PhD Scholarship in Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence

 The Department of Communication in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship starting on 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The 3-year position is funded by the Carlsberg Semper Ardens Advance https://www.carlsbergfondet.dk/da/Forskningsaktiviteter/Bevillingsstatistik/Bevillingsoversigt/CF22_1432_Anders-Soegaard. Artificial Intelligence has made its way into our everyday life and into the sciences. With that comes great responsibility. The Center for Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence revisits the foundations of responsible Artificial Intelligence and asks deep questions about the philosophical significance of recent breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence. The phD student is expected to work on questions relating to philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, including, but not limited to:

  • fairness
  • transparency and interpretability
  • trustworthiness
  • accountability
  • moral testimony
  • privacy
  • discussions around strong artificial intelligence
  • consciousness
  • superintelligence

Introduction
PhD studies consist of research programmes that qualify students for independent and wide-ranging research, development and teaching at international level. The main emphasis is on PhD students organising and conducting their own research project (under supervision). The programme culminates in the submission of a PhD thesis, which the student must defend in public. The programme is prescribed to 180 ECTS points, corresponding to three years of full-time study.

A PhD opens up a range of career opportunities in academia and elsewhere. As well as writing a thesis, PhD students work in active research environments in Denmark and abroad. They contribute to the academic environment, take research training courses and convey the results of their research in teaching, at academic conferences and to the general public.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have a 2-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent and, as a minimum, have submitted a Master’s thesis for which they have received pre-approval at the time of application.

Applicants with a degree from a university where the working language is not English or one of the Scandinavian languages must submit a translation of their Master’s diploma and/or diploma transcripts approved by the Danish embassy or consulate in the country where the original document was issued. 5. Project description

Applications must include a detailed project description covering the problem formulation, overall objectives, methodology, design and timetable (max. five pages/12,000 characters, incl. spaces, excl. bibliography).

Applicants who anticipate incurring extraordinary expenses (related to questionnaires, fieldwork, extended stay(s) abroad, equipment, etc.) must include brief comments about this in their project description.

Assessment criteria
The following criteria are applied when assessing PhD applications:

  • The quality, originality and feasibility of the PhD project
  • Research qualifications, as reflected in the attached CV and project description
  • Competencies and knowledge of relevant fields of academic research
  • Level (grades obtained) of Bachelor and Master’s studies.

Please note that only a few scholarships are awarded at each call for applications and competition is intense.

The recruitment process 
After the deadline for applications, the Head of Department considers advice from the Appointment Committee and then selects applicants for assessment. All applicants will be notified whether or not they have been shortlisted. After this, the Head of Department sets up an expert Assessment Committee to assess the shortlisted applications. The selected applicants will be informed who is serving on the committee. Individual applicants will be offered the opportunity to comment on the committee’s assessment of their application before the appointment is announced.

Department of Accounting and Auditing
The department of Accounting and Auditing is a medium-sized group of around 60 academics coming from a variety of countries and disciplines. The department brings together academics and practitioners active in the field of accounting, auditing, and control. We are active in areas like auditing, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, financial accounting and reporting, management accounting and control, tax, and corporate law.

We teach accounting, auditing, and control in several bachelor programs as well as in the master programs in Accountancy and Controlling and in Business Administration. We also have a strong footing in executive master programs, like the Executive Master in Accountancy and the Executive Master of Finance and Control. Job description
The new Assistant Professor is expected to strengthen the position of the Department of Accounting and Auditing and the theme of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence. We are looking for candidates with an interest in (interdisciplinary) research related to digitalization and artificial intelligence in the broadest sense, such as the role of the chief digital officer, knowledge and expertise on digitalization and digital innovations in TMTs and the board of directors, IT Governance, the role of artificial intelligence or data analytics in accounting and/or auditing, the role of human-technology interaction in accounting and/or auditing, and the like.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary depending on qualifications and work experience, starting from a minimum of € 3,974 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 6,181 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position
• a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual income and an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance, as well as participation in a solid state pension scheme. Non-Dutch applicants may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. A full-time position entitles you to 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment.

Career track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are permanent positions subject to a tenure decision after 18 months. The vacancy comprises a full-time position at the level of Assistant Professor, but an 0.8 or 0.9 FTE appointment is possible as well, based on the preferences of the candidate.

Job description

The Advanced Production Engineering group has a vacancy for a technician who will support in experimental research activities in materials engineering and technology.

As a materials technology lab technician you will be responsible for the daily operational, maintenance and safety aspects in Materials Processing, Analytical and Microscopic Characterization labs. You will support researchers and students in the setup and execution of experiments. The successful candidate for this position must have a broad background in materials processing technology, failure analysis, the characterization of materials, and knowledge in the operation and troubleshooting of materials engineering laboratory apparatus and electronics.

