Assistant Professor of Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Public Sector

Project description 
This position contributes to the Institute of Public Administration's ambition to further strengthen its education and research in this area. We are looking for candidates with a background in public administration, public policy, digital government or a comparable field. The new colleague will be positioned in the Digitalisation and Public Policy group, a creative and ambitious team working on digitalisation, data and AI in public policy and governance. The team is committed to team-based science and education and has excellent working relationships with other groups and disciplines, is an active member of SAILS (the interdisciplinary AI network at Leiden University), and actively seeks collaboration with public sector practice.

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching and developing courses in the institute's bachelor and master programmes, specifically on the area of digital technologies in the public sector, both within our own public administration programmes and in programmes with other faculties;
  • Supervising bachelor and master theses on the topic of this position;
  • Building and expanding your own line of research in the field of public administration, specifically on the intersection of policy, governance, data and AI;
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary projects and interfaculty initiatives on artificial intelligence (AI), for instance with colleagues from the Faculty of Law and the department of computer science (LIACS);
  • Participate in national and international academic research networks and publish in international scientific journals;
  • Contributing to the improvement and continuation of the education and research programs of the Institute;
  • Play an active role in linking scientific research and education to the practice of policy and management on the topic of this position;
  • Contribute to the acquisition of research grants. 

Selection criteria

  • You hold a doctorate in public administration, political science, organizational sciences, sociology or another relevant field in the social sciences, with a research agenda that fits this position’s focus on data, AI and digitalization in public administration and policy;
  • You have demonstratable affinity with and knowledge about public governance, especially with respect to digitalisation, data, and AI;
  • You have publications in national and international scientific journals or demonstrable potential to realise them;
  • You are enthusiastic about teaching, have experience with university teaching and are open to innovative and activating teaching methods;
  • You are a team player and like to work with colleagues, who are partly employed at other institutes and faculties;
  • You have experience or affinity with collaborating with societal partners within the public sector (local, national or international) and are capable of developing and maintaining external networks;
  • You have a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are prepared to obtain this qualification within two years;
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, in Dutch and English, or are prepared to develop sufficient command of Dutch for professional purposes within the foreseeable future.

Terms and conditions
The appointment will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. You will be offered a temporary appointment for 18 months. Depending upon funding and performance, the position can be extended to a permanent position. The salary varies, depending on qualifications and experience, from € 3,807.- to € 5,211.- gross per month based on full-time employment (scale 11 for Assistant professor).

Post doc in simulation modelling of soil C and N dynamics

 



The Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, invites applications for a post doc
position in simulation modelling of soil C and N dynamics. The position is available for a 3-year period.

Research area and duties

Exchange of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) between agroecosystems and the environment is a major research theme within the department. Gaseous emissions of C and N and the turnover of C and N in soil influence soil fertility and environmental loads. To optimize resource use efficiency, this calls for process-based research and developments within empirical and simulation modelling, e.g. to quantify measures for reducing nitrate leaching and greenhouse gas emissions and establish impacts on long-term soil C sequestration and national C accounting. The department provides policy support at national scale. This involves pro-active research, including an integration of experimental activities and modelling for upscaling. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for further developing and applying empirical and simulation models of C and N flows at the department. This involves linkages to experimental research and to integration with national farm- and field-scale data. A particular focus will be on nitrogen emissions and soil C storage as affected by agricultural management. Results from field experiments, experiments under controlled conditions and from monitoring activities must feed into mathematically formulated simulation models used within the department and in collaborative projects with other national and international research groups. The successful candidate will also take part in teaching and supervision of students at BSc, MSc and PhD level.

  • PhD degree or equivalent qualifications within agroecology or soil science
  • Solid experience of relevance to the announced position

Job description/research project/research area

You are expected to contribute to the identification of genes controlling plant interactions with complex soil microbial communities through genome-wide association scans, transcriptome profiling and mutant characterization. The work will involve plant phenotyping and genetic manipulation as well as NGS library preparation and data analysis.
 

Your profile

Applicants should hold a PhD in molecular biology or equivalent.

Documented experience with plant molecular biology is required. Fluency in spoken and written English is expected. Experience with characterization of molecular mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions as well as microbiome and RNA-seq profiling and data analysis is an advantage. In addition, the candidate should be able and prepared to work as part of a large team in a collaborative project.

