We collaborate with for example the automotive, aerospace, minerals, and pharmaceutical industries. We also participate in many international networks with both companies and universities.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your research in a research group.

The research is within the field of Product Development, with a focus on Sustainable Product Development. This includes individual research, co-supervision of Ph.D. students, design and management of research projects, participation in research projects, collaboration with external partners, and application for funding. It is expected that you contribute to publications in highly ranked journals, be active in international networking, and in the development of the research area of Sustainable Product Development at Chalmers.

The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's students, up to 20 % of full-time. The teaching could include, e.g., lectures, exercises, supervision of group work, personal coaching, and facilitation of dialogues and reflection.

A third important responsibility involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
Mandatory qualifications:
- To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
- The Ph.D. degree should be in one of the following fields (or equivalent): sustainable design, engineering design, or engineering with a special focus on system analysis, innovation management, industrial design, material science, or industrial ecology.

Postdoc position in development of green separation methods


 Separation is crucial in any chemical engineering- related industry. Membrane-based separation is promising for replacing the current energy-intensive techniques. Towards greener separations, this research project focuses on improving the membrane-filtration process as well as the membrane material. We are currently recruiting a post-doc for the project.

Project description
In this project, the main objective is to improve the energy-efficiency of separation processes in industry. This will be done by developing innovative membranes and membrane-filtration processes to enhance the potential of membrane-separations to replace the currently energy-intensive separation processes like distillation. This position will enable combining fundamental membrane research with practical implementation via close collaboration with industry.

This position is at the Chemical Engineering division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department at Chalmers. We have a wide range of experience and work both experimentally and with modeling. We have a long tradition of working with both fundamental scientific questions and applied problems together with industry. This position is within the unit for Chemical Process and Reaction Engineering.

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering 
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the largest departments at Chalmers. We represent a broad field of fundamental and applied research and education within chemistry and chemical engineering. Our research activities reach from fundamental chemistry, chemistry at the interface of biology and medicine, materials science, renewable energy, to chemical engineering processing, material recycling, nuclear chemistry, as well as theory and modelling. Major responsibilities
The project involves developing novel membranes and membrane processes. The novel membranes will be throughly characterized using for example XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, AFM, etc.. Membrane performance and means to improve the filtration process will be monitored using online, non-invasive techniques like optical coherence tomography, fluid dynamic gauge, etc. Collaboration with industry is planned.

The position will involve reporting current research results in both written and oral form as well as authoring scientific research publications.  

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you need need to have a PhD in separations, preferably with extensive experience in membrane-filtration experiments and membrane fabrication. The PhD degree should be  awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
Experience in organic chemistry, surface science, machine-learning, or modeling is a merit. 
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Postdoc on life cycle assessment of structural batteries in vehicles

Do you want to help in creating a more sustainable transport system? Are you interested in how life cycle assessments are done in this context? Do you like to solve problems together with other researchers?

Information about the division and the department
The Department of Technology Management and Economics broadly researches the interaction between technology development, industrial systems, society, people and the environment. Our research is linked to several of Chalmers' Areas of Advance. The Postdoc-position is most likely placed at the Division of Environmental Systems Analysis (ESA) which conducts research in the field of innovation and sustainability studies and assessment of environmental impact of technologies. We develop and explore theories and practices for understanding and transforming socio-technical-ecological systems to better meet environmental and resource constraints. Our research requires cross- and transdisciplinary efforts combining social science with various approaches for environmental assessment. The division has around 35 staff members with diverse expertise, including engineering, natural and social scientists. If the selected candidate would fit much better in the Material and Computational Mechanics group, the position might be placed there; either way, there will be strong collaboration between the groups.

Information about the project
The specific project you will work in aims to use cutting-edge knowledge from materials developers and put this in the systems context of environmental LCA in order to provide guidance on environmental challenges and opportunities. This position therefore offers the opportunity to further develop skills as a researcher in a rapidly developing field, potentially with major implications for society, in particular with regard to the transportation system. You should be interested in further developing LCA methods and practice as well as to contribute to materials and policy development around the new concept of energy storage in structural elements in a vehicle.

