The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at Assistant Professor level in the Environmental Sciences group. Human-induced pressures such as nutrient enrichment, climate change and land use change for food production are altering terrestrial ecosystems and threatening biodiversity.

You will contribute to understanding the effects of these pressures on terrestrial vegetation in the context of global change and the ambition of sustainable development. Your research specifically contributes to halting biodiversity loss and solving the friction between nature and agriculture. You are expected to develop an internationally renowned research line at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development.

As our new Assistant Professor you will teach in the Bachelor's programme Global Sustainability Science (i.e. teaching in courses on natural processes and (biogeo)chemistry and developing a Sustainable Food Track) and the internationally leading Master's programme Sustainable Development (including designing a field course). Teaching is in English. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to supervise Bachelor's and Master's projects. In the first two years the teaching load will be 50%, after two years the teaching load will increase to 60%.

You will contribute to the acquisition and execution of externally funded projects. Coaching and supervising PhD students is also one of your responsibilities. You will be stimulated and coached in applying for a personal research grant.

The Copernicus Institute works in interdisciplinary teams and has organized research around cross-topical themes and sustainability challenges.

Qualifications

• You have expertise in plant ecology (terrestrial ecosystems, biodiversity, nutrients), soil chemistry, plant soil interactions and/or biogeochemistry.
• You are interested to work in an interdisciplinary research group on themes such as agro-ecology, interactions between nature and agriculture, restoration ecology, nature based solutions and ecosystem services.
• You have experience with field work and experiments, have floristic skills and are skilled in the lab. Modeling skills are considered a plus.

Offer

For the tenure track we offer a temporary position (0.8-1.0 FTE) for six years in combination with a four-year tenure track qualification programme. Your performance will be subject to annual evaluations as well as an end-term evaluation after 3.5 years. Following a positive evaluation - based on the faculty performance indicators - your employment will become permanent after four years, or sooner depending on the moment you qualify. In case the 3.5-year evaluation is not satisfactory, the contract will be terminated. A continuation after the first four years is only possible for the purpose of compensation of maternity or parental leave or other recognized delays. Further career development to Associate Professor (level 2) is possible, depending on qualification.

The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €3,746 and €5,127 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. Doctoral (PhD) student position in cognitive neuroscience

 

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Aging Research Center is one of the divisions at the NVS Department, located at KI campus Solna. The Aging Research Center is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing psychology, sociology, and various branches of medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, and psychiatry). In the psychology sector of the center, we examine brain correlates of cognitive aging and seek to understand how genetic and lifestyle factors shape development of brain and cognition in adulthood and old age. We approach these research questions with small-scale neuroimaging studies, large-scale intervention (e.g., training) studies, and large-scale population-based longitudinal studies. Our research group consists of senior researchers, postdocs, and doctoral students.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

In Bayesian decision theory, prior beliefs refer to the probability that the decision-maker attributes to qualities of the world before any evidence is considered. These prior beliefs about the world impact choices about affectively significant outcomes and may be important for conditions such as depression. However, the probability distributions comprising these priors have not yet been inferred from people’s choices and there is no direct evidence that these distributions are represented in the brain.

The present doctoral project aims at setting up an experimental paradigm to quantify prior beliefs about the world and to subsequently use it to quantify these beliefs in healthy volunteers and identify the brain regions where these prior beliefs are represented. The project also aims to quantify prior beliefs in depressed patients and to relate them to the expression of depression symptoms and clinical outcomes. In addition to participating in some of the data collection, the successful candidate is expected to play a critical role in formulating scientific research hypotheses, testing those hypotheses by using proper study designs, learning to use computational models of decision-making as well as univariate and multivariate fMRI data analysis, and writing scientific articles in English. The student will work independently to execute his or her doctoral project, in collaboration with the research team and supervisors.

