A position as Associate Professor is available at the Center of Excellence QuSpin (Center for Quantum Spintronics) which is part of the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The research area of the vacant position is experimental study of electronic structure using angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The position will be hired as a permanent Associate Professor position, with possibilities for applying for promotion to full professor level.
The candidate will join and an excellent international research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.
About QuSpin
QuSpin carries out research in theoretical as well as experimental condensed matter physics. QuSpin’s principal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric and spin signals, conceptually different from those existing today. A central aspect of QuSpin is to foster fruitful collaborations between theorists and experimentalists working within the Center.

QuSpin currently has 9 professors/associate professors, 2 researchers, 27 PhD students and 7 postdoctoral researchers from 13 different nations working on various aspects of low-dissipation spintronics.
Duties of the position
The candidate will develop an independent and innovative research program within the area of experimental studies of many-body effects in electronic structure using angularly resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), including spin-resolved ARPES. The Center has recently completed the purchase of and installation of excellent inhouse facilities for such studies.
The candidate will:
Perform research that fits within the vision of the QuSpin Center of Excellence.
Initiate a vigorous research program with international visibility in the domain of electronic structure using angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy, preferably (but not limited to) spin-resolved studies.
Carry out research of excellent quality resulting in publications in international peer review journals in the field mentioned above.
Secure fundamental-, strategic-, and applied projects at the national and European/international level.
Be responsible for teaching, supervision of students within physics and together with other faculty members. Both specialized courses at master level and general courses in physics at bachelor level.
Be expected to supervise master students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in your discipline.
Collaborate with other academic staff to administrate, manage and develop the Department and initiate individual and collaborative research, teaching and outreach activities.
Required selection criteria
The position of Associate Professor within condensed matter physics requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.
A PhD in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Research activity, output and plans must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to initiate research in the field of electronic structure measurements of condensed matter systems using ARPES .
There must be a strategic match of your research plans with QuSpin, with emphasis on studying many-body physics within the scope of QuSpin.
Experience and background that ensures solid governance the development of a smooth day-to-day operation of an advanced ARPES / surface science instrument suite.
Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

A proven track record of working with spatially resolved and spin-resolved ARPES instruments and data.
A proven track record of attracting external funding.
An international network in academic research relevant to the department and the position.
Experience with independent teaching and supervision from at least one academic institution.

Fluency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

Salary and conditions
In a position as Associate Professor comes with a starting package for new research staff, opportunities for mentoring and is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension
Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates.
