PhD position Hydraulic Structures

In a world affected by climate change and sea level rise, the increasing frequency of water-related natural disasters represents a serious threat to coastal and riverine communities. In the Netherlands, severe floods and the potential failure of hydraulic structures would lead to catastrophic consequences on people’s safety, on the economy and on the built environment. Therefore, to improve human safety, mitigate damages and reduce reconstruction costs, the development and assessment of resilient infrastructure is of primordial importance.

In this context, your Ph.D. will address the impact of water-related natural disasters on critical infrastructure and related systems, including behaviours and failure modes under extreme hydraulic conditions. Specific attention will be given to the unsteady nature of these processes, focusing on the interplay between air and water and its implication in hydraulic, structural and geotechnical aspects. Results from this Ph.D. project are expected to be most helpful in the development of design guidelines, disaster prevention strategies and evacuation plans.

The project will be experimental and you will be working in the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory of TU Delft. As a PhD candidate you will be part of the Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk section in the Hydraulic Engineering department, supervised by Dr. Davide Wüthrich and Prof. Dr. Bas Jonkman. Throughout the project, you will be given the opportunity to work with leading academic and industrial partners, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Requirements

We are looking for an excellent candidate with the following qualifications, knowledge and skills:

  • A M.Sc. degree in the areas of Hydraulic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other related areas.
  • Knowledge in hydraulic engineering, hydraulic structures, fluid mechanics or fluid-structure interaction
  • Research experience in experimental or field work is a plus
  • Independent, self-motivated, curiosity-driven and open to communicate and collaborate with peers.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both verbally and in writing.

If your mother language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction, you must submit proof of English proficiency from either TOEFL (minimum total score of 100) or IELTS (minimum total score of 7.0). Proof of English language proficiency certificates older than two years are not accepted.

Conditions of employment

TU Delft offers PhD-candidates a 4-year contract, with an official go/no go progress assessment after one year. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2395 per month in the first year to € 3061 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation.

PhD in Biophysics

We are looking for a highly motivated student with biophysics research experience to join the Joo lab. The selected candidate will take a lead in a single-molecule biophysics project and investigate small RNA and CRISPR systems. To this end, the candidate will use and further develop a new single-molecule fluorescence platform. This platform combines single-molecule fluorescence imaging and next-generation sequencing to enable the observation of millions of different DNA or RNA sequences.

The Joo group (www.chirlmin.org) is a single-molecule biophysics research lab within the Department of Bionanoscience at the TU Delft. Using single-molecule fluorescence tools, we investigate how proteins interact with RNA, DNA, and other proteins. We develop new single-molecule platforms such as massively parallel single-molecule fluorescence and single-molecule protein sequencing.

Requirements

The candidate should have an MSc degree in the field of physics. An application from a candidate who is experienced in biophysics will be favorably treated. Good communication skills in English are required.
