Assistant professor in European Law

 

We are looking for a highly motivated and flexible assistant professor to teach and conduct research in the field of European law. The successful applicant is committed to innovative teaching and original research, with an identifiable critical perspective.

What are you going to do

You will join a vibrant research community and successful educational programmes. The assistant professor will form part of the department of international and European public law and the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG). ACELG has a strong track-record of excellent research and sustains a dynamic research culture through a series of events and initiatives. ACELG participates among other things in the project SGEL that connects European law with public international law and private law.

The faculty’s relevant graduate and postgraduate programmes draw a diverse, interesting and interested student population from the Netherlands and abroad. The section European Law teaches a first-year Bachelor course in European Law, the minor Law and Justice in the European Union, and executes the Master tracks European Union Law and European Competition Law and Regulation.

You will:

• teach and coordinate courses in the field of European law, subject to further agreement and the competences of the selected candidate;
• contribute in cooperation with colleagues to the continuous development in educational methods and content of the European law Master’s programmes;
• supervise master theses at graduate and possibly undergraduate level, and eventually assist in the supervision of PhD students;
• carry out and publish independent and high-quality research that fits within the research at the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG) – beyond this, participation in ‘Sustainable Global Economic Law’ (SGEL), ACELG’s joined research project with the Amsterdam Center for International law and the Amsterdam Centre for Transformative Law is an option;
• actively contribute to the research community of the Faculty, in particular of ACELG;
• apply for external research grants at funding organizations such as the NWO and ERC;
• perform administrative and organizational tasks for the department and/or ACELG (eg participation in programme committee, examination board, etc.);
• work as part of a team.

What do we require

Regarding your experience and profile, the following criteria will be taken into account:

• a PhD in European law;
• proven, high-quality research output in a substantive field of European law (and/or a closely related field/discipline) in international journals and/or books;
• excellent didactic qualities as evidenced by educational evaluations, where available;
• the interest and flexibility to teach in both Master tracks, European Union Law and European Competition Law and Regulation;
• an excellent command of English, both verbal and written; knowledge of Dutch will be considered a clear advantage;
• strong scientific writing, planning and communication skills;
• a strong motivation both to teach and to do research;
• qualifies for additional research time under the standard of the research priority area (criteria can be requested by email);
• the basic qualification at Dutch universities in higher education (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs: BKO) certificate or a willingness to acquire such.

Our offer

The appointment will be for the period of 3 years, with a possibility for permanency depending on performance and funds. The starting date of the appointment is August 2021 at the latest.

The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for Assistant Professors at Dutch universities, scale 11 (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) ranging from €3,746 to €5,127 gross per month (full-time equivalent of 38 hours per week). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year Bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.
