We are looking for a Research Assistant to work on the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) funded Parents and Children Together (PACT) Project. PACT-3 is a Randomised Controlled Trial of a parent-delivered language teaching programme for pre-school children at risk of language delays. This post offers an exciting opportunity for the post holder to develop their research skills on a large-scale Randomised Controlled Trial of a parent-delivered early language teaching programme. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr Kelly Burgoyne, on all aspects of the project. Principle research activities will include: co-ordinating project activities across approximately 50 schools and 500 families across the North-West; conducting language assessments with young children (3-5 years old), and scoring and entering assessment data; monitoring records of intervention delivery; supporting project team activities (including planning meetings); and contributing to project dissemination activities including project newsletters and social media.

A strong (minimum 2:1) undergraduate degree in psychology or related discipline (education; speech and language therapy) is essential and a Masters degree in psychology or similar is highly desirable. The post holder will have knowledge of child development, and experience of conducting research with children and/or schools and families. The candidate will be skilled in using a range of software packages (e.g. MS Office; SPSS), and be able to work flexibly and as part of a team. The post holder will have highly developed communication skills. Although the post is based in Manchester, the role will require some travel across the North-West to visit schools and families taking part. Some occasional evening and weekend working may be required.   The appointment will be subject to successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.

This is an opportunity for talented researchers in condensed matter theory to study physical properties (electronic band structure, electronic transport, optical and thermoelectric) of two-dimensional materials, their heterostructures, and devices based on such materials.

They are based at the National Graphene Institute (NGI), a brand-new world-class science and technology Centre with a broad scope of research in two-dimensional materials.

We seek theorists with experience (proven by publications record) in physics of two-dimensional materials, quantum transport studies, or in strongly correlated quantum systems. Skills in field-theory methods in condensed matter theory or ab initio modelling using density functional theory will be equally welcome.

Funding is provided by EPSRC, which involves collaboration with experimental groups at the NGI and Cambridge Graphene Centre.

The Research Area:

The Sustainable and Resilient Structures Research Group (www.nuigalway.ie/structures) in the SFI MaREI Centre (www.marei.ie) have expertise in developing sustainable and resilient structures for buildings and energy infrastructure. The team applies leading-edge scientific and engineering methods to develop the improved infrastructure and built environment required for sustainable social and economic development. The research group have a strong history of collaboration with industry and international research institutes. The Sustainable and Resilient Structures Research Group is part of the SFI MaREI Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine and lead the Materials & Structures research area within that national research centre. We have developed a world-leading large structures test cell in the Alice Perry Engineering building at NUI Galway. This is one of the few test facilities in the world available for accelerated life testing of full-scale tidal turbine blades, but it is also used for testing other large scale structural systems. In this state-of-the-art testing facility, located in the Alice Perry Engineering building in NUI Galway, the team are collaborating with and testing novel structures for world-leading leading marine renewable energy companies, testing large aerospace structures and testing various construction technologies.

 

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work in the Sustainable and Resilient Structures Research Group (www.nuigalway.ie/structures) under the supervision of Prof Jamie Goggins to investigate the use of advanced materials for energy, buildings and aerospace applications. There will be a specific focus on composite materials and sustainable structures, which will include design, analysis and laboratory testing. 

 

Duties:

 

Research

  • Research into composite materials and sustainable structures, which will include design, analysis and laboratory testing. This will be done under the supervision and direction of your Principal Investigator.
  • The successful candidate is expected to define research objectives and proposals for own (or joint) research in line with research strategy whilst contributing to the research programme of the Sustainable and Resilient Structures Research group (www.nuigalway.ie) in the MaREI Centre (www.marei.ie) at NUI Galway (www.nuigalway.ie).  This will be under general guidance of the Principal Investigators/ Project Leaders.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the research area(s) both nationally and internationally.
  • Develop methods and techniques appropriate to the type of research pursued that add to the intellectual understanding of the field.
  • Develop a growing reputation within their field of research.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the policy, practices and procedures, relevant to the role, the research fellow will provide advice to junior colleagues on policy and standards, which may include broader University/ sector/ external sponsor or funder (e.g. Commercial Awareness, Research Ethics, Knowledge Transfer, Patents, Intellectual Property Rights, Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities & Diversity).
  • Decide on research programmes and methodologies, often in collaboration with colleagues and sometimes subject to the approval of the head of the research programme on fundamental issues.

 

Dissemination

  • The successful candidate is expected to lead at least two publications in high quality peer reviewed journals per year.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged as directed by and with the support of and under the supervision of your Principal Investigator.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings as appropriate to the discipline in high quality/impact peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, knowledge share events.
  • Present on research progress and outcomes e.g. to bodies supervising research; steering groups; other team members, as agreed with the PI/project leader.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings/conferences.

 

Management

  • Successfully managing research projects.
  • Support the Principal Investigator and research group in the design and development of the research programme.
  • Complete administrative and management work associated with your programme of research.
  • To identify potential funding sources and to prepare and write bids for funding proposals.  To contribute and support the development of research grant funding applications.
  • Where appropriate, act as project leader and as a line manager of research teams.
  • Co-ordinate the work of research staff.  Organise and conduct meetings with research staff to clarify objectives, develop work plans/timetables for research and support staff and communicate progress.
  • Participate in the selection of staff working on their own projects.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance measures.
  • Deal with contract negotiation and financial allocation with other collaborators for research projects.
  • Plan and implement commercial and consultancy activities
  • To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

 

Support

  • Support and, where appropriate, co-supervise the work of undergraduate students e.g. Final Year Project Students. At Research Fellow, co-supervision, tutoring, mentoring and training of research graduate students associated with your research group is expected.
  • Contribute to teaching that shall normally be no more than 50 hours per annum in an associated school and under the supervision of an Academic Faculty member.
  • Take responsibility as requested for day-to-day advice and support of graduate research students associated with your research group.
  • Play a leadership role for junior colleagues
  • Peer review manuscripts for publication and/or research bids.
  • Provide expert advice on research issues to research fellows and other colleagues.

