PHD STUDENT IN INTEGRATED CIRCUIT DESIGN FOR OPEN-SOURCE PROCESSOR DEVELOPMENT

What you will do
The world around us is changing in an increasing pace. Everything around is getting connected to cloud and we are gathering enormous amount of data. We as IC engineers must meet these challenges by embedding new function rapidly to different platforms. We need processor cores to support mixed-mode functionalities of any system-on-chip implementation. One way to tackle these needs is to embed and develop open-source processors with custom functions. We are looking for a new doctoral student who can tackle these challenges in industry collaboration project.


In this fully funded position, you have an opportunity to be involved in world-class research in Integrated Circuit (IC) design applied to open-source processor (RISC-V) development. You will contribute to novel design ideas, in a team of circuit designers. You will work in a multidisciplinary network, in close collaboration with other students, to grow, design and promote your ideas with full-custom ICs.  
      
What we offer you
Exciting working topic. You will develop competences at the interface between IC design and open-source platforms. You will apply them in a project involving the main industrial partners.

Competitive salary and contract terms. The starting salary for a PhD student is approximately 2500€/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. You are expected to complete doctoral research and studies within four years in the Doctoral Programme in Electrical Engineering of Aalto University. Who you are
•    You have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. High average grades as well as excellent grades on courses on electronics are an asset.
•    You just obtained your diploma, or you already gained some design experience in industry.
•    You are passionate about IC design and microprocessor architectures.
•    You are open-minded for new research, eager to learn more and fit to teamwork.
•    You have some hands-on experience or courses taken on IC design and tools. Specifically, experience with the Cadence software suite is a strong asset, as well as interests in analog and/or mixed-signal design.

The Electronic Circuit Design (ECD) unit of the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at the School of Electrical Engineering has researched RF, analog, and digital integrated circuits already close to thirty years with outstanding outcomes and we have a strong network of collaborators and funding. The ECD unit has three professors (Jussi Ryynänen, Kari Halonen and Martin Andraud), three senior researchers and about 20 doctoral candidates and research assistants.

Daytime stands for Digital Lifecycle Twins for Predictive Maintenance. The objective of the Daytime `project is to demonstrate the applicability of Industry 4.0 and in particular DayTime innovations beyond traditional productions plants into the hospitals and the home by treating healthcare equipment as means or tools for production.

Healthcare encompasses both capital intensive equipment in hospitals and smart consumer products at homes. In either case reliable mapping of user interaction into system response is crucial in supporting the customer to optimally operate the product. DayTime will enable manufacturers to transform into digital service provides giving advice tailored to the user. This advice will be based on actual system status and usage combining digital twin concepts with user/usage profiling. The advice encompasses suggestions to improve performance, reduce wear and tear and provide instructions to improve longevity or pro-actively deliver maintenance as service.

The TU/e will focus on knowledge valorization by creating and translating research results into successful innovations, working together with the consortium partners, especially with Philips Research and Philips Magnetic Resonance business on the topics of predictive and reactive maintenance by applying data science and artificial intelligence technologies.

TASKS of the post-doctoral researcher:

  • carry out research within the project, in cooperation with the other parties involved;
  • report on the results in project deliverables, papers and conference contributions;
  • a small contribution to the teaching activities of the Computer Science Faculty may be asked.

Job requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • A PhD degree in computer science, information science or related fields (mathematics or electrical engineering);
  • A research oriented attitude;
  • Solid publication record and accomplishments in machine learning and or artificial intelligence
  • Knowledge and practical experience in at least one of the following areas: NLP, text mining, machine learning, and knowledge management
  • Solid programing skills (e.g. Java)
  • Knowledge of Phyton, R Tensorflow, and/or similar languages/tools;
  • Ability to work in a team, interest in collaborating with the industrial partners;
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

As a newly appointed faculty member, you will be working in the Electronics Systems Group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Electronic Systems Group

The Electronic Systems (ES) group consists of seven full professors, two associate professors, eight assistant professors, several postdocs, approximately 40 PDEng and PhD candidates, and support staff. The ES group is world-renowned for its design automation and embedded systems research. The group aims to provide a scientific basis for design trajectories of electronic systems, ranging from digital circuits to cyber-physical systems. ES research is organized in three sub-programs that cover the engineering, system and circuit perspectives: Model-driven engineering, smart electronic systems, and digital nano-electronics. ES has strong collaborations with industry, research institutes and other universities. Thirteen of its staff members have a second affiliation besides their TU/e-ES affiliation. The group is a multi-cultural team, with staff members of eight different nationalities and students from all over the world.
