Postdoc on legal aspects of an interoperable offshore electricity grid

This project is Part of Horizon Europe-funded project InterOPERA. Europe wants to build around 450 GW of offshore wind by 2050. In the future, the cables to connect offshore wind farms will not only transmit electricity directly to shore. They will also serve as interconnectors between countries and transmit electricity between different wind farms. Large, cross-border high voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity systems are needed for this. These systems must be interoperable and mutually compatible. The €69 million project “InterOPERA” will define the future interoperability standards of the multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids in offshore electricity. The project unites more than 20 European partners to cover both the technical and economic challenges as well as the legal and regulatory challenges. The University of Groningen’s main contribution in the project lies with the legal and regulatory framework.

Within the project, a major task is the development of a multi-vendor cooperation framework. This cooperation framework should have a legal basis, which is to be developed in the project, supported by us. The cooperation framework has links to energy law, competition law (cooperation between competitors) as well as intellectual property law (to protect the technology and software developed by the different actors).

The Position
Your role in the project is to contribute to the development of the cooperation framework with your specific legal expertise and independent analysis. You are expected to take an active and independent role in the work of the project and contribute to the relevant project meetings. Moreover, you are expected to contribute to the dissemination and valorisation of this research, by (co)authoring publications on the outcomes, active contribution in conferences and stakeholder dissemination events, as well as by activities that increase the societal impact of the research done in this project.

This is a 0,8 FTE position with a duration of 3,5 years.

Organisation

Professor of Contemporary Performing Arts (Theatre/Music/Dance)

Since its foundation in 1614, the University of Groningen has established an international reputation as a dynamic and innovative university offering high quality teaching and research. Its 37,000 students are encouraged to develop their individual talents through challenging study and career paths. The University of Groningen is an international centre of knowledge: it belongs to the best research universities in Europe, and is allied with prestigious partner universities and networks worldwide. For additional information, see this link: https://www.rug.nl/(...)k-with-us/new-staff/. The University of Groningen has a strong commitment to the principles and practices of diversity and inclusion throughout the University community and welcomes candidates who enhance that diversity.

Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts is building on a longstanding tradition of four centuries. Its mission is to be an ambitious top-ranking faculty in terms of both education and high-quality research, with a strong international orientation, firmly rooted in the North of the Netherlands. The faculty creates and shares knowledge through outstanding education and high-quality research, benefitting society.

Arts, Culture and Media
The ACM program is unique in the Netherlands with its doubly interdisciplinary structure: it combines a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives with a broad range of art disciplines where students choose two art forms in their BA studies from music, theatre, film, literature or the visual arts. This rich interdisciplinary and inter-art setting calls for a scholar with openness to interdisciplinarity. Some of the overarching questions studied by the ACM staff are: How do we define the arts and what are their functions? Which roles do the arts play in the lives of individuals, for specific social groups and within society as a whole? How do related media impact the experiences and evaluation of the arts, and how do contemporary and newly emerging art forms relate to each other and the evolution and history of the arts? How have developments such as intermedial art, participatory art, digital art, performance art, sound art, or new media art transformed the arts in recent years? How do these new and emerging forms of arts deal with questions of climate disaster, post-colonialism, gender inequality? Related to this broad range of questions the new chair should also show commitment to thinking about historical changes in discussions about the arts and share a strong commitment to studying how the arts contribute to societal values and individual worldviews.

The Faculty of Arts in the University of Groningen invites applications for the position of Full Professor of Contemporary Performing Arts (Theatre/Music/Dance). This is a full-time and permanent post.

The successful candidate has an excellent, proven track record in the field of Contemporary Performing Arts, both in research and teaching, and has excellent leadership and mentorship qualities. The new professor comes with a rich and varied experience of working in multidisciplinary teams and is able to work in different fields. The chair holder is expected to lead a dynamic team of researchers with varied research interests and disciplinary backgrounds, and to promote and serve the long-term interests of the team and its members within the Faculty of Arts and beyond.

Research
The research task of the professor covers 40% of the appointment. Research in the field of Arts, Culture and Media (ACM) is housed in the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) and, within this, in the Research Center for Arts in Society with theme groups such as ‘Music, Sound and Culture,’ ‘Film and Contemporary Audiovisual Media,’ and ‘Arts, Culture and Cognition.’ Furthermore, members of the Department of Arts, Culture and Media participate in various national research schools, such as the Research School for Media Studies (RMeS) or the Netherlands Institute of Cultural Analysis (NICA). The new chair will actively contribute to at least one of them. The new professor is expected to secure funding for research projects through research proposals in cooperation with academic or non-academic institutions within and outside the Netherlands. The candidate should therefore have experience in setting up national and international research programmes and obtaining funding. An extensive national and international network is essential.
The new chair will also actively seek PhDs students and explore new ways for joint or double degrees.