Primary job responsibilities:

• manage all laboratory assets, ensuring all equipment is maintained, calibrated and serviced on time
• install and maintain software on lab computers and solve issues with lab equipment
• operate and train new students (bachelor and master) to use lab apparatus
• manage, develop, review and ensure conformance to all laboratory risk assessments and best practices
• responsible for purchasing lab consumables, ensuring the inventory is always stocked and that everything is clearly and correctly labelled
• test competence should include the following aspects:

1) laser material processing techniques, physical vapor deposition
2) polymer 3D printing and polymer sensor fabrication
3) mechanical testing - bending, tension, compression, hardness, adhesion tests.
4) sample preparation including grinding, polishing and etching a variety of materials.

Qualifications

You have at least a Bachelor degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and hands-on expertise in the field of materials processing and laboratory facility. You are highly motivated, of good problem solving ability, fluent in English and Dutch, and cross-cultural sensitivity and strong communication skills.

Post-doc Machine Learning and Modelling of Perovskite Solar Cells

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team working on the development of high-efficiency wide-bandgap perovskite for application in perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment with leading European academic and industrial partners, including the universities of Oxford and Valencia, on a large-scale European project.

The focus of the postdoc project will be on using advanced numerical simulation modeling software and machine learning techniques to quantitatively study the electrical characteristics of state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells. Specifically, the successful candidate will identify the loss mechanisms of the perovskite solar cells made and measured by the other partners through the use of extensive numerical modeling. This will involve extending our current drift-diffusion modeling software, applying it to experimental data, and using machine learning to identify trends in the data.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field. A deep understanding of device physics, numerical modeling, and computer programming is required. Experience in machine learning and data analysis is highly desirable but not essential.

The postdoc will be based at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, one of the leading institutes in the field of materials science, and will be supervised by Prof. Jan Anton Koster, an expert in the field of photovoltaics.

• technical skills: A PhD degree in physics, material science or engineering (or equivalent) is required. A demonstrable background in computer programming, machine learning and/or numerical simulation is essential.

The candidate is encouraged to use creative experimental concepts to understand, master, design, and engineer for instance genetic circuits and/or biosynthetic pathways. We envisage that your research will provide fundamental understanding of the molecular processes of microbial life and will lead to the use of (engineered) microorganisms for biotechnological or biomedical purposes. As full professor you will become head of the GBB research group Molecular Genetics and bring in expertise that complements current research at GBB (e.g. Arnold Driessen, Matthias Heinemann, Marco Fraaije, Ida van der Klei, Sahar El Aidy, Danny Incarnato), the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (e.g. Marc van der Maarel, Gert-Jan Euverink) and the Groningen Research Institute for Pharmacy (e.g. Gerrit Poelarends, Dr. Sandy Schmidt).

As Full Professor you will:

• establish a viable and internationally leading research line and research group
• supervise PhD students
• acquire external funding
• promote the societal relevance of your research
• teach in and contribute to the development of the BSc and MSc degree programs in biology, chemistry, life sciences and technology and biomolecular sciences
• contribute to the organization of the faculty, for example by participating in working groups and committees, in the domains of teaching, research and management
• spend 40% of your time for research, 40% for teaching activities and 20% for organizational and managerial tasks.

The position we offer will be embedded in the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB). GBB provides an excellent environment for ground-breaking research and comprises thirteen creative research units in biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, molecular and cell biology, computational and systems biology, genetics, and microbiology. Research in GBB is organized in two focal areas: ‘Molecular Mechanisms of Biological Processes’ and ‘Physiology and Systems Biology’.

We are looking for a tenure track Assistant to Associate Professor with outstanding knowledge of and experience in microbial biotechnology and who aims to develop and implement novel approaches to discover, screen and engineer unexplored natural compounds, which have great potential for specific applications. For instance, combinatorial methods can be used to (re)design natural products to also aid natural product diversification and effectiveness and eventually improved production. The newly appointed staff member will be able to connect to ongoing studies in molecular microbiology (Profs. Arnold Driessen, Dirk-Jan Scheffers, and Tessa Quax), microbiomes (Prof. Sahar El Aidy, Dr Frans Bianchi), molecular systems biology (Profs. Matthias Heineman, Andreas Milias), molecular enzymology and biotechnology (Prof. Marco Fraaije and Dr Max Fürst), chemical biology (Profs. Giovanni Maglia), and synthetic biology (Dr Sonja Billerbeck). Furthermore, the work connects to structural-function research (Profs. Siewert-Jan Marrink, Albert Guskov, Dirk Slotboom, Bert Poolman and Dr. Tych) as well as research activities at the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry (e.g. Prof. Adri Minnaard), the Groningen Research Institute for Pharmacy (GRIP; e.g. Prof. Gerrit Poelarends, Dr Sandy Schmidt), the Groningen Ecology and Evolutionary Life Sciences Institute (Prof. Joana Falcao Salles, Dr Marjon de Vos), and the Engineering and Technology institute Groningen (ENTEG; Prof. Gert-Jan Euverink).
