Project description
We are advertising a 3-year postdoctoral fellow position, to work with Dr. Jon E. Gudmundsson on a project in cryogenic optics funded by an ERC Starting Grant. The CMBeam program involves aspects in optical instrumentation, simulation, and analysis for experiments studying the cosmic microwave background, including the Simons Observatory, the LiteBIRD satellite, and the Taurus balloon-borne experiment.

The principal aim of CMBeam is to advance aspects of cryogenic optics for millimetre wavelengths. Efforts include the construction of a state-of-the-art cryogenic holography facility for the purposes of testing optical systems of current and future experiments. This infrastructure will facilitate calibration efforts for upcoming CMB experiments such as the Simons Observatory and enable the development of optical measurement techniques that are critical for next-generation experiments.

The successful candidate will be part of the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics (www.okc.albanova.se) in Stockholm, a rich scientific environment that comprises more than a hundred researchers working in both theory and experiment in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and particle physics at both Stockholm University and the Royal Institute for Technology. The OKC hosts a vibrant research program on dark matter, dark energy, transient and multimessenger astrophysics, galaxy evolution, structure formation, and related particle physics questions. Postdoctoral associates are also welcome to participate in Scientific Programs at Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods.

Main responsibilities
CMBeam involves development of novel techniques in cryogenic optics. This can be broken down into tasks that require expertise in mechanical design, optics, cryogenics, readout, and RF circuit design. The candidate, together with the PI, will lead the design of an anechoic chamber and custom cryostat that facilitates the testing of quasi-optical systems for future CMB experiments. Using lab measurements enabled by this facility, the candidate is also expected to lead calibration work for upcoming CMB experiments.

Other daily responsibilities include active participation in group meetings and mentoring of PhD students. The successful candidate is also encouraged to actively contribute to the lively academic environment at the OKC.

PhD position in Neurolinguistics

Applications are invited for a PhD candidate in the area of neurolinguistics and clinical linguistics.
This position is embedded in the NWO-funded VIDI project of Dr Vânia de Aguiar “Verb processing and verb learning in children with pediatric posterior fossa tumors (PPFTs)”.

The project characterizes verb processing and verb learning abilities of children with PPFTs, and compares them to the abilities of typically developing children (aim 1). In addition, neural correlates of language abilities will be studied (aim 2), while studying the effects of proton radiotherapy on language ability, as well as the relationship between changes in language and neuroanatomical changes during and after the proton therapy treatment (aim 3). Children with PPFTs will be tested from 2-3 weeks after surgery. Verb processing and learning ability will be studied in the context of various levels of syntactic (concerning grammar) and semantic (concerning meaning) complexity. This will make it possible to identify difficulties with syntax and semantics and to document their impact on verb learning.

The selected PhD candidate will conduct language assessments of children starting from 2-3 weeks after surgery up until 2 years after surgery, and will gather and analyze structural T1 MRI and diffusion MRI scans. This project entails a collaboration between the University of Groningen, the University Medical Center Groningen, and the Princes Máxima Center in Utrecht.

Qualifications

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic student with a Master degree in clinical linguistics, neurolinguistics, speech-language pathology, or psychology. Candidates who expect to obtain their degree before September 2022 are also eligible, and may be offered a position conditional upon successful completion of the Master degree.

Previous experience in administering and interpreting diagnostic tests for language assessment in children is mandatory. This may be documented via a BAPD testing license, or by clinical internships (in which case, it is recommended that the internship supervisor writes one of the recommendation letters).

Experience with scripting (R/Matlab/Python) is desirable, but not essential.

Native or native-like command of the Dutch language is mandatory, because data collection and language diagnostics with children will have to be conducted in Dutch.

Furthermore, an excellent knowledge of English and good academic writing skills are essential.

PhD position Environmental History Niger Delta

Specialty areas: contemporary history, African history (Nigeria), environmental history, cultural and political responses to resource extraction

Applications are invited for a fully funded, four-year PhD position within the research project Environmental Histories of Resource Extraction in Africa: Understanding Cultural and Political Responses to Environmental Transformation, financed by the European Research Council (ERC) and led by Dr Iva Peša.

Through a comparative study of three African localities of resource extraction (oil drilling in Nigeria; copper mining in Zambia; gold mining in South Africa), focusing on the period 1950-2020, this project aims to analyse and explain the diversity of cultural and political responses to environmental transformation. The PhD candidate will conduct an in-depth case study in the Niger Delta (to be discussed, this may include the oil refinery in Alesa Eleme or the 1970 oil spill in Ejama Ebubu and its aftermath). This PhD project will involve a research stay in the Niger Delta of c. 9 months. Using oral history, archives, popular literature (novels and poems), and songs, the PhD candidate will examine lived experiences of environmental transformation caused by oil extraction. The motivation of this project is to understand when, how, and why environmentalism found expression in African localities of resource extraction.

