Scientific Programmer and Computer Lab Coordinator

 

The Parallel Computing Systems (PCS) group at the Informatics Institute (IvI) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for Scientific Programmer and Computer Lab Coordinator. The PCS group performs research on the design, programming and run-time management of multi-core and multi-processor computer systems. The modeling, analysis and optimization of the extra-functional aspects of these systems, such as performance, power/energy consumption but also the degree of productivity to design and program these systems, play a pivotal role in our work.

What are you going to do?

You will be playing an important double role within the PCS group. For about half of your time, you will be acting as a scientific programmer, helping our researchers with developing their software. This will be done in the context of the NWO-funded DSE 2.0 project, which is a collaboration with Leiden University and ASML. The DSE 2.0 project aims at developing innovative modeling, simulation and optimization techniques and software tools to help designers of complex distributed computing infrastructures embedded in industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (like ASML’s lithography machines) in the design process of the next generation of their products.

For the other half of your time, you will be assisting our lecturers by coordinating the computer labs of their courses. This will be done in continuous consultation with the lecturers who are responsible for the theoretical and didactic implementation of a course. The focus will be on courses within the MSc Software Engineering program, but may also be extended to courses from the MSc Computer Science and BSc Informatica. Your duties in this context would be: developing, preparing and adapting course material for project and practical groups, coaching and instructing teachings assistants, supervision on project and practical groups, providing feedback on (weekly) assignments, etc.

What do we require?

• Master’s degree Computer Science (or a closely related discipline);
• proven software engineering and programming skills;
• good analytical, didactical and organisational skills;
• fluency in oral and written English;
• ability to work in an international (research) team.

Preferably you have some prior expertise in one or more of the following fields: computer systems architecture, modeling and simulation, performance analysis, and system optimization.

Our offer

We offer a temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 12 months, preferably starting as soon as possible. After positive evaluation, the contract will be extended with a period of three years. The job profile Education/Research Officer is applicable.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €2,656 to €4,012 (scale 8-9) gross per month, based on fulltime employement (38 hours a week). In addition there is a 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