Doctoral (PhD) student position in human T cell immunology

The research group

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the group of Professor Johan K. Sandberg as a PhD student to work on a project concerning the immunobiology of Mucosa-associated Invariant T (MAIT) cells. The research group is based at the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM), a nationally leading and internationally competitive environment for studies of the human immune system in the context of infectious diseases. The group has a long-standing interest in human immunology, with a focus on the role of T cell responses against infections.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

This doctoral project will be focused on the anti-microbial activity and functional diversity of human MAIT cells to help understand the role of these cells in health and disease. Furthermore, the project will aim to investigate the antibacterial functions of MAIT cells in tissues. This position is supported by an internal Karolinska Institutet KID grant. The successful candidate will take part in all research-related activities such as group meetings, departmental seminars, national/international meetings, as well as standard laboratory routines of the group. Skills and personal qualities

For this PhD project we are seeking a highly motivated person with a strong desire to study the human immune system. The successful applicant needs to be fluent in English, have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Merit is previous laboratory experience of human immunology studies. Great advantage is previous experience in work with primary immune cells and microbes, confocal microscopy, transcriptomics and flow cytometry.

Department

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.

Research Group

The Silberberg lab uses electrophysiological, morphological, optical, and computational methods to study neural circuits in the neocortex and basal-ganglia underlying sensorimotor functions. More information about the lab can be found here:

Duties

The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency, be able to collaborate with others in a team, good communication skills (English speaking and writing), and be willing to supervise students. Successful candidates should have a strong neuroscience background with documented experience in electrophysiology and/or imaging. Experience in surgery, animal behavior, computer programming, and manuscript writing are highly advantageous. The project will involve in vivo and ex vivo patch-clamp recordings, optogenetics, and imaging in the cortex and basal ganglia in mice.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. Scholarships are provided for the first two years and may be extended to salaries according to progress and available funding.

Location: Biomedicum, Karolinska Institutet, Solna campus.

Postdoctoral studies in DNA damage and ubiquitin signaling (scholarship)

 

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB, https://ki.se/en/cmb/department-of-cell-and-molecular-biology) is one of five departments conducting advanced experimental research under one roof in the new building of Biomedicum, Karolinska Institutet (https://ki.se), one of Europe's largest laboratories with ultramodern facilities. CMB is a department with a strong focus on basic science and conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Division

The successful applicant will join a smaller group currently comprising four members. The research team is physically located at the Biomedicum quarter 7A and share lab with four other groups working on different aspects of biology, including genomic integrity/DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, metabolism and protein ubiquitylation. The position is placed in the research group of Olle Sangfelt (https://ki.se/en/cmb/olle-sangfelts-group) and the projects are focused on investigating how ubiquitin ligases controls different regulatory pathways essential for cellular life, in particular cell cycle control, DNA repair and cell motility. The overall goal of the research is to translate basic scientific discoveries to cancer biology and development of novel treatment strategies.

Duties

The projects are centered around functional analysis of ubiquitin ligases in combination with interdisciplinary translational studies and involves collaborations with both national and international researchers. The postdoc will operate closely with the group leader to jointly develop and organize laboratory duties, including organizing meetings/courses, ordering of lab-related items, introduction of new employees to maintain a high standard of professionalism within research group. The postdoc will carry out independent laboratory research to functionally explore specific ubiquitin ligases regulating critical targets that directly influence cancer ¨driver¨ and ¨escape¨ programs. The postdoc will also aid in biomarker discovery through close collaboration with scientific partners in the field. One important aim of the research is to unravel mechanisms of drug resistance and specific vulnerabilities in cancer that can lead to the development novel therapeutic approaches.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoc with extensive experience in functional characterization of proteins regulating DNA repair/checkpoints, cell cycle and cell motility. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong academic record, including publications in well-reputed scientific journals (including first authorships). Documented technological experience in microscopy, protein interaction/activity analysis/screens and regulated gene silencing/overexpression systems, good knowledge in written and spoken English is required. Experience from ubiquitin research, transcriptional regulation, bioinformatics and cancer genetics is an advantage. The candidate should appreciate problem solving and development of new technologies required to bring the project forward but also demonstrate an ability to complete projects within a defined time frame.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