The discovery of oil in the Niger Delta in 1956 precipitated massive oil spills, violent conflict over oil revenues, and vocal environmental protest movements. This project aims to historicise these environmental conflicts and to understand why people reacted differently to environmental change. The PhD candidate will be part of a larger team (PI, PhD student on South Africa, and two post-doctoral researchers who will join the project in 2023), collaborating closely with the University of Port Harcourt and local partners.

This PhD project offers a unique opportunity to work in an international research environment as well as to acquire valuable teaching experience (to be discussed). In addition, the PhD candidate will collaborate with the other team members to organise conferences and workshops, and to plan outreach activities.

For additional queries regarding the project and if you would like to get access to the full project proposal, please get in touch with the project’s PI, Dr Iva Peša: i.pesa@rug.nl

PhD in Modeling Structures of Human Cognition

Explorations of the structure of human cognition often take one of two approaches: a top down view that builds models based upon high level theoretical architectures and compares the performance of these models with observed human behavior, or a bottom up view that attempts to derive structures through the analysis of low level brain imaging signals. Though these methods are often pursued separately, some attempts have been made to combine the two approaches, analyzing signals from brain imaging data through the framework of high level architectural model structures. The Common Model of Cognition (CMC), a consensus model drawn from decades of work in functional cognitive architectures, has been found to provide a reasonable account of brain activity in a variety of tasks and at rest. The success of the CMC is encouraging evidence for the presence of a singular underlying framework that drives cognition, as well as giving strong indications of structural features likely present in the brain. However, the CMC is, by design, a very simple account of cognition, consisting of only five high level cognitive components (Perception, Action, Working Memory, Procedural Memory, and Long Term Memory), each of which likely contains multiple networks of lower level components that contribute to cognition.

The goal of this project is to extend the methods of previous research involving the Common Model, by increasing the complexity of the model's network framework to include components that represent more specific cognitive functions. Perception, for example, can take multiple forms, primarily auditory and visual, but the current configuration of the CMC treats all perceptual activity as the same. Comparing this original model framework with one that separates the visual and auditory perceptual signals and allows them to interact with the rest of the network individually could provide valuable insight into how perceptual inputs are processed, and how that information interacts with the rest of the components in the brain’s network model. The sparse nature of the original CMC model provides myriad opportunities to explore these kinds of distinctions in all five of the basic high level components, ultimately providing a more complete picture of the shape and structure of cognitive processes within the brain.

In this project we will:

  • Develop and refine a data analysis pipeline to accommodate the comparison of multiple model configurations
  • Identify and localize component networks within the larger CMC components; visual perception and auditory perception within the general CMC Perception component, for example
  • Formulate comparison metrics of alternate model structures, and explore the implications of differences in model performance

The objective of the temporary position is the production of a number of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings, which together will form the basis of a thesis leading to a PhD degree (Dr) at the the University of Groningen.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should have:

  • A MSc in the field of psychology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, or a related field
  • Experience with programming, ideally in Python, Matlab, and/or R
  • A high proficiency in English, and excellent communication skills, both written and spoken

The project will consist of a combination of organizing and handling a large data set, performing basic analysis of brain imaging data, building and troubleshooting models of cognitive structure, and performing statistical analysis of the model outputs. Expertise in each of these areas is not a requirement, but some basic experience in similar areas and/or a motivated interest in one or more of the project components is helpful.

PhD position in Probability theory with applications in epidemiology

In recent years mathematical models for epidemics and pandemics have, for obvious reasons, received much attention. Both strengths and weaknesses have been revealed, leading to important challenges for mathematical modelers. Examples of those challenges are to extend existing toy models for epidemics, to include contact tracing, behavioral change in response to epidemics and seasonality.

We seek a PhD student to work with Dr. Pieter Trapman on stochastic models for the spread of infectious diseases. The subject of the PhD project is to develop, extend and rigorously analyse probabilistic models and theory for this spread. This will likely involve branching processes, random graphs, percolation theory and interacting particle systems.

The objective of the temporary position is the production of a number of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, which together will form the basis of a thesis leading to a PhD degree (Dr.) at the University of Groningen.

The successful candidate should start the position in the fall of 2022 (Earliest September 1).

Qualifications

The successful candidate should:

  • have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Mathematics or another field of science relevant for the position
  • have good command of English (oral and written)
  • be enthusiastic and have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team, have a passion for science, be highly motivated to work in probability theory and communicate with public health researchers on formulation of problems and their solutions, possess excellent communication skills and an affinity for writing scientific papers and delivering presentations
  • in addition to these general qualifications, specific research projects may require specific qualifications, to be discussed with the intended supervisors.

The Center of Expertise HRM&OB, part of the Organizational Behavior (OB) group of the Faculty Economics and Business at the University of Groningen, is looking for an ambitious postdoctoral researcher with ample experience with survey research and quantitative data analysis.

The OB group aspires to promote a basic understanding of individual and group behavior and the translation of scientific research into practical implications that have significant corporate value.
