Junior researcher Law & Circular Construction ('Circulaw')

 Have you just recently finished your LLM degree and are you interested in contributing new, impactful research on the circular economy? The Law Group at Wageningen University is recruiting a recent graduate to contribute to The Circulaw Amsterdam initiative, developing new insights on activating legislation and regulations to accelerate the timber construction transition. CircuLaw Amsterdam is a joint project by the AMS instituteDark Matter Labs and the City of Amsterdam.

Using timber as a circular construction material has many advantages; it has a low environmental impact and help can store CO. While the use of timber is increasing, many barriers to its effective uptake by policymakers remain. This project serves to provide new insights on the relation between existing legal instruments and successful application thereof in a real-world context. The results will be directly translated into the development of the CircuLaw application module, providing answers to questions such as:

  • What is needed/required to enable a policy maker to apply specific legal instruments that may accelerate timber construction?
  • Which elements promote the successful implementation of legal instruments in a complex transition-, organisational-, political- and socio-economic context?
  • What steps should/could a policy maker make in the application of a legal instrument?
  • How can legal instruments and other policy instruments be combined to create levers that accelerate the timber transition?

The researcher will become part of the Wageningen University Law Group. With a strong focus on finding legal solutions to social problems, the group has collective expertise on matters relating to EU law, food law, environmental law, private law, human rights law and more. The research of the group is also strongly interdisciplinary, with faculty and students from all over the world.

Due to the need for frequent contact with local stakeholders and those working on the technical side of the project, the researcher will have the opportunity to conduct part of their work at the AMS Institute; the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, located at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam. The AMS Institute is an internationally leading institute where talent is educated and engineers, designers, and both natural and social scientists jointly develop and valorize integrated metropolitan solutions.

Machine Learning Researcher

 Are you experienced in Machine Learning and data science? Would you like to add value to sustainable solutions for a better world? We, Wageningen University & Research (WUR), have a vacancy for a Machine Learning Researcher! Are you our new colleague?

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
As Machine Learning researcher at WUR, you will work within the research institute of Wageningen Food and Biobased Research (WFBR). You will contribute to data-driven solutions for our research in Biobased products and Fresh Food & Chains.

An example: it is difficult to know how the quality of fresh products develops during transportation. When the product arrives at its final destination, its reduced quality may be reflected in a reduced price, or worse: the product is wasted. Imagine that a batch of bananas is harvested in South Africa and transported in containers to the Netherlands. Data on temperature, ethylene and humidity are collected via sensors in the containers. What can you do with this information? The harvesting and transportation conditions can be used to develop a quality prediction model and to advise whether the bananas should already be sold in France - while the quality is still good - or whether they arrive in good shape for sale on the Dutch market. In this way, the prediction model you developed will help to reduce food waste and your knowledge contributes to create a more sustainable world.

Another example: Plant-based products (e.g. soy, pea) can be used after fermentation for specific meat- or dairy alternatives. In the fermentation process, every substrate and strain has different effects on the functionality of the fermented product. Understanding and optimising fermentation processes would traditionally require an experiment for every possible combination and condition. This is very time-consuming and therefore not feasible. By using machine learning in combination with data from previous experiments, predictions can be made about the benefits of new combinations. These predictions will be the foundation for new innovative and sustainable products.

Will it be a challenge? Yes! Do you have to do this on your own? No! You will work together in a team. You will work on multiple different projects where the software development will be done in an Agile way. Knowledge sharing is the key to successful projects and teamwork. To achieve this success, we meet each other multiple times a week in Wageningen.
WFBR is a research institute with funding from market and government parties. To obtain this funding we need to do acquisition. You will also work with our business developers to come up with feasible ideas for innovative solutions. Once a project is granted we expect you to lead it, now or in the future. This will be based on your experience and ambition.

We ask

You have:

  • an MSc or PhD in a relevant field such as Artificial Intelligence, computer science, mathematics, etc. added with at least 4 years of work experience (or PhD research) in data science/AI;
  • proven experience in AI methodology: e.g. feature engineering, model selection, model validation, supervised/unsupervised learning, optimization, knowledge engineering, (deep) neural networks, probabilistic methods, statistics, visualizations, time-series analysis, natural language processing;
  • proficient in AI software development:
    • developing and maintaining code in Python using common AI-libraries
    • algorithm and architecture design
    • software testing
    • version management (Git, SVN)
    • database integration (querying SQL / SPARQL);
  • knowledge on semantic technologies such as RDF, RDFs, OWL is a plus;
  • knowledge of the Microsoft Azure cloud platform and API development is a plus.
Besides your technical knowledge, we also expect you to be communicative, fluent in English (C1 level), innovative and a real team player.

