Sustainable Bioproducts lnnovation

We seek for an ambitious and enthusiastic professor in Bioproducts Innovation with a strong focus on renewable materials, sustainable design, and circular economy.

Through a unique EUR 10.5 million grant by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation Aalto University is establishing a Bioinnovation Centre with the aim to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy, and to create opportunities for sustainable economic growth in Finland. Solving today’s and tomorrow’s challenges of sustainable product development based on renewable materials requires a multidisciplinary expertise and holistic understanding of the bioinnovation concept in the context of circular economy. Aalto University is setting up an interdisciplinary doctoral program using the viewpoints of technology, design and business to address these challenges. The Bioinnovation Centre will be a multi- and interdisciplinary research and learning centre to provide Finland and the world with the most recent research knowledge in its field, top-class experts as well as product and service concepts that combine innovative design and technology with business modelling in a sustainable manner.

We are now looking for a professor with strong expertise in materials research and circular economy, and the ability and motivation to network with stakeholders such as experts in the field of bio- and circular economy and creative industries, large companies and start-ups.

The position will be filled at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level of the Aalto University tenure track system. The contract is full-time and either fixed-term or permanent depending on its positioning on the tenure track.

Requirements

  • You have experience in research on sustainable bioproducts that involves users and business
  • You show clear capability for interdisciplinary research, possibly with experience in the transition of research to commercialization
  • Excellence in own field (technology, design, or business) and success in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Evidence of motivation and capability to create and sustain an encouraging research environment for inventions and innovations through disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Capability to create collaboratively new interdisciplinary research with practice-relevant impact in bioinnovation in the context of circular economy
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field

  • Enhance the research and teaching that fosters the concept of true interdisciplinarity envisioned by the Bioinnovation Centre rather than just your own research agenda
  • Take an active role in the Bioinnovation Centre doctoral school
  • Strengthen the collaboration between Aalto University’s fields (technology, design, and business) related to biobased materials
  • Promote and develop collaboration between Aalto University and external stakeholders together with the Bioinnovation Centre community
  • Supervise master and doctoral students

Experience and ambitions

We are eagerly looking for a candidate, whose research interest focuses on the practices that could release the interdisciplinary potential in bioinnovation development from research ideation to commercialization. Your research publications preferably demonstrate a strong focus on bioinnovation in the context of circular economy and sustainability and show evidence of your ability to translate scientific research to practical level solutions. As an ideal candidate, you have a track record showing cooperation with company partners and wide understanding and demonstrated capability to cooperate with various stakeholders.

Doctoral Candidate position in Sustainable Pavement Materials

 


Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a doctoral student position in Sustainable Pavement Materials.

The Mineral Based Materials and Mechanics research group is seeking a highly motivated and creative doctoral student who will work on pavement engineering research. Specifically, the student will work on innovative asphalt binder and mixture for multi recycling techniques of asphalt pavements. The research includes additives and admixtures, such as recycling asphalt, agents, adhesion promoters, fibers, and other marginal materials such as steel slag and asphalt rubber. The main tasks of the Ph.D. students consist of a combination of laboratory experimentation, data analysis, numerical simulations, and modeling.

The selected individual will work under the supervision of Augusto Cannone Falchetto, together with the current postdocs and laboratory team in pavement engineering. The successful applicant will have the possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers and attend scientific conferences and meetings.

The doctoral studies at Aalto take approximately four years. The doctoral degree is granted after writing and publicly defending a doctoral thesis (typically based on a student's publications).

The position is expected to start as early as 10.01.2022 or soon after.

Requirements:

  • Master degree  - preferably in Civil, Materials, and Chemical Engineering or closely related fields, though candidates with different backgrounds such as Physics and Mathematics are encouraged to apply

Financing, duration, and salary

Aalto University applies the salary system of Finnish universities. Currently, the starting salary for doctoral students is slightly above 2500€ per month and is increased with the progress towards the doctoral degree to over 3100€ per month. The position is contract-based. The financing is subject to the availability of funding.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the research group of Kaie Kubjas. The position is part of the Academy of Finland project “Algebraic geometry of hidden variable models in statistics”. The position is for one year with the starting date on September 1st, 2022.

Requirements

We look for scholars who are completing, or have completed within the past 5 years, their doctoral studies in a relevant field of study. The candidates are required to have a strong mathematical background in applied algebra, algebraic statistics, algebraic geometry, discrete geometry, mathematics of machine learning, polynomial optimization or a related field. The candidate should also have strong interest in learning statistics or biology, however no background in these fields is necessary. The position requires fluent skills in the English language.

The expected starting salary is approximately 3700 €/month. The contract includes occupational health care benefits and a holiday bonus. The position comes with no teaching duties, but there is the possibility to teach an advanced course.
