Postdoctoral Position in Data Exchange Infrastructure

 


The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Amsterdam Internet Exchange are collaborating with a number of partners and initiatives to produce a generic infrastructure for the exchange of data: the Amsterdam Data Exchange (AMDEX). The AMDEX facilitates the bringing together of data and data analysis algorithms in ways that ensure societal regulations and sharing agreements are respected, thus delivering sovereignty to data providers and the preservation of the rights of data subject (when applicable). The infrastructure is leveraged by marketplaces in which data providers and algorithm providers find each other and establish sharing agreements as part of commercial transactions. Building on data exchange archetypes and policy templates, the sharing agreements are translated into concrete applications executed on the AMDEX infrastructure. The AMDEX infrastructure is neutral with respect to the marketplaces, enabling marketplaces to provide the specific services that benefit their users.

Within the AMDEX FieldLab project, the University of Amsterdam is creating a generic, scalable reference model by combining abstractions identified from successful data sharing efforts within earlier (partner) initiatives, scientific literature, community/commercial efforts and case studies. The primary case studies are provided by partner SURF and are in the domain of research data exchange (RDX). A central component of the reference model is its ability to ensure norm-compliance at all stages of the data sharing process, with norms extracted from a variety of sources, including regulations, organisational policies and agreements/contracts.

What are you going to do?

Your role is to investigate the generalisability of the data sharing use cases within the AMDEX ecosystem. You will develop abstractions of established pillar solutions by working closely with our partners. These abstractions capture the invariants of a data sharing infrastructure configurable according to collaboration archetypes and the needs of service providers. In this role you will apply your skills on the topics of complex systems in general and software engineering in particular to participate in the design of a reference implementation for the AMDEX FieldLab project. You will perform cutting edge research on a crucial topic that directly impacts society.

What do we require?

  • a PhD degree in computer science, software engineering or a related discipline;
  • the ability to design modular and scalable software systems with reference implementations;
  • demonstrable experience with architecture design, distributed computing and/or cloud computing;
  • preferably knowledge of compiler technology;
  • the ability to critically analyze abstract models as well as concrete implementations;
  • the ability to (co-)supervise (PhD) students working on related topics;
  • enthusiasm for the research process: studying research papers, solving complex problems, applying creative thinking, evaluation, reflection and disseminating findings via writing and oral presentations;
  • fluency in written and spoken English.

Our offer

A temporary contract until 30 June 2023 for 38 hours a week, preferably starting as soon as possible.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €2,790 to €4,402 (scale 10) gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
