Postdoctoral position studying marine VOC in the Arctic

The Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University are pleased to invite applications for a 24-month postdoctoral scientist position to work on the interdisciplinary Villum Experiment project “Does organic matter released from the melting Greenland Ice Sheet influence cloud processes in the Arctic?” The position offers a unique research opportunity to conduct both field and laboratory investigations in an area extremely impacted by climate change and thus high on the international agenda

Job description

The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting fast and releasing large stores of organic material (OM) to the coastal ocean. This project hypothesizes that this OM could be volatilized (to volatile organic compounds, VOC), serving as a precursor to aerosols on which cloud droplets grow.

There are currently few known sources of VOC and aerosols to the Arctic atmosphere, but recent research hints that some marine VOC may have allochthonous origins. Clouds and aerosols are critical to understand because they have both warming and cooling effects, and thus the potential to amplify or buffer climate warming. Yet they remain one of most unconstrained variables affecting Earth’s radiative balance. This project will expand our understanding of the coupling of land-ocean-atmospheric processes and uncover novel sources of VOC influencing cloud formation processes in the Arctic.

The postdoctoral candidate will participate in a field expedition to Northeast Greenland (August 2022), where they will collect samples from Greenland Ice Sheet run-off and marine surface waters, along with atmospheric samples. The candidate will be tasked with characterizing OM and VOC contributions from the Greenland Ice Sheet using spectrophotometry, combined with molecular-level analyses using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Additionally, the candidate will evaluate the potential for these VOC to form aerosols by channeling them to an atmospheric chamber where online detectors will monitor the production and growth of aerosols from VOC precursors.

Your profile

The postdoctoral candidate should hold a Ph.D. in chemistry or similar, with focus on atmospheric chemistry and chemical analysis.

The ideal candidate will have specific expertise in several of the following:
  • Spectrophotometric characterization of OM
  • Molecular analyses with HPLC-MS and GC-MS
  • Atmospheric simulation chamber experiments
  • Organizing and conducting fieldwork
  • Multivariate statistical expertise
  • R, Phyton, or similar statistical programming skills are highly desired
As this project seeks to truly bridge the aquatic, marine and atmospheric sciences, the candidate will not only need a strong chemistry background, but also a keen interest in ecology and Earth system science. Excellence in both written and spoken English is required. The candidate must have good collaboration skills and at the same time be able to take responsibility and work independently. The candidate should also be interested to co-supervise MSc students and collaborate with other groups inside and outside the university.

Place of work

The place of employment is the Department of Ecoscience, which is currently located on Vejlsøvej 25, 8600 Silkeborg, Denmark, but will move to the Campus of Aarhus University in Aarhus, C.F. Møllers Alle 4-8, 8000 Aarhus C, on 1 June 2022.
Furthermore, the majority of laboratory work is to be performed at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus, Denmark. The successful candidate will also be affiliated to the interdisciplinary Arctic Research Centre (ARC) in the Department of Biology, Ole Worms Allé 1, Aarhus, Denmark.

About the research group

The Department of Ecoscience (https://ecos.au.dk/en/) is organised under the Faculty of Technical Sciences and studies life in all respects. We teach, provide consultancy and research in life; right from bacteria to whales over genes to ecosystems and from basic research to applied biology in nature management and biotechnology. The Department has approximately 275 staff members, just over 100 working in Roskilde, and from 2022 nearly 175 in Aarhus. The applicant will join the Marine Ecology Section in the Department of Ecoscience and will work closely with the Department of Chemistry in Aarhus University (AU).

The project is in made in cooperation with the atmospheric chemistry groups of the Department of Chemistry, lead by Assoc. Prof. M. Glasius and Prof. M. Bilde.

The PI of the project, Dr. J. Holding, is a marine ecologist and biogeochemist, whose current research focuses on how OM released from the Greenland Ice Sheet impacts marine carbon cycling. She was recently funded to establish an interdisciplinary research group to expand beyond land–ocean interactions and incorporate interactions with the atmosphere as well.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
