Assistant professor position in biotechnology and breeding of crops

The green transition requires a shift towards more plant based diets and more sustainable production of feed for animals. To achieve this, future agricultural systems must deliver products of the highest nutritional quality. The amount and quality of protein in current crops is insufficient so innovation is needed. This opens up exciting new research possibilities within crop genetics and biotechnology aiming to develop new crop plants for protein production. To strengthen this area, Section for Crop Genetics and Biotechnology, Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, invites applications for a tenure track position with a focus on improvement of plant protein composition and yield for food and feed.

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and conducting experiments that should optimize crops to produce more and better proteins for food and feed. The developed projects should be seen in context of the whole value chain from crop production to food/feed consumption, with a focus on genetic traits of crop plants to optimize protein production. The candidate will join the Section for Crop Genetics and Biotechnology, which performs research in crops using methods within molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, genetic transformation and New Breeding Techniques.

The candidate will have the opportunity to develop an independent research portfolio within crop proteins and is expected to put crop proteins into the context of future challenges for food production. This involves activities to identify key genes and to develop technologies for accurate manipulation of multiple targets, rendering a route towards crops for the future. The successful candidate must also take part in teaching and supervision of students at BSc, MSc and PhD level.

The selected candidate is expected to:

  • Develop innovative research within the research area of plant proteins.
  • Experience with conventional- or novel protein crops will be an advantage.
  • Develop competitive grant proposals.
  • Contribute to teaching in plant breeding and biotechnology.
  • Contribute to advisory activities to Danish ministries and authorities.
  • Supervise Master and PhD level students.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree and post doc research experience within plant molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology.
  • Experience with plant proteins, preferably storage proteins.
  • Proven publication record in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in planning, implementing, managing and attracting funding for research projects.
  • Teaching experience at MSc level.
  • The ability to manage, participate, collaborate and communicate in interdisciplinary research, and to participate in joint projects with other scientists.
In addition to the above criteria, consideration will be given to innovative skills, the ability to communicate at all levels, such as the provision of research based policy support, the ability to promote and implement research results, an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience, and the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation. Furthermore, we are looking for a dedicated person who can contribute positively as a team player to our working environment.

Place of Work

The place of work is Aarhus University, Flakkebjerg, Forsøgsvej 1, 4200 Slagelse.  The affiliation will be with the Department of Agroecology.

For further information contact Professor Henrik Brinch-Pedersen, hbp@agro.au.dk.

Postdoc in Gentle and Sustainable Processing – Novel membrane filtration approaches

Will you contribute to develop more sustainable plant-based protein ingredients and accelerate the transition from animal- to plant-based food?

Department of Food Science, Section of Ingredients and Dairy Technology, invites applicants for a postdoc in Gentle and Sustainable Processing with the aim to study separation, purification and concentration of rapeseed proteins based on membrane filtration, with start 1/1-2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project

Research opportunities as PhD student and postdoc are now available in the ‘SEEDFOOD: Functional and palatable plant seed storage proteins for sustainable foods’ project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The primary partners in the project are University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and University of Le Mans in France (ULM) and positions are available at all partners. The project coordinator is Professor Marianne Nissen Lund, Department of Food Science, UCPH.

SEEDFOOD will serve as multi-disciplinary centre in which you as young scientist will benefit from training and joint supervision by principal investigators and we expect some mobility between labs. You will be part of a dynamic research environment based on knowledge sharing, high scientific ambitions and leverage of cross-disciplinary synergy. We will focus on active career development of junior researchers, and develop coaching/mentoring activities across the centre.

The vision of SEEDFOOD is to accelerate the transition from animal- to plant-based food proteins for sustainable food production and consumption. We will achieve this by tailoring plant protein ingredients with superior functional, palatable, and nutritional properties through novel protein design and in-depth understanding of molecular interactions in the food matrix.

We will use rapeseed protein to obtain new insights that provide the scientific foundation to promote the use of seed storage proteins for foods. Rapeseed is a protein-rich crop used for industrial oil production, it is farmed on a large scale in Europe and may be utilized in new food types locally across the globe. In SEEDFOOD we will create knowledge to transform poor functionality of plant seed storage proteins to rationally and sustainably tailor protein performance for future food design.

Scientific themes in SEEDFOOD encompass: gentle and sustainable processing to extract, isolate and fractionate proteins; improvement of protein surface characteristics through enzyme and UV-light treatments; biophysical protein interactions; mechanistic analyses of molecular interactions; functionality and palatability in model foods.

We are seeking a postdoc for a 3-year position, with possibility to extension, to study separation and concentration technologies based on membrane filtration with start 1/1-2022 or as soon thereafter.

Tasks:

  • Understand interactions between rapeseed proteins and membrane surfaces
  • Develop novel separation methods for cruciferin and napin based on membrane filtration

Post doc in Condensed Matter Theory

The department of Physics, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen is offering a 2-year post doc position in condensed matter theory starting 1 March 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The project will be funded by a grant from the Villum Foundation. The position is part of the research group led by Brian. M. Andersen, embedded in the larger condensed matter theory group at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. Significant collaboration is expected to take place with other local researchers, including Prof. K. Flensberg, J. Paaske, A. T. Rømer, M. H. Christensen (NBI), and international collaborators including T. Berlijn, I. Eremin, R. M. Fernandes, P. J. Hirschfeld, A. Kreisel, R. Valentì, and several experimental groups. For further information on the condensed matter theory group at the University of Copenhagen, please visit http://cmt.nbi.ku.dk.

Project-description
The overarching goal of the project is to obtain new fundamental insight into the origin of emergent quantum phases in timely correlated materials. This includes studies of correlation-induced nontrivial topological phases, spin- and valley-polarized states and unconventional superconductivity in correlated materials, including, for example, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, cuprates, kagome metals, and iron-based superconductors. In addition, we will explore the experimental consequences of the various relevant correlation-induced phases, and collaborate closely with experimental groups to test for new predictions by theory.

The postdoc’s duties will include research within condensed matter theory as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Further information on the Department is linked at https://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Inquiries about the position can be made to the head of the institute: Prof. Jan.