 

Other

  • Expected to make a sustained contribution to the Sustainable and Resilient Structures Research Group’s research reputation and income.
  • Continue to update knowledge and develop skills.
  • Develop internal and external contacts with researchers in related areas.
  • Contribute to work of the College/School/Research Unit through activities such as student Open Days, other promotion activity as appropriate.
  • To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

 

Qualifications/ Skills required:

 

The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or equivalent, have a strong background in composite materials and structures and is expected to have performed original scientific research within composite structures. Candidates should have excellent communication and organisational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about renewable energy; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills. The position requires communication with the different partners of the consortium, thus excellent communication skills are mandatory.

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Honours degree (at least 2.1 or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or equivalent
  • PhD in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or Materials Science on the topic of fibre reinforced composite structures.
  • Evidence of experience in design, manufacture and/or testing of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite structures
  • Evidence of leading novel composite structures research and development project teams
  • Demonstrable experience in both independent and collaborative research
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English language)
  • Evidence of scientific publication and dissemination of results in peer reviewed scientific papers

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience in laboratory testing, especially mechanical and/or structural testing.
  • Evidence of commercial development of novel composite technologies
  • Evidence of innovative thinking, able to work both independently and in cross-disciplinary teams
    • Appropriate supervisory or teaching experience may be an advantage

Job Description:

The LEG4DEV project is a large multi-partner EU-funded research and innovation project led by the Ryan Institute at National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway), with a range of university and international development partners. The collaborating partner organisations are Wageningen University and Research (WUR), Swedish Agricultural University (SLU), University of Hohenheim, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture (CCAFS), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The LEG4DEV project’s overall goal is to promote scaling of legume-based agroecological intensification of smallholder maize and cassava cropping systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) for water-food-energy nexus sustainability that enables food security and livelihood resilience. LEG4DEV’s activities are focussed on legume-scaling in four partner countries, namely Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia.

The successful candidate will be a member of the LEG4DEV Research Project Team responsible for designing and implementing Communication & MEL research activities, coordinating communication research, implementation and impact among different stakeholders and analysing the most effective means of communicating the LEG4DEV project to different stakeholders and audiences. The LEG4DEV Communications & MEL Research Officer will also be responsible for continuous research and analytics for Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning & Impact Analysis of the LEG4DEV Project.

Duties:

  • Responsible for researching and developing communications, monitoring, evaluation and learning components of the LEG4DEV research program.
  • Research, develop and implement impact-oriented strategic communication approaches for the LEG4DEV program, and investigate their impact through research that generates evidence of communications impact.
  • Research, develop, run and analyse impact of innovative campaigns and social media engagement approaches that best inform and influence audiences and key stakeholders.
  • Research, designing and conduct the monitoring, evaluation and learning research activities of the LEG4DEV program.
  • Develop innovative approaches for the organisation and running of LEG4DEV global events (both online and in-country), and develop analytical approaches for measuring the impact of LEG4DEV events from stakeholders perspectives.
  • Engage in and enable research communications activities associated with LEG4DEV, Ryan Institute and LEG4DEV institutional partners, including leverage of research systems, metrics and indicators of other institutions to benchmark impact of LEG4DEV communications, monitoring, evaluation and learning.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • Prior experience as a communications professional within a research context, particularly in an international development research context.
  • Prior experience or willingness to engage in monitoring, evaluation and learning research activities of the LEG4DEV project.
  • Proven experience in researching and developing strategic communications, innovative campaigns and social media engagement systems that can inform and influence audiences and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent research skills in web-based editing publishing, content management, video-editing and running high quality professional communications via social media platforms, and in the organisation and running of high-profile events for global and national audiences.
  • Motivation and knowledge of contemporary research issues, challenges and impact pathways relating to agriculture, food systems, climate and sustainability at global level, particularly in developing countries.
  • Fluent in English, and able to write and edit English language content to a high standard, particularly for documents communicating research and impact outputs and outcomes.  Must be able to research and innovate regarding the development of novel communications and MEL approaches (and to identify most effective approaches. Must be able to write creatively and create content that speaks to different audiences.
  • Willingness to travel to LEG4DEV research project partner countries and internationally. 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Masters-degree level qualification or equivalent in a relevant area.
  • Additional language skills.
  • Excellent team, interpersonal skills and cultural awareness.
  • Full Driving licence.
  • Experience of working on donor-funded development research projects and understanding of research results and impact pathway frameworks for research and monitoring of development research projects.
  • Prior experience working in the international development research sector, preferably in a developing world context.

  • Prior experience in monitoring evaluation and learning research
  • Video editing skills (especially those adept at storyboarding and editing for social media platforms).

1.       Research Function

  • Coordinate all market research, quantitative and qualitative for safefood including the planning, development and analysis of the results.

  • Provide input on social marketing and behaviour change approaches for safefood’s communications.
  • Exploring processes, tool, techniques and indicators from other commercial and public campaigns around the world that may be of value to safefood's message delivery.

2.       Communications

Assisting in the development, publication and advertisement of healthy eating and food safety material to be delivered through a range of sources, but particularly via digital and social media.

  • Candidates must hold a Masters in Marketing or Business Studies and be able to clearly demonstrate that they have studied social marketing in either the Masters or Degree qualification.
