6 Postdoc Positions "Biodiversity of Anthropocene Oceans: Networks, Flows and Systems Approaches for Boundary Crossing Research"

The Helmholtz-Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) is a new institute on interdisciplinary marine biodiversity research, established on the campus of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. It joins the scientific profiles of Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) Oldenburg and the Alfred Wegener Institute – Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven (AWI). The university is also home to a vibrant Institute for Social Science. In order to advance early career development and to bring in novel perspectives into the institute, HIFMB has created an independent postdoc pool, HIPP, that offers postdoctoral scientists the opportunity to develop their own research ideas and to actively shape their scientific careers. For each call, we set a topical context in order to foster collaborations between postdocs. For this call, we invite postdoc projects under the theme of Biodiversity of Anthropocene Oceans: Networks, Flows and Systems Approaches for Boundary Crossing Research.

Overview
The Anthropocene centres the role of humans in creating, but also responding to, the current state of planetary precarity. There is currently a proliferation of policies, governance mechanisms and management tools aimed at oceanic protection and yet, as international organizations note, the oceans remain in ‘deep crisis’ (UN, 2020). Research is thus needed that crosses boundaries in examining environmental problems, transcending the borders of typical disciplinary approaches by asking fresh questions, drawing on novel methods, innovative tools of analysis, and expanding critical theories (UN Ocean Decade, 2020). This call for postdoctoral positions encourages proposals situated within and across areas of our institutional expertise: biodiversity change, ecosystem functions and conservation and management to understand our anthropocene oceans. Central to the call is research that employs networks, flows and systems as concepts (and realities) that allow for linkages between environmental problems and society to be explored.

Projects might include: understanding complex marine systems for effective management; exploring flows of information for better science communication; evaluating (actor)network frameworks for grasping biodiversity change and societal resilience; grasping how species under need of management, move or disperse, or projects that encompass cross-boundary areas such as urban oceans, estuary zones, and waste streams, or cross-boundary topics such as shifting baselines, marine environmental target formation, bioinvasion or ocean acoustics. This list is not exhaustive.

Accordingly, we welcome applicants from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and particularly welcome interdisciplinary projects that cross and transcend the natural and social sciences – governance, ecology, management, biodiversity theory, conservation, data science. Projects that embrace creative methods and modes of stakeholder engagement are encouraged as much as those engaging lab experiments, analysis of field data, interrogation of big data, alongside those that innovatively combine approaches.

These positions contribute to the mission of HIFMB and the Helmholtz program POF IV, by understanding the functional role of biodiversity in marine systems and its consequences for societies.

Requirements
Formal requirements are an excellent PhD (finalized latest at Dec 31, 2021) in marine sciences (natural, social or interdisciplinary) or related fields, and an encouraging scientific track record commensurate to career stage (in publications, conference contributions, prices, etc.).

Further Information
For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Kimberley Peters (kimberley.peters@hifmb.de; +49(471) 4831- 2546) or Ruth Krause (ruth.krause@hifmb.de; +49(471) 4831- 2543).

The positions are limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Oldenburg.

Postdocs have to register with AWI's postdoc office PROCEED, thereby gaining access to a set of tailor-made career development tools.

We offer
  • An interdisciplinary research environment with expertise in experimental and field oriented marine ecology, data science, modelling, marine governance and political ecology.
  • Career development support through transdisciplinary workshops, seminars and mentoring at the Graduate Academy of Oldenburg University and AWI’s postdoc office PROCEED.
  • A lively international atmosphere and family-friendly environment.

Equal opportunities are an integral part of our personnel policy. The AWI aims to increase the number of female employees and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply.

Disabled applicants will be given preference when equal qualifications are present.

The AWI fosters the compatibility of work and family in various ways and has received a number of awards as a result of this engagement.

We look forward to your application!
Please forward your application by June 30th 2021, exclusively online.

Applications should include a motivation letter (maximum 3 pages) and your academic CV with a list of the most important publications (please use attached template). In your motivation letter, you should  explain your suitability for a postdoc position under the given theme and set out an overview of how you would pursue research under this call. This should include the background/existing knowledge in your field, the research question(s) you envisage and methods related to your particular topic.

Please also describe how your research topic is linked to the HIFMB research areas and HIFMB’s scientific mission and how the questions may contribute to achieving the objectives of Helmholtz research program POF IV, esp. chapter 6.1). Please also describe if you intend to connect your research to external researchers outside HIFMB/ AWI and UOL.
