Doctoral candidate position in Durable Thin-Ply Thermoplastic Polymer Composites for Shape Adaptable Structures

The Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures (CMASLab) at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering is looking for a Doctoral candidate in the field of Durable Thin-Ply Thermoplastic Polymer Composites for Shape Adaptable Structures as soon as possible.

Project background

CMASLab has a very competent, international and interdisciplinary research team. Our research activity focuses on processing and mechanical performance of composite materials and their applications in adaptive and smart structures. This project will focus on effects of processing on the durability of thin-ply thermoplastic fiber reinforced materials, targeting in hi-end applications such as flexible wings, smart planetary rovers, biomedical devices and wearables. Previous research activity has shown promising results in terms of performance of non-commercially available CF-PEEK reinforced composites of very low ply thickness. The preliminary results have shown that these material configurations may show improved mechanical performance and strong potential for applications with high damage tolerance demands. Yet, the final performance is highly affected by the processing conditions. This project is part of a broader collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space GmbH.

Job description

The research related to this doctorate position will deal with experimental features, in other words processing aspects and mechanical characterization, mechanical and damage modeling activity, as well as structural design. For the experimental activity, standardized methods may be implemented while novel, tailored and focused experimental campaigns that will be developed in the course of this project are not excluded. The mechanical modeling will involve, but not be restricted at computational FE-based stress analysis and damage mechanics. The final target of this project is to create optimized materials architectures and microstructures and evaluate their potential in selected high-end applications.

Your profile

We are looking for an outstanding candidate with a degree (Master’s or equivalent) in engineering sciences (mechanical, materials, aerospace) or an equivalent related field. Applicants should have experience with experimental techniques for durability analysis and computational mechanics, as well as a strong interest in polymer and composite mechanics. We are looking for highly motivated candidates, passionate for science and research, with strong team spirit.
