PhD position - Use of Hardware Solutions for Modern Energy System Simulation and Control

At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) we focus on the development of models and algorithms for simulation and optimization of decentralized, integrated energy systems. Such systems are characterized by high spatial and temporal variability of energy supply and demand as well as by a high degree of interdependency of material and energy flows. Our research at the IEK-10 aims to provide scalable and faster than real-time capable methods and tools which enable the energy-optimal, cost-efficient and safe design and operation of future energy systems.

We are offering a

PhD position - Use of Hardware Solutions for Modern Energy System Simulation and Control

Your Job:

  • Analysis of the current state of the art in the simulation and control of energy systems with the aid of specialized computer hardware (e.g. based on FPGAs)
  • Definition of innovative methods for the simulation and control of multi-modal energy systems based on application-specific instruction-set processors
  • Development of test cases and scenarios for the evaluation of implemented methods
  • Validation of the approaches with benchmarks and real-world energy system models (data is, for instance, available from research projects such as Living Lab Energy Campus)
  • Evaluation of defined methods` performance using last generation computer hardware and Hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) approaches

Your Profile:

  • M.Sc. in Computer / Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a comparable course of studies
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one of the following subject areas: logic synthesis (preferably application-specific instruction-set processors), hardware description, or computer network technologies as well as link layer protocols (preferably Aurora)
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in programming in at least two of the following languages: C, Assembler, SystemC, VHDL, Verlog, a high level synthesis (HLS) language
  • Excellent ability for cooperative collaboration
  • Very good communication skills in English
  • Preferably knowledge in implementing electrical circuits and measuring setups or in modeling and simulation of energy systems