  • 8% holiday allowance in May;
  • a fixed December bonus of 4%;
  • excellent pension scheme.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between €2949,- and €5479,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 10 - 11). Research Specialist in Stem Cell Biology

 We are looking for an experienced and ambitious researcher in stem cell biology. We offer a fun, collaborative and stimulating work environment as well as career development track opportunities towards Senior Research Specialist and Associate Professor (docent). The successful candidate will be part of a research team working on innovative projects with industry collaboration and real clinical applications.

The Research Unit

The Center for Hematology and Regenerative medicine, HERM, is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational hematology and immunology. HERM is located in the NEO building and consists of a mix of clinical and preclinical research groups, each with a focus on clinically relevant questions in hematology, stem cell biology and immunology, including basic immunology, immunodeficiency and transfusion immunology.

The research environment at HERM is very vibrant and collaborative. The equipment is state of the art. We have nearby core facilities focusing on advanced FACS, single cell transcriptomics and live cell imaging. Each week, there are seminars with distinguished invited speakers from all over the world. Every year, there are retreats and locally arranged conferences. For example, the Stratregen conference in October 2022, the Young Hematologist symposium and the local NEO building retreat.

Our team currently has three members. We belong to the lab of Professor Petter Höglund. We have close collaboration with Dr Joel Nordin’s research group which focuses on exosomes and strategies to genetically modify stem cells for clinical purposes. We are also working closely together with Dr Hong Qian’s group, which specializes on the leukemia niche.

Description of the subject area

We are interested in the interaction between hematopoietic stem cells and the extracellular matrix. Using 10X single sequencing + antibody tags, we are characterizing the full spectrum of adhesion molecules that are expressed by Hematopoietic Stem and different lineages of Progenitor Cells. We are also planning to use SmartSeq single cell sequencing to characterize Mesenchymal Stem Cells from human bone marrow.

Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells (HSPCs) are adherent cells in the bone marrow, and we hypothesize that integrin-mediated signaling is important for maintaining them ex vivo. We are focused on human HSPCs and we are taking a systematic approach to tackle this research question. We have a VINNOVA innovation-project together with the company Cellevate AB, which manufactures 3D scaffolds for bioreactor purposes. The idea is to customize 3D scaffolds with different cell adhesive molecules and integrin ligands, suitable for HSPCs. Using customized 3D scaffolds, we plan to systematically study the biological effects of stimulating different integrin ligands on stem cells.

The clinical applications we are working on are ex vivo expansion of stem cells and selective differentiation of stem cells to different lineages, mainly granulocyte and megakaryocyte progenitor cells. The goal is to establish a method for transplanting short-lived progenitors to patients with neutropenia and transfusion-refractory thrombocytopenia. These will give a transient engraftment for a week and protect the neutropenic/thrombocytopenic patient from infections and bleeding during that time. As above-mentioned, from a scientific perspective, this will require us to systematically dissect the role of cell-adhesion on intracellular signaling pathways in HSPCs.

  • What adhesion molecules are expressed on human HSPCs.
  • Do different integrins elicit different signaling cascades?
  • How do other cell adhesion molecules like Syndecans modulate integrin signaling?
  • How does integrin signaling interact with growth factors to determine stemness and direction of differentiation?

We work with human stem cell sources. Our research team has unlimited access to large amounts of Peripheral Blood Mobilized CD34+ stem cells from healthy donors of different ages. We also have access to human Bone Marrow and Umbilical Cord Blood stem cells, albeit less frequently (10-12 times a year). In parallel, we are also working on establishing a biobank with frozen AML and KML blast to translate the findings to haematological malignancies.

Your mission

The focus of your duties is to drive research projects on integrin signaling in Stem Cells as well as developing methods to harness integrin signaling in ex vivo culture of stem cells for clinical purposes. An additional key task is to give intellectual, practical and administrative support to other members of the research group. We are seeking one Research Specialist with PhD and several years of laboratory research with focus on stem cell biology, who will work as an integrated research specialist in our team, being involved in several ongoing projects. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English is essential. Your daily tasks will include:

  • Elaboration of scientific hypothesis, experimental design
