PhD Researcher Global Groundwater Sustainability

 Are you interested in global water and sustainability challenges related to both water quantity and quality? Do you want to work with large scale numerical models? This PhD position might be what you are looking for!

The demand for water is increasing due to population growth and socio-economic development. At the same time water availability is changing due to climate change, overextraction of ground and surface water, and water pollution. To examine these issues, this PhD project will address the question: will there be enough clean groundwater to satisfy human and environmental demands?  The PhD candidate will do an in-depth assessment of impacts and limitations of current and future groundwater use, considering both water quantity and quality criteria.

Your main task will be to integrate the water quantity and quality modelling approaches currently used in the Water Systems and Global Change Group. You will develop a water quality component into the coupled VIC-WOFOST-MODFLOW model that is currently being developed at our research group. Using the model, you will assess the impact of human water use on groundwater availability and quality. In addition, you will do in depth assessments of the trade-offs between saving enough groundwater to maintain healthy terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and other water uses and provide solutions to reduce and prevent negative environmental impacts of groundwater use now and in the future.

Your qualities

  • A completed (or about to be completed) MSc degree in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, or related field;
  • An interest in and knowledge of water quantity and quality;
  • Interested in working on global water and sustainability problems;
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with large datasets and large-scale numerical modelling in context of global change;
  • Experience with or willingness to learn scripting and programming (e.g., Python, R, C++);
  • Affinity for working with numerical modelling
  • Willingness to work in multidisciplinary teams;
For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level. Sometimes it is necessary to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. More information can be found here.

PhD position: Exploring the contribution of social and organizational solutions to enable a transition towards ecology-based mixed cropping systems in the Netherlands

 An enthusiast and ambitious researcher who wants to investigate how we can develop and test new market rules, policy options and/or organisational arrangements as part of socio-technical innovation packages.  Do you like to do action-oriented research that helps us to reconfigure ‘the rules of the game’ as part of sustainability transitions?

The research programme CropMix is a Dutch Research Agenda initiative of a large interdisciplinary research team joining forces with the agricultural sector to achieve a breakthrough in the transition to sustainable arable farming. We study how crop diversity in the field can benefit from and enhance ecological processes, among others to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilisation. CropMix also investigates which societal and institutional changes in the food system are needed to enable and accelerate the transition to sustainable mixed crop production. This is done by setting up three living labs for a diversity of potential transition paths, such as short local chains, organic farming or adaptation of existing national and international value chains. In these living labs the diverse stakeholders will explore common ground in order to re-evaluate the research agenda and undertake joint actions.
The goal of this PhD project is to create insight in social and institutional options and leverages that may help to overcome constraints to the use of crop-mixtures, and to explore methods through which the contribution of novel policy options, market arrangements or organisational solutions can be tested in the context of living labs.

The two more specific aims are:

  • To understand how farmer-level application of crop-mixtures is dependent on changes in the broader (farm, value-chain and policy) environment, and where leverages can be found to induce system-level change.
  • To understand and support experimentation with institutional options in living labs and assess their potential to support a shift towards using crop-mixtures.

Your qualities

We are looking for a talented, curious and engaged researcher, with:

  • A MSc degree in a relevant social-scientific field and a broad and interdisciplinary interest
  • Strong interest in and relevant knowledge on agricultural innovations and sustainability transitions
  • Strong interest in and relevant knowledge on a qualitative, quantitative and participatory research methods and data analysis approaches
  • Interest in transdisciplinary collaboration and action-oriented research and proven skills of facilitating interaction
  • Excellent analytical skills and conceptual understanding
  • Strong communicative, collaboration, networking and writing skills, with a proven track record
  • Good knowledge of English language, in listening, speaking and writing (OOPT score C1 or C2)
  • Preferably Dutch speaking
Preferably 0,8 fte: 1 July 2023 – 1 July 2028. (1,0 fte is negotiable)

PhD Position for in the NWA project 'Transition towards a sustainable food system' and the EU4Advice project on food system transformation through short food supply chains

 Are you passionate to contribute to a sustainable transformation of the Dutch food system and are you particularly intrigued by the role of consumption therein? We offer a PhD position that departs from an everyday life perspective to develop future scenarios for inclusive food system transformation.

The current ways of producing and consuming food come with major social costs. Making food production more sustainable is not enough; a fundamental transition of the food system as a whole is needed. This  importantly includes our everyday food consumption practices. Embedded in the NWA project ‘Transition towards a sustainable food system’ and the EU4Advice project on food system transformation through short food supply chains, this PhD project explores how food system transformation occurs in and through everyday food consumption practices.

Real transformation requires a change in ordinary consumption practices, or, in other words  ‘a new normal’. But what could be such a new normal?  How do citizens with divergent lifestyles, across urban and rural regions, across generations, and with diverse cultural backgrounds envision the future ‘normal’ in food consumption?  How does this relate to their contextual settings? And how can normalization and de-normalization of consumption practices achieved in relation to the sustainability transformation?  Can we be normative in what should be normal practice? How does a new normal relate to notions of affluence and sufficiency in food consumption? With these questions the PhD project aims to inform inclusive and effective governance pathways in advancing toward inclusive, health enhancing sustainable food systems.

The PhD researcher will collaborate with a PostDoc researcher and is supervised by Dr Sigrid Wertheim-Heck from the Environmental Policy group and Dr Hilje van der Horst from the Consumption and Healthy Lifestyles group at Wageningen University. The PhD is positioned at the Environmental Policy Group in close collaboration with the Consumption and Healthy Lifestyles Group, both part of the Wageningen Centre of Sustainability Governance.

Your qualities

  • You have a MSc or MA in social sciences (e.g. sociology, anthropology, human geography, political science), preferably with a focus on sustainability within the food domain.
  • You have a great interest in the transformation of the food system; environmental sustainability and healthy living.
  • You have strong empirical research skills, in particular with qualitative research.
  • You have a demonstrable affinity with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research
  • You are a team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with different types of stakeholders.
  • You are able to work creatively, flexibly and independently.
