We are seeking a highly motivated PhD Student to join our research group (project titled “The role of the gut barrier and microbiome in autoimmune diseases.”) The position is available at the earliest possible opportunity, and is currently funded for three years.

This project will deal with how autoimmunity arises in the context of abnormal intestinal permeability, translocating gut bacteria and their effect on the innate and adaptive immune system, particularly pattern recognition receptors including toll-like receptors.

The PhD project will involve the use of a wide range of experimental techniques including microbiological (strain isolation and identification, genetic manipulation), molecular biological / immunological (Western blot, RT-PCR, FACS, ELISA), microscopic and histological approaches (tissue histology, immunocyto- and immunohistochemistry), human blood and tissue cultures, and research using various mouse models that are prone to autoimmune diseases and whose microbiomes are manipulated.

We are seeking an ambitious, highly qualified and motivated student with a strong interest in biomedical research, who should be committed to the advancement of the project and aiming towards developing an academic career. We expect the successful candidate to hold a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry or life sciences and to demonstrate prior knowledge and experience of the aforementioned techniques. The ability to both work independently and to contribute effectively to group projects, as well as an excellent command of IT and of the English language are part of the basic prerequisites.

Attending weekly seminars, lectures and project meetings as well as the possibility to participate in national and international conferences and workshops form part of our PhD programme.