PhD on Evaluating the role of seaweeds in transformative trajectories of Danish food production systems towards sustainability

Re-advertisment: Evaluating the role of seaweeds in transformative trajectories of Danish food production systems towards sustainability

Research area and project description:
The last century has witnessed significant intensifications of natural resource abstraction by agri-food systems and various industrial activities based on linear resource management and accompanied by insufficient pollution control. The economic development has come at a severe cost of ecosystem health and integrity, which contributes to environmental impacts such as global warming, eutrophication, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss and consequently leads to reduced or even diminished natural ecosystem services that humans depend on. Meanwhile, the global societal challenge of food safety and security remains unsolved. As such, eco-innovations are necessary to optimize the environmental performance of the agri-food system while sustaining its provisioning service of food and nutrition to meet human demands.

In Denmark, agricultural trade represents a significant component of Danish economy, and 62% of  the arable land is used for intensive agriculture. By 2030, EU requirements  demand that the Danish non-quota sectors including agriculture to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 39% compared to 2005 levels. By 2050, major agricultural organizations in Denmark attempt to achieve a common goal of becoming carbon neutral.

In such transformative trajectories of Danish food production systems towards sustainability, seaweeds may play significant roles. The past decade has seen a growing interest in the exploitation of local seaweed bio-resources in Denmark due to their commercial potentials and more importantly nature of being environmentally sustainable. Seaweeds do not require no freshwater, arable land, and fertilizer during biomass growth.

Seaweeds can be integrated into agri-food systems via different pathways. Some species can be used for direct food and feed consumption, and some are rich in protein and are suitable for protein extraction. Such integrations into existing food systems contribute to the substitution of commercial food products with heavy environmental footprints. Furthermore, bioactive molecules of seaweeds may help reduce methane emissions from dairy cattle due to the inhibitory effects on ruminant enteric fermentation.

This PhD project is part of two research and innovation projects, Climate Feed  and SeaSus-protein, that are investigating the above-mentioned utilization potentials and emission-reducing effects. The PhD project is expected to contribute to creating climate-resilient Danish food systems by providing science-based decision support for relevant stakeholders on system optimization, business strategic planning, and policy making to. The expected research work includes:

  • Evaluation of the environmental performance of seaweed-based food products
  • Quantifying the cumulative carbon footprints of value chains utilizing different seaweeds and valorisation pathways
  • Assessing the ecosystem services of seaweed biomass production via harvesting algal blooms, aquaculture, and wild harvest

Qualifications and specific competences:
You have a  have a relevant Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent program with excellent academic results and preferably

  • have prior experience performing material flow analysis (MFA) and life cycle assessment (LCA); prior experience in life cycle costing or cost-benefit analysis is an advantage.
  • have good collaboration skills and can work independently
  • be fluent in English (oral and scientific writing)

Postdoc in Microcomb technology and applications

 

We are seeking a postdoc for a project with the overall aim to investigate the potential of a new class of coherent microresonator frequency combs, namely dark optical solitons (or dark pulse Kerr combs), in advanced optical communication systems. 

Information about the research and the laboratory
An optical frequency comb is a laser source whose spectrum is made of evenly spaced and narrow frequency lines that maintain broadband phase coherence across the bandwidth. Microresonator frequency combs (microcombs) constitute an alternative platform to femtosecond mode-locked lasers for realizing frequency combs on a chip scale. Their compactness, compatibility with standard semiconductor fabrication techniques and large (> 10 GHz) line spacing enable new opportunities in frequency synthesis and metrology: from advanced communications to radio-frequency photonics.

The project is funded by the European Research Council and we are seeking a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in frequency comb technology.

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for ultrafast optical science and have access to in-house cleanroom facilities to manufacture our own nanophotonic structures.

Major responsibilities
As postdoctoral fellow, your main responsibilities are to lead and conduct research, and guide junior PhD students. You will have the freedom to contribute with your ideas and collaborate with other senior researchers and professors.

Qualifications
You should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You must have experience with supervision of junior students (PhD or Master). You must have solid experience with ultrafast optics (laser frequency combs), nanophotonics and finite element method solvers.

Knowledge of standard finite element solvers and computational techniques in nonlinear optics (generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, Lugiato-Lefever equation, etc.) is a plus.

