Postdoc in detection and quantification of fugitive emissions

DTU Sustains section Climate and Monitoring offers a 2½-year position as a post-doctoral fellow in detection and quantification of fugitive emissions with focus on direct emissions of greenhouse gases.

You will be a part of a larger project (KhaosGuard – Innovations in remote sensing for better measurement of greenhouse gas emissions), which is a collaboration with DTU Fotonik, manufacturers of laser products, leading providers of gas measurement services and consultants with a global outreach.

The problem addressed is direct emissions of greenhouse gases from industries, utilities, agriculture etc. Minimizing those emissions is of great importance in the effort to mitigate climate change. To minimize direct emissions, accurate and cost-effective measurement methods and instrumentations are needed to asses emissions from various processes, components etc. and to inform facilities in case of defects, which cause increased emissions. We will develop and test both vehicle-based, drone-based and fence-line monitoring applications of laser detection of gaseous emissions from various sources.

KhaosGuard is a 4-year project supported by Innovation Fund Denmark’s Grand Solutions program. The project so far has been in a development phase. You will enter the project in the beginning of the testing phase, where we will conduct the first tests at different facilities such as wastewater treatment plants.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The successful candidate will develop, test and apply our measurement systems as part of a team at DTU Sustain of senior scientists and technicians, other young scientists and PhD students. You will collaborate with another, similar team at DTU Fotonik who are developing the equipment used. Your user feedback is key in the development of measurement methods. The field research requires mobility and work at various locations in Denmark and possibly elsewhere. Scientific programming (for example using R and/or Python) will be needed for process automation for organisation of the data streams and post-processing chains.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

PhD position in Mode Conversion of Quantum State

The Fiber Optics, Devices and Nonlinear Effects group at DTU Electro at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a PhD position to research conversion between different modes in multi-mode optical fibers for application in classical as well as quantum communication.

The PhD student will participate in an international team in an EU-funded Doctoral Network project called HOMTech. The project consists of 10 PhD students at 6 universities and one company. The project has partners from five different EU countries. All, 10 PhD projects are within the overall theme of higher order modes in optical fibers for application in telecommunication, optical sensing, and imaging.

This Ph.D. project will take place at DTU Electro. Apart from the time at DTU there will be secondments of minimum 3 months at Technical University Eindhoven and at Bell Labs in New Jersey, USA. There will also be common meetings with the other 9 Ph.D. students in the doctoral network, including 5 training schools.

As a participant of the project, the PhD student will become part of a team at DTU with expertise in characterization, application and design of optical fibers supporting higher order modes. The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. The main supervisor will be Professor Karsten Rottwitt, DTU Electro.

Responsibilities and tasks
Many recent advances within optical communication systems, based on classical optical signal or quantum states, have taken advantage of multiple optical transverse modes, and multi-mode optical fibers. Examples include few mode fibers and photonic lanterns for classical communication and applications of modes carrying orbital angular momentum for transmission of high dimensional quantum states. However, application of multi-mode optics comes at the expense of being able to convert between various spatial modes. This mode conversion is currently achieved for example through the use of spatial light modulators or long period fiber gratings. Alternatively, conversion between different modes may also be achieved through the use of nonlinear effects as for example intermodal four wave mixing in multi-mode optical fibers.

Based on theoretical modeling and experimental investigations, this project aims at getting an in-depth understanding of mode conversion between various modes in multi-mode optical fibers and research the impact on for example quantum states in a quantum optical signal due to a non-ideal mode conversion. The project will among others consist of the following tasks:

  • Research and evaluation of mode conversion between spatial modes each carrying optical signals. This should include characterization of detrimental effects. One of the methods to investigate should rely on intermodal four wave mixing
  • Predict and characterize mode conversion of classical and quantum states using a chosen optimized mode conversion schemes.
  • Demonstration of application of optimized mode converter in a classical and/or quantum communication system.

PhD position in Effects of Higher Order Modes on Optical Fiber Amplifiers and Lasers

The Fiber Optics, Devices and Nonlinear Effects group at DTU Electro at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a PhD to explore the effect of higher order modes in optical fiber amplifiers and lasers. You will participate in an international team in an EU-funded Doctoral Network project called HOMTech. The project consists of 10 Ph.d. students at 6 universities and one company in 5 different EU countries. All, 10 Ph.d. projects are within the overall theme of higher order modes in optical fibers for application in telecommunication, optical sensing, and imaging. This Ph.D. project will take place at DTU Electro in close collaboration with OFS Denmark (https://www.ofsoptics.com/). Apart from the time at DTU there will be secondments of minimum 3 months at OFS in Denmark and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. There will also be common meetings with the other 9 Ph.D. students in the doctoral network, including 5 training schools.

You will become part of a team at DTU with expertise in characterization, application and design of optical fibers supporting higher order modes. The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. OFS Denmark is a world leading manufacturer of rare earth doped amplifier fibers as well as other specialty fibers and advanced transmission fibers. OFS will provide guidance and various fibers available for the project. The main supervisor will be Professor Karsten Rottwitt, Dr. Lars Grüner-Nielsen, DTU Electro, and Dr. Poul Kristensen, OFS Denmark will be co-supervisors.

Responsibilities and tasks
Optical amplifier and lasers are based on use of a short length (typically 1-10 meter) of a fiber doped with a rare earth material such as Erbium, Ytterbium or Thulium. The preferred rare earth material depends on the wavelength range where amplification is needed. Current doped fiber designs are strongly restricted by the general requirement to the fiber to guide only one mode at both the pump and signal wavelengths. The possibility to loosen this requirement and allow for guidance of one or more higher order modes at the pump wavelength and maybe even at the signal wavelength would open for new doped fiber designs with much improved properties. However, the effect of allowing higher order modes to be guided in the amplifier fiber is not well understood. Based on theoretical modeling and experimental investigations, this project aims at getting a deeper understanding on possible decremental effects of higher order modes and means to counteract these effects. The project will among others consist of the following:

  • Characterize higher order mode content and properties in rare earth doped fibers.
  • Characterize effect of higher order modes in rare earth doped fibers in amplifier and laser applications. For example, effect on power conversion efficiency gain and noise properties.
  • Modeling of effect of higher order modes and rare earth doped fibers and lasers.
  • Design of improved rare earth doped fibers.
