Assistant Professor in Climate Adaptation and Aquatic Nature-based Solutions

The Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a three-year position as assistant professor within the field of climate adaptation. The position is available from August 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline: 7 June 2022.

The Department of Biology covers biology in a broad sense including ecology, ecotoxicology, bioacoustics, physiology, biodemography, biogeochemistry and earth evolution. We welcome applicants who are prepared to participate in the cross-disciplinary cooperation at the department. The successful applicant is expected to have a research background within climate adaptation (effects, methods, management, aquatic nature based solutions and synergies with climate mitigation, improvement of water quality and biodiversity) and a background within biology, environmental engineering or similar. The applicant will be part of the Ecology group.

The position involves teaching responsibilities in the Danish one-year Master (akademisk overbygningsuddannelse) of Climate Adaptation as well as supervision at bachelor and master level. Therefore, teaching experience within climate adaptation (effects and methods), GIS, project management or project communication related to climate adaptation will be seen as an advantage. The applicant will also be involved in a variety of tasks related to general university services.

The successful applicant will participate in research projects concerning nature-based solutions, nutrient reduction, and climate adaptation/mitigation in the catchment to Odense Fjord as a part of the Odense Fjord Consortia (OFC). OFC is a demonstration setup with Odense Fjord as the demonstration site consisting of all the main players around Odense Fjord (municipalities, utility companies, industries, trade organizations, NGO’s and knowledge institutions). The very ambitious aim of this consortia is to achieve a good ecological condition in Odense Fjord by 2027 plus implementation of climate mitigation aims despite a currently bad condition in the fjord. One challenge is a huge catchment (one third of Funen) discharging water, nutrients and xenobiotics into the fjord plus huge climate related challenges both in the fjord and in the catchment and an impoverished biodiversity.

Appointment as assistant professor presupposes scientific qualifications corresponding to the requirements of this position at university level. The applicant is expected to hold a PhD degree, demonstrate scientific innovation and excellence, publish research outcomes through a number of international peer-reviewed publications, have funding, teaching and supervision experience.

The successful candidate should be willing to complete postgraduate teacher training for assistant professors at SDU if not already achieved and participate in communication to the public – eventually also participate in Citizen Science activities.

The successful candidate will be supported with access to a well-developed research infrastructure, laboratory space, shared equipment, and access to modern core facilities, such as imaging and computational facilities, as well as a research climate of lively, open, and critical academic discussion within and across different fields of research and a network among other young excellent scientists.

Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.

Questions can be directed to Associate Professor Sara Egemose (saege@biology.sdu.dk ) or Head of Department Gary Banta (banta@biology.sdu.dk).

Postdoc Position in Federated Multi-OMICS Machine Learning

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark for the Computational Biology laboratory chaired by Associate Professor Richard Röttger invites applications for a postdoctoral position within the field of federated machine learning and AI to be filled by 1 July 2022, or soon thereafter, for a period of 18 months. Application deadline: 16 June 2022.

The research is part of a large European effort, FeatureCloud, to establish privacy-aware federated machine learning approaches to enable the mining of distributed, sensitive data. Currently, one major roadblock of biomedical research is that the valuable data is scattered around the globe and sharing and consolidating data is simply not possible due to privacy concerns. With FeatureCloud, we are seeking to elevate this prohibitive problem by allowing federated machine learning, i.e. we leave the data in the safe harbour of storage and train local models at the sites; thereafter only the model parameters are consolidated in a central instance to create a model of similar capabilities as a conventional model trained on all the available data.

The successful candidate will develop novel approaches for federated machine learning of systems medicine and multi-OMICS data in particular. The candidate will be embedded in a highly international and powerful consortium as a member of the Computational Biology group which offers a wide expertise in machine learning on biomedical data, both in the realm of unsupervised and supervised learning. We also provide the candidate with direct access to state-of-the-art computing facilities optimized for deep learning and distributed computing.

We are seeking outstanding candidates with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, who are strong in written and oral communication (in English), and have documented experience in data science, machine learning and software development of complex systems. Expertise in the analysis of biological data is an advantage, but not a requirement. Expertise in computer security and data privacy are welcome, but not required.

Place of work:
Computational Biology Group (Associate Professor Richard Röttger, roettger@imada.sdu.dk), Department of Mathematics and Computer Science located at the main campus of the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Application, salary etc.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

Application must be made in the form of a Declaration of Interest and must include the following documents:
1. Letter of motivation and proposed project description, outlining the candidates ideas of how to approach the project (max. two pages).
2. Curriculum vitae, including information on previous employment, list of programming skills mastered by the applicant, and teaching and supervision experience.
3. A list of publications stating the scientific publication(s) on which the applicant wishes to rely (if available).
4. A certified copy of your PhD degree certificate.
5. At least one letter of recommendation from supervisors or previous employers.

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
