Postdoctoral position in Geomicrobiology

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a 2-year position in Geomicrobiology commencing 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Your job
The aim of this project is to investigate if minerals can serve as unrecognized hotspots for the observed and alarming distribution of antibiotic resistance genes. You will have a central role in the project and be expected to carry out experiments to investigate biofilm formation on a range of mineral surfaces and conduct horizontal gene transfer experiments. Additionally, you will be involved in investigating organic matrices from natural samples using FTIR, Raman, atomic force microscopy and fluorescent staining. For the uptake rate experiments we aim to use natural competent soil bacteria, but experience with gene modifications can be beneficial. It will be expected that you can work independently with microbiology.

Group and research
The group is an interdisciplinary mix of skills and backgrounds. The combined focus of our work is mineral surfaces and interactions with organic matrices in particular DNA, proteins and microbes. The geomicrobiology side of our work are focused on biofilm formation on mineral surfaces and how gene transfer can be facilitated by different mineral surfaces. We also apply atomic force microscopy and infra-red spectroscopy combined with bulk level approaches to quantify dynamics of biofilm/DNA/protein interactions with environmentally relevant minerals. Beside the PI, the group consist of 2 Post docs and 2 PhD students. Collaboration, diversity (in all aspects) and work-life balance are core values in the group. Group statement and more info on our research can be found here: www.kksand.com

Principal supervisor is Associate Professor Karina Krarup Sand, GLOBE Institute, kks@sund.ku.dkDirect Phone: +45 35 32 41 11

Profile
We are looking for an enthusiastic and independent scientist and expect them to have the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in geomicrobiology or a related field
  • You are highly experienced in fluorescent microscopy and staining techniques
  • You are experienced with atomic force microscopy, Raman and/or FTIR
  • You have an interest in soil/sediment systems
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken.

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience with horizontal gene transfer experiments
  • Knowledge of characterizing biofilm formation
  • Experience in communicating their science
  • Knowledge of soil and sediment components.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at GLOBE Institute, Section for GeoGenetics, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. The Sections research facilities include modern laboratories for gene extractions, sequencing and general wet chemistry. The group host a state-of-the-art atomic force microscope and access to fluorescent microscopes and microbiologic lab facilities.

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for 2 years. Starting date is 1 October or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