Contract terms

The division has hosted past international conferences such as ICSE 2018, SPLC 2018, ICSA 2017, and REFSQ 2015. For industrial research, the division hosts the Software Center, an associated institute with a network of five universities and ten global companies including Siemens, Axis, and Jeppesen.

The successful candidate will conduct research with Assoc. Prof. Jennifer Horkoff and Prof. Miroslaw Staron and work in tight collaboration with world-class researchers in the Software Engineering Division at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. In particular, the division has a strong interesting in AI for Software Engineering, with several faculty members, Postdocs and PhD students working in this area.

Subject area description
his project applies AI and ML techniques to understand and improve software architecture, working with our industrial partners to create techniques which work in practice. We aim to use deep learning to train a model to understand the principles of software architecture from data such as source code and architectural descriptions in natural/structured languages. In partnership with human architects, such a domain understanding model would then be used to (1) Transform existing code that follows one set of architectural conventions to another set of conventions and (2) Assist coders in complying with a defined set of architectural conventions as they write new code. Such a model would therefore address the critical need of ensuring continuous architecture compliance, helping companies to rapidly develop new functionality while minimizing technical debt and the cost of maintenance.

The Postdoc will work in this project, collaborating with academic and industrial partners to apply AI and ML techniques to software architecture analysis.

Job assignments
This position is a fulltime position for two years as a postdoc researcher in the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The position requires the conduction of high-quality research, with publication at relevant peer-reviewed venues. The candidate is expected to develop their own scientific concepts and communicate the results of their research verbally and in writing.

The major responsibility as a postdoc is to pursue research related to the project. The postdoc will find and parse relevant code and architectural data from open source project and the participating companies. They will run and evaluate machine learning algorithms on this data and analyze and iterate on the results. They will participate in project meetings and coordination duties and will prepare and submit scientific publications. The proposed work requires presence at the premises of the collaborating companies, and therefore the candidate must have good social skills and collegial qualities.

The postdoc will also conduct teaching duties as needed, including giving lectures, grading assignments, and exams.

Eligibility
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

You should have achieved a doctoral degree by the application deadline to qualify for a position as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated in the advertisement, for example, Applied AI or Machine Learning, or AI for Software Engineering, or Software Architecture Analysis. Since a position as postdoc aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The person who has acquired a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are considered to be a leave of absence due to illness, service in the total defense, commissions of trust within professional and student organizations or parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Experience with software architecture, AI and machine learning is desirable, ideally shown through publications in international conferences and journals on relevant topics.

Knowledge about deep learning (as acquired for example in training courses) is desirable.

The ability to work in a team as well as to systematically work within a project environment and its deadlines is desirable.

Postdoc in Doping of Conjugated Polymers for Wearable Electronics

 


We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc to join our research group at Chalmers. You will be part of our organic electronics team and focus on the electrical characterisation of doped conjugated polymers. You will work closely with several PhD students in our group, as well as with several external collaborators, and together study the mechanical, electrical and electrochemical properties of different types of doped conjugated polymers. The goal of your project will be to develop methods that allow to study the electrical and mechanical properties in-situ and characterise materials that are of interest for thermoelectrics, bioelectronics and wearable electronics, including e-textiles.

Information about the research
The Müller Research Group at the division of Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering focuses on the physical chemistry and materials science of organic semiconductors, polymer blends and composites, and develops new plastic materials for use in the fields of wearable electronics and energy technology. All research is conducted in co-operation with other universities/institutes and/or industry. Presently, our group consists of 1 Professor, 2 Postdocs and 8 PhD students.

Major responsibilities
The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research, in collaboration with other postdocs and students in our group, as well as collaborating groups. In addition, you are expected to support and mentor the PhD students in our group that work on related topics. As a Postdoc you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in writing.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, we would like you to have a PhD degree in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent (or be in the process of completing a PhD degree) with focus on organic electronics. The degree should generally not be older than three years. You should have a promising track record of early achievements such as scientific publications. Experience with characterization tools that allow to study the electrical and electrochemical properties of organic semiconductors and in particular conjugated polymers is required. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, you need to have excellent collaboration skills. A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing is required.

Assistant Professor - Philosophy of Science

 

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of philosophy of science.
