Description

The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for one full-time post-doctoral research fellow in Biology at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences in the field of Ecological Modelling, with a focus on individual-based modelling of stream fish populations in hydropower-regulated rivers.

The River Ecology and Management Research Group (RivEM), a research environment within the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at Karlstad University, conducts both basic and applied research in and along rivers and lakes and their surrounding landscapes. The research group is interested in the sustainable use of natural resources in watersheds, working for solutions to environmental problems that benefit both society and nature. Areas of research addressed by RivEM include river connectivity and the effects of hydropower, aquatic- terrestrial interactions and habitats, winter ecology under global climate change, endangered species such as unionid mussels, conservation biology and social-ecological research relating to river regulation and recreational fishing (https://www.kau.se/en/biologyhttp://www.nrrv.se). Within many of these topics, research is conducted in collaboration with stakeholders from industry, administrative agencies, interest organizations and landowners.

Duties

Hydroelectric power is a key means of transforming to a fossil-free society, but damming of rivers for hydropower has also been a major driver of declines in aquatic biodiversity. This project will focus on developing ways to protect and restore stream habitat for salmonid fishes in hydropower-regulated rivers.

The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced individual-based models (IBMs) for Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and European grayling under various river management scenarios. Research will be conducted in collaboration with stakeholders from hydropower, county administration and municipalities, and NGOs. The applicant is expected to be active at the university and participate in the research environment.

The position may include 20 % teaching or other academic duties in the Department.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the postdoctoral appointment, applicants are required to hold a PhD (or to be completed before the decision about the employment is taken) in in ecology, related fields for the appointment or have equivalent qualifications achieved abroad. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the application deadline.

Qualifications obtained earlier may be considered if there are special grounds, such as sick leave, parental leave, clinical service, service as a union representative, or similar.

Assessment criteria

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with experience in aquatic ecology and ecological modelling.

In the selection process, special weight will be given to the applicant's research skills, as demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s PhD thesis, published scientific articles and other scientific merits. Special weight will also be given to the applicant’s knowledge in ecological modelling.

In the selection process, considerable weight will be given to the applicant's scientific experience in individual based modelling, geographic information systems (GIS) and hydraulic modelling. Considerable weight will also be given to the ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues, as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiatives.

Weight will be given to the applicant's interest and knowledge salmonid ecology. Weight will also be given to the experience of collaborating with stakeholders and communicating research.

Completed pedagogical education is a merit, as well as a driver’s license as some practical work will be performed in the field.

Terms

The position is a full-time employment for 24 months, starting on Jaunary 2, 2023, or by agreement between the applicant and the employer. An extension of one year is possibile depending upon funding availability.

Description

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology invites applications for four doctoral studentships in Computer Science with a focus on data driven mobile networks and services at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Computer Science has received funding from the Knowledge Foundation of Sweden for a research profile on data-driven latency-sensitive mobile services for a digitalized society (DRIVE).  The profile is an eight-year 130 MSEK effort that will be run in close collaboration with our industrial partners Ericsson, Icomera, Mullvad, Telia, TietoEvry and Varnish.

DRIVE will be launched in the fall and we are now looking to recruit four new PhD students to strengthen our team and start up work in the profile.

Duties

Main duties are to contribute to research and development within the DRIVE research profile. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with other researchers at the department and our industrial partners. Depending on the interest and skills of the applicant, the research work may be focused in one of several related areas. We will to recruit one student each in the following areas:

  • How to use network programmability frameworks and languages such as P4 to accelerate packet processing functions for providing flexible, QoS-enabled, and scalable connectivity in next-generation mobile networks (Area 1).
  • How to design data- and service-driven solutions that can facilitate adaptive and latency-aware communication in beyond 5G/6G mobile networks (Area 2).
  • How to model various parts of multi-tier computation platforms, and design scalable latency-aware AI/ML-based optimization solutions for service provisioning along the cloud continuum (i.e., IoT-Edge-Cloud platforms) (Area 3).
  • How to measure and analyze end-to-end latency performance to gain insights on the integrated performance of DRIVE solutions, and data analytics for current and future 5G/6G networks (Area 4).

A doctoral student is mainly expected to engage in doctoral studies. The doctoral programme consists of 240 higher education credits, including the doctoral thesis, and 120 higher education credits for a degree of licentiate. A doctoral student works independently and is prepared to contribute to the subject’s and department’s activities, as well as perform teaching and administration duties. Such duties may not constitute more than 20% of full-time.

To contribute to a positive work environment and the department’s activities, the doctoral student will be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Professor of Media and Communication Studies

Media and Communication Studies is part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with an inviting learning and research environment. Interdisciplinary cooperation and global perspectives are essential to our work. The department offers several bachelor’s programmes, as well as a master’s program. Bachelor studies are primarily conducted in our two major study programmes, Public Relations and Media and Communication. The latter features the two specialisations Visual Communication and Design and Digital Media and Analysis. Our master’s programme is the international two-year programme Geomedia Studies: Media, Mobility and Spatial Planning. The subject also conducts research education.

Research in Media and Communication Studies is conducted in two profiled research environments connected to the department: the interdisciplinary research centre Geomedia (Centre for Geomedia Studies) http://www.kau.se/geomedia/ and NODE (The Ander Centre for Research on News and Opinion in the Digital Era) https://www.kau.se/media/node. Geomedia examines the importance of media in organising and providing meaning to spaces and places—and vice versa—with an emphasis on tourism, personal life, working life and popular culture. NODE’s research examines the practices, social functions and audiences of journalism in a digital and fragmented age. Together, Geomedia and NODE form a strong, dynamic and well-integrated foundation for the research conducted within Media and Communication Studies. In later years, our research has been very successful, receiving several international awards and rankings. The research environment has an international approach, in combination with a strong sense of collegiality.

Read about the university at: https://www.kau.se/en/ and more about the subject at: www.kau.se/en/media-and-communication-studies.