Major responsibilities
You will run this specific project that aims at performing and further developing LCA on the use of SBCs in vehicles. You will be supported by senior researchers from the two fields and collaborate closely with researchers in both groups. On parts of your time you might also contribute to other related projects depending on the funding situation. You will also teach in courses at the ESA division and participate in various division activities as well as seminar series or discussions in both involved groups.

Qualifications
You have a PhD in a relevant field which builds on a master degree in engineering or similar. You have a lot of experience of performing LCA and preferably in the context of vehicles, batteries or composites and for early stage technologies or in new materials development.

Postdoctor in contemporary photography and (natural) science

The Hasselblad Foundation supports, initiates and executes research into photography in all its forms of expression: as art, as documentarism, and as a science – current, historical and future-oriented. This encompasses research in relation to both photographers and artists, as well as regarding the work of theoretical researchers, which is communicated through exhibitions, publications and seminars, often in partnership with Gothenburg University. By awarding scholarships, creating platforms for exhibitions, supporting publications, lectures and symposia, and – in particular – through an interest in working relationships at both national and international level, the Hasselblad Foundation is striving to expand and improve the practical conditions for conducting and disseminating research into photography.

HDK-Valand and the Hasselblad Foundation have a long-term collaboration whose purpose is to support the exploration and development of the relations between photography and science. Within this framework, we are now seeking an artist/photographer whose interest lies in the field of (natural) science for a 2-year postdoc position, starting in January 2024.

The successful applicant will be able to define their own project within the framework of photography and (natural) science. The position is open to projects and ideas for collaboration between artistic and scientific applications which may, for instance, comprise visualisation of environmental and climate-related challenges, humanity’s relation to natural resources, or a posthuman/non-human/AI or similar approach at the intersection between photography and (natural) sciences. The postdoc position can also be linked to current projects at HDK-Valand and the Hasselblad Foundation, as well as to the growing platform in Gothenburg, which comprises various actors within and outside the world of academia who are working with visualisation linked to science and sustainable societal development.

Applications for the postdoc position can be addressing innovative relations between art and science, for example visual representation and visualisation in the field of natural science, virtual remote research, research communication and narration with XR technologies, and the collection and processing of visual data in research. Duties 

The purpose of the postdoc position is to give the employee – having successfully completed his/her doctorate – a clear opportunity to develop his/her independence as a researcher, and to establish conditions for further qualification. The position comprises 80% research and 20% teaching and/or administrative assignments. The postdoc is expected to contribute to the research and teaching environment at HDK-Valand, as well as to the research and exhibition activities at the Hasselblad Foundation. The holder of the position is likewise expected to complete the majority of his/her tasks on site in Gothenburg.

We also expect the successful candidate to show commitment to publication in leading academic journals and/or in artistic contexts and public arenas. Applicants should also strive – individually or in partnership with other researchers – to develop external research applications.

The working languages are English and possibly Swedish, or one of the other Scandinavian languages.

Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. 

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. 

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.  

Assessment criteria 

In addition to the general research competence expected of the holder of a doctorate, especial emphasis will be placed on the applicant:

  • Having strong skills in the fields of photography, art, contemporary and visual practice (artistic)
  • Displaying a critical approach and ethical awareness in relation to photography
  • Being able to demonstrate proof of scientific publication (scientific)
  • Having the ability to define an executable and innovative research project
  • Having the capacity to initiate and develop working relationships with the surrounding community
  • Having established networks, both nationally and internationally
  • Possessing strong skills in communication and planning, as well as practical organisation capacity
  • Having excellent skills in English.
  • Teaching experience would be an advantage.

We will conduct a general evaluation and select the candidate considered to possess the best conditions for implementing and developing the stated assignments.

 

Employment 

The position is  a two years time restricted full-time employment. The workplace is HDK-Valand in Gothenburg, in partnership with the Hasselblad Foundation.

The majority of assignments will be conducted on campus, but some remote teaching may be involved in accordance with Gothenburg University’s regulations.

The start date is 1 January 2024 or the date subsequently agreed upon.