Teaching
Teaching covers 60% of the appointment (minus compensated management tasks), and the candidate is expected to teach and lead development of courses at all levels in the department. The ACM department provides education at the Bachelor level in the form of the international BA Arts, Culture and Media, the four minors and pre-master programmes, four MA tracks and two Research Master tracks. The new chair will be teaching in the BA program and in one or more of the four MA tracks in ‘Arts & Culture’: ‘Music, Theatre and Performance Studies’, ‘Arts, Cognition and Criticism’, ‘Arts, Policy and Cultural Entrepreneurship’, and ‘Film and Contemporary Audiovisual Media’, as well as the Research MA ‘Arts & Culture’ with its two tracks ‘Arts, Media and Literary Studies’ and ‘Cultural Leadership.’ Which courses the candidate will be teaching will depend on the profile of the candidate and needs of the program.

Management
The new professor leads the chair group Contemporary Performing Arts (Theatre/Music/Dance) and performs service and administrative tasks within and outside the Faculty of Arts. The new chair holder will play an active role in promoting the regional, national and international prestige of the chair group by initiating and contributing to existing societal and networking activities and will represent the chair group through their contacts with academic institutions and societal partners in the Netherlands and abroad.

The position
We seek a candidate with an international reputation as a research leader and a clearly demonstrated record of accomplished teaching and administration.

The professor will:

● coordinate and teach courses in the BA and MA programmes
● instigate, coordinate, and conduct research in the field of Contemporary Performing Arts
● supervise and co-supervise PhD students
● foster the professional development of the members of the chair group
● obtain external funding for research
● deepen and extend existing teaching and research collaborations across the university
● develop existing national and international scholarly networks
● fulfil organizational roles within and possibly outside of the faculty
● represent and promote the chair group of Contemporary Performing Arts in fostering and expanding national and international contacts.

Qualifications

● a PhD degree in the field of Contemporary Performing Arts or a closely related field

Residence in The Netherlands, in or near Groningen, is a requirement for this post.

● promote the societal relevance of your research
● teach in, and contribute to the development of the Bachelor and Master programs of (applied) physics
● contribute to the organization of the faculty, for example by participating in working groups and committees, in the domains of teaching, research and management.

At the stage of Assistant Professor 60% of your time is for research, 30% for teaching activities and 10% for organizational tasks.

Qualifications

We encourage you to apply if you have:

● a PhD degree in experimental particle physics
● at least two years of postdoctoral experience outside of the Netherlands, preferably in a different country than where you received your PhD, and a relevant international network
● strong research profile, as shown by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and recognition in the scientific community (invited talks at conferences, collaborations, etc.)
● a good track record in teaching, appropriate to your career stage
● demonstrable organizational competences
● intercultural sensitivity
● good command of spoken and written English.

And you are:

● team minded with good communication skills
● willing to join the LHCb Collaboration
● able to acquire substantial research grants from external sources
● willing to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) within three years
● able to speak the Dutch language or motivated to speak it within five years (B1 level).

Organisation

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities a full-time position as Assistant Professor in our faculty’s tenure track system Career Paths in Science and:

● a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, from € 3,974 (salary scale 11) up to a maximum of € 6,181 gross per month (salary scale 12, depending on your career stage) for a full-time position
● holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus of respectively 8% and 8.3% of your yearly salary
● a pension scheme
● maternity and parental leave
● the possibility to work part-time (0.9 or 0.8 FTE)
● a mentor program and a broad range of opportunities for personal development
● dual career support for partners of new faculty members moving to Groningen.

Consider our website for more information about the working conditions at the University of Groningen: https://www.rug.nl/(...)with-us/that-is-why/

As Assistant Professor you will enter a tenure track that, if followed successfully, will lead to a Full Professorship in approximately 10 years. In case of a full-time contract, you will initially be appointed for 7 years and your performance will be assessed after 5 years. This moment may be extended with at most one year in case of a life event (e.g. prolonged illness or maternity leave). If your assessment is positive, you will get a tenured appointment as an Associate Professor. After another 4 to 7 years you will be assessed for promotion to the position of Full Professor. Please consider Career Paths in Science for a complete description of our tenure track system as well as the criteria for promotion: https://www.rug.nl/(...)ce-edition-4?lang=en

Application

We invite you to submit a complete application including:

Our ambition is for your doctoral studies to be stimulating and purposeful throughout the programme until you have obtained your doctoral degree. A thorough introduction will therefore get you off to a good start and provide a solid foundation on which you can build your studies. As a doctoral student at Örebro University, you will be offered a specially tailored seminar series, covering matters ranging from doctoral programme rules and careers to support during the study period and networking.

The place on the programme is linked to a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the study programme, which corresponds to four years of full-time study. More information on doctoral studentships, part-time studies and part-time doctoral studentships can be found in the Regulations Handbook. Applicants meet the general entry requirements for research studies if they:

Special qualifications also apply to those who have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

The selection of eligible applicants is based on their ability to absorb postgraduate education and is carried out in accordance with the university's selection criteria (see annex 2 to the general syllabus for psychology). The position is appointed to the applicant with the highest ranking.

Own research experience in one of psychology's subfields is advantageous, especially if the research was conducted in areas relevant to one of the three research topics (see Project description).
